Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for producing particle-reinforced metals according to the preamble of claim 1.
- nanoscale ceramic reinforcement particles are introduced into a molten aluminum alloy and distributed in the melt with a stirrer.
- agglomerates i.e. a cluster of particles is observed.
- the cause of the occurrence of particle agglomerates is, especially in the case of nanoparticles, the high interfacial forces that lead to the particles already being present as agglomerates before processing.
- the low energy that acts on the agglomerates due to the mixing processes in the melt is usually not sufficient to separate the agglomerates during the process.
- the poor wetting of the ceramic particles with the molten metal prevents the agglomerates from breaking open effectively.
- the increase in strength of castings by introducing nanoparticles has a very high potential for increasing the room temperature resistance, the high temperature resistance and creep resistance.
- the ductility is reduced far less by nanoparticles than by microparticles or reinforcing fibers.
- the aim should be to distribute the nanoparticles as homogeneously as possible in the metal matrix.
- the objective is to distribute nanoparticles with a particle size of a few nanometers so finely in the cast component that the ideal free passage distance for dislocations exists between the particles, which depends, among other things, on the respective alloy, but generally between 20 nm and is 200 nm.
- the reinforcement particles make it more difficult for migrations of dislocations in the metal which occur when external voltages are applied, and thus the resistance to plastic deformation of the component is increased. Too high a proportion of the reinforcement particles leads to a brittle material.
- the agglomerates For effective dispersion hardening in nanoparticle-reinforced composite materials produced by casting, the agglomerates must therefore be separated into their individual particles.
- a homogeneous distribution of the particles in the metal has a positive effect on the material properties.
- the ductility, the creep behavior and the wear properties are positively influenced by a homogeneous material structure.
- JP 8 325654 A For the production of particle-reinforced magnesium, a mixture of silicon dioxide and silicon carbide powder is added to the magnesium melt. Out JP 63 014828 A a fiber-reinforced aluminum composite material emerges.
- the object of the invention is therefore to achieve the most homogeneous possible distribution of nano- or microscale reinforcement particles in the molten metal.
- a mixture of the reinforcement particles and particles which are soluble in the molten metal is first produced. This mixture is then introduced into the molten metal. The soluble particles are dissolved in the molten metal, whereby the reinforcing particles are separated. In the case of an agglomerate of reinforcement particles and soluble particles in the mixture, the soluble particles form, as it were, placeholders, which disappear when they dissolve in the melt, as a result of which the isolated reinforcement particles remain.
- soluble particles dissolve, this can also be due to a chemical reaction.
- silicon dioxide particles can be used as soluble particles. The silicon dioxide can then react with the metal components of the alloy, for example to form metal oxides and metal silicides.
- the energy for separating the particles can also come from the chemical energy of reactions that take place in the molten metal.
- the reinforcement particles can also be produced in situ, for example from particles which are oxidized in the melt and thereby form reinforcement particles from a high-melting oxide.
- a mixture can also be introduced into the molten metal which consists of particles soluble in the molten metal and particles which form reinforcing particles in the molten metal.
- the isolated reinforcement particles are mechanically homogeneously distributed in the melt.
- a stirrer, an extruder or another mixing device can be used for this.
- the mechanical energy that must be applied to the melt to separate the agglomerates is low according to the invention.
- microscale particles that is, particles with an average particle size of 1 ⁇ m to 1,000 ⁇ m
- nanoscale particles that is, particles with an average particle size of 1 nm to 1 ⁇ m, preferably 100 nm to less than 1 are used both as reinforcement particles and as soluble particles ⁇ m.
- the average particle size of the soluble particles and the reinforcement particles is of the same order of magnitude.
- the ratio of the average particle size of the soluble particles to the average particle size of the reinforcing particles is between 10: 1 and 1:10. If the proportion of soluble particles is too small, the disintegration of the agglomerates into individual reinforcement particles is insufficient; if the proportion of soluble particles is too high, an undesirable change in the properties of the metal can occur. Mixing with a high proportion of soluble particles can facilitate the metering of small amounts of reinforcing particles.
- the volume fraction of the reinforcement particles in the metal is preferably 0.1% to 10%, in particular 1% to 10% for nanoscale reinforcement particles, 2% to 30%, in particular 5% to 20% for microscopic particles.
- the reinforcement particles are preferably insoluble in the melt.
- partially soluble reinforcing particles can also be used, but their solubility in the melt should not be more than 50% by volume.
- the reinforcement particles can therefore be inert in the molten metal. If they partially dissolve, it may be due to a chemical reaction at the interface. In this case, the kinetics of the reaction must be designed in such a way that possible reactions with the reinforcing particles proceed significantly more slowly than with the soluble particles.
- Ceramic particles are used in particular as reinforcing particles, for example carbides, such as silicon carbide (SiC). or metal oxides, such as aluminum oxide, and mixtures of these compounds.
- the soluble particles can consist of metals or ceramics. Silicon dioxide, for example, is suitable for magnesium alloys.
- Mixtures of particles which are soluble in the molten metal and reinforcing particles and / or particles which form reinforcing particles in the molten metal often arise as a by-product in other processing processes, for example in flame spraying. Mixtures of this type can be used particularly economically according to the invention. Flame spraying often produces a particle mixture of aluminum, aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide particles, which can be used according to the invention.
- the method according to the invention is particularly suitable for the production of particle-reinforced light metals, in particular for the production of cast components made of aluminum or magnesium alloys.
- Cast components of this type can be used as engine components, for example crankcases or engine support blocks, as chassis parts, but also, for example, as instrument panel supports.
- a melt of an MgAl6Sr2 alloy is mixed with a mixture of Al 2 O 3 particles and SiO 2 particles in a volume ratio of 1: 5, which is evenly distributed in the melt by stirring.
- the particle size of both particles is 20 nm to 50 nm.
- the amount of the mixture is 10% by weight, based on the melt.
