Description

The present invention relates to an improved smoking article wrapping material useful in smoking articles, e.g. Cigarettes that reduce carbon monoxide as a constituent of smoke ingredients without altering the air permeability of the tobacco wrapper paper in the unburned state.

It is known in the art that by increasing the air permeability of the tobacco wrapper paper or by altering the content of organic (eg cellulose) and inorganic substances (eg filler, preferably calcium carbonate) in the tobacco product wrapping material (cf. CA-A-2065788 ) or by reducing the mass of the tobacco product wrapping material (cf., for example WO-A-03/034846 ) or by using catalysts, a reduction of carbon monoxide (CO) can be achieved as part of the smoke ingredients.

The known inventions and applications are aimed directly or indirectly at a change in the air permeability of the tobacco product wrapping material, which reduces all smoke ingredients and changed the number of smoking products in only slightly changed proportions.

Frequently, however, these solutions only achieve a slight reduction in the carbon monoxide content or the ratio of the smoke constituents, in particular the ratio of CO and dry condensate, which is of interest due to legal regulation measures, is only insignificantly influenced.

Further, the CO reduction catalysts used in the prior art change the appearance of the tobacco wrapper papers or do not conform to legal regulations.

The aim of the present invention is thus to overcome the above-mentioned problems and to provide a tobacco product wrapping material, which allows a reduction of the carbon monoxide content of the smoke ingredients with unchanged air permeability.

Surprisingly, the inventors of the present invention have found that the above object is achieved by a smoking article wrapping material containing as filler two calcium carbonate different in particle size and amount.

The present invention therefore provides a tobacco product wrapping material containing as a filler calcium carbonates of different particle size, one of the calcium carbonates having a particle size of from 0.1 to 2 μm and an amount of from 51 to 99%, based on the total content of calcium carbonate fillers. and another calcium carbonate has a particle size of 3.5-10 microns and is contained in an amount of 1-49% based on the total content of calcium carbonate fillers.

In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the tobacco product wrapping material according to the invention is a cigarette paper.

In a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the total filler content of the tobacco product wrapping material according to the invention is 10 -50%, preferably 25 to 40%, based on the total weight of the tobacco product wrapping material.

The calcium carbonates used according to the invention are calcium carbonate having a particle size of from 0.1 to 2.0 μm, preferably from 0.3 to 1 μm, in an amount of from 51 to 99%, preferably from 70 to 95%, based on the Total amount of the fillers, as well as a second calcium carbonate having a particle size of 3.5-10 microns, preferably 4 to 6 microns, in an amount of 1-49%, preferably 5 -30%, based on the total amount of fillers , is included.

Furthermore, further fillers such as calcium carbonate of a different particle size, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide, talc or kaolin may optionally be added to the tobacco product wrapping material according to the invention.

The differentiation of the particle size of the calcium carbonate causes in the combustion process of the tobacco product wrapping material in combination with a manufactured therefrom smoking product, preferably cigarette, the formation of an outer ash tube, which shows a particularly porous structure.

The porous structure of the smoldering tobacco wrapper paper is essentially determined by the inventive combination of two different in particle size and amount of calcium carbonate and the total amount of calcium carbonate and only slightly by the level of air permeability of the tobacco product wrapping material.

Further, the tobacco product wrapping material of the present invention may optionally include a burning rate retarding substance and / or a burning rate accelerating substance.

According to the invention, disodium hydrogenphosphate can be mentioned as the burning rate retarding substance.

According to the invention, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts, such as sodium, potassium and magnesium salts, or carboxylic acid salts, such as acetic, citric, malic, lactic and tartaric salts, in particular citric acid salts, can be used as the burning rate accelerating substance.

The proportions of the respective constituents in the tobacco product wrapping material according to the invention, based in each case on the total weight of the tobacco product wrapping material, usually - if present - 0 - 6%, preferably 0 - 3%, the burning rate retarding and / or accelerating substance.

The base wrapping material for the tobacco product wrapping material to be used according to the invention usually consists of cellulose fibers obtained, for example, from flax, softwood or hardwood. To alter the properties of the base wrapper material, if desired, various blends of cellulosic fibers can also be used as the base wrapper material.

Die Flächenmasse des erfindungsgemäß eingesetzten Rauchwarenumhüllungsmaterials beträgt üblicherweise 15 bis 60 g/m2, vorzugsweise 18 bis 40 g/m2.The basis weight of the tobacco product wrapping material used according to the invention is usually 15 to 60 g / m 2 , preferably 18 to 40 g / m 2 .

A further aspect of the present invention is a method for reducing the carbon monoxide content in the flue gas, incorporating calcium carbonate fillers of different particle size in a suitable mixing ratio into a smoking article wrapping material while maintaining the air permeability of the tobacco wrap material, one of the calcium carbonates having a particle size of 0.1 to 2 μm and incorporated in a proportion of 51 to 99%, based on the total content of calcium carbonate fillers, and another calcium carbonate has a particle size of 3.5 to 10 microns and in a proportion of 1 to 49%, based on the total content Calcium carbonate fillers, is incorporated.

According to the invention, it has surprisingly been found that by suitable incorporation of the abovementioned calcium carbonate fillers in a suitable mixing ratio, the air permeability of the tobacco product wrapping material can be maintained. At the same time, however, can be surprisingly reduced by the inventive incorporation of said Calciumcarbonatfüllstoffe the proportion of carbon monoxide in the flue gas and the ratio of carbon monoxide to dry condensate can be reduced in a favorable and desired manner.

A further aspect of the present invention is a tobacco article comprising a tobacco rod, a tobacco product wrapping material, the filler thereof, two calcium carbonate particles of different particle size and quantity, each having a particle size of 0.1-2 μm and 51-99%, and 3.5-10% μm particle size and 1 -49% proportion, and optionally comprises a filter.

The particle size of the calcium carbonate used according to the invention was determined by means of a sedigraph.

A further aspect of the present invention is a method for reducing the carbon monoxide content of smoking ingredients in a smoking article comprising a tobacco rod, a smoking article wrapping material and optionally a filter, the method being characterized by incorporating into the smoking article wrapping material as filler a calcium carbonate of different particle size , wherein one of the calcium carbonates has a particle size of 0.1 to 2 microns and is incorporated in an amount of 51-99%, based on the total content of calcium carbonate fillers and another calcium carbonate has a particle size of 3.5 to 10 microns and in one Amount of 1 - 49%, based on the total content of calcium carbonate fillers, is incorporated.
