  • the present invention has for its object to provide a cigarette paper that gives a cigarette made therefrom sufficiently high SE values to comply with the legal requirements, but on this cigarette at the same time the highest possible FB value, and a reduced carbon monoxide in the smoke causes and affects the taste as little as possible.

More specifically, the inventors have found that it is not necessary for the purposes of self-extinguishing that the tape consists of a full-surface printed area. Description

GEBIET DER ERFINDUNGFIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a cigarette paper that gives self-extinguishing properties of a cigarette made from it, wherein the acceptance of this cigarette in the smoker is affected as little as possible and the content of carbon monoxide in the smoke is reduced compared to comparable cigarettes. More particularly, it relates to a cigarette paper to which a pattern in the form of ribbons having certain properties is applied, and to a cigarette made therefrom.

It is a goal of the tobacco industry to produce cigarettes that have a lower tendency to cause fires. Such cigarettes are already part of legal regulations in various countries and regions, such as USA, Canada, Europe or Australia. To determine if a cigarette has a lower propensity to cause fire, use one of the tests described in ISO 12863 or ASTM E2187.

Vielfach verlangen die gesetzlichen Bestimmungen, dass von 40 getesteten Zigaretten mindestens 30 verlöschen müssen, also SE≥75%.In this case, a smoldering cigarette on a defined substrate, for example, 10 layers of the filter paper Whatman no. 2, and it is observed whether the cigarette extinguished before the entire visible tobacco part is turned off. This is called self-extinguishment (SE). The proportion of self-extinguished cigarettes on the substrate is expressed as a percentage of the total number of cigarettes tested. Often the legal requirements require that of 40 tested cigarettes at least 30 must extinguish, so SE≥75%.

One way to achieve self-extinguishment of a cigarette in this test is to print ribbons on the cigarette paper transversely so that they lie circumferentially on a cigarette made from this cigarette paper. These Tapes may be made of a variety of materials, for example, cellulose, cellulose derivatives, starch, starch derivatives or alginates have achieved commercial importance.

The function of these bands is based primarily on the fact that they hinder the access of oxygen to the cone of smoke of the cigarette and thus lead to self-extinction of the cigarette. Since the access of oxygen during glaring is primarily determined by the concentration difference between the interior of the cigarette and the environment, that is, by the diffusion, it is important to choose the diffusion capacity of these bands sufficiently low.

The measurement of the diffusion capacity of such bands can be carried out with a corresponding measuring device from Sodim ( CO 2 Diffusivity Meter) . The diffusion capacity describes a gas transport through the cigarette paper driven by a concentration difference. It therefore designates the gas volume passing through the paper per unit time, per unit area and per concentration difference and thus has the unit cm 3 / (cm 2 s) = cm / s.

However, the necessary for the self-extinction of the cigarette low diffusion capacity of the applied to the cigarette paper tapes not only the oxygen transport to the cone of embers but also the transport of gases, especially carbon monoxide, from the inside of the cigarette to the outside in the environment. Therefore, in a self-extinguishing cigarette equipped with tapes, a higher content of carbon monoxide in the smoke is observed compared to the same cigarette without tapes. However, the potentially increased fire safety should not increase the toxicity of the smoke, which is why there is great interest in at least not increasing the content of carbon monoxide in the smoke. In addition, the content of carbon monoxide in the smoke is also limited by law in some countries.

Another disadvantage of the self-extinguishing cigarette is that the material that has been applied in the tapes on the cigarette paper, with the tobacco part of the cigarette burns, is smoked by the smoker and thus can change the taste of the cigarette. Again, there is great interest in minimizing such taste changes.

Finally, even if the cigarette has self-extinguishing properties on a suitable substrate, it should not extinguish by itself during normal smoking, for example in the ashtray. The repeated lighting of the cigarette severely affects the acceptance of such cigarettes by the smoker and may also adversely affect the composition of the smoke in terms of toxicity.

A test to determine the self-extinction in free glare, ie without substrate, is not standardized and not part of legal regulations. In most cases, the cigarette is conditioned to ISO 3402, then lit and stored in a horizontal position so that the air through free convection from all sides unhindered access to the cigarette has. A certain number of cigarettes, for example 40 pieces, is tested by this method, and it is determined at which portion of the cigarettes the entire visible tobacco part smolders, so the cigarette does not extinguish by itself. This percentage is often referred to as Free-Burn (FB) and expressed as a percentage. Although not part of legal regulations there is an interest in the industry that as few cigarettes go out in this test, so the value for FB is as high as possible. Generally, a value of at least 30% for FB is acceptable, but preferably the value should be 70% or higher.

It is known from the prior art that a minimum width of 4 mm bands is required in order to achieve self extinguishing at all. In practice, however, it usually turns out that to comply with the statutory provisions typically 6 mm wide, full-surface printed bands on the cigarette paper are necessary. The necessary width of the bands depends essentially on the selected tobacco mixture. The distance between the bands usually results from the length of the tobacco part of the cigarette, since it is often required by law that at least two bands must be on the tobacco part.

All in all, one would like to reach the sometimes contradictory goals of a high value for SE and a high value for FB with unchanged taste and at least not increased carbon monoxide content in the smoke. However, several attempts at development in this direction have made only partial progress.

A known approach, which has also found commercial dissemination, is to divide a 6 mm wide band into two bands of 3 mm each and separate them 1 mm apart. This achieves improvements in FB, however, while the area covered by the tapes on the cigarette paper is the same size as in the normal 6 mm wide tape, so that the amount of material applied in the tapes is at least not lower, so there are no advantages in terms of taste or Carbon monoxide content of the smoke can be expected.

Variants have proven to be unsuccessful in which the band edges are not straight but, for example, in the form of a waveform in order to achieve improvements in the FB value. However, considerable quantities of material are applied to the cigarette paper in such a way that it can not directly contribute to self-extinguishing. So you need more material or more printed area to meet the legal requirements for self-extinguishing. This can have negative effects on the taste and content of carbon monoxide in the smoke. Similar approaches where the band edges are straight but the amount of material applied decreases from the center of the band to the band edges were not successful for the same reason.

There is therefore a need to make the above-mentioned, partially contradictory goals even better compatible.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG DER ERFINDUNGSUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention has for its object to provide a cigarette paper that gives a cigarette made therefrom sufficiently high SE values to comply with the legal requirements, but on this cigarette at the same time the highest possible FB value, and a reduced carbon monoxide in the smoke causes and affects the taste as little as possible.

This object is achieved by a cigarette paper according to claim 1 and a manufacturing method according to claim 16. Advantageous developments are specified in the dependent claims.

In the following, the terms "printed", "printed area" or similar expressions should not be limited in their meaning to the fact that material was actually printed, but that material was applied by any method, so for example by spraying.

According to the invention, the object is achieved in that the cigarette paper comprises tapes which are applied to the cigarette paper so that they can come to rest in the peripheral direction of a cigarette manufacturable therefrom, ie substantially in the transverse direction of the cigarette paper, and on the one reducing the diffusion capacity Material is applied. In this case, a band comprises two strip-shaped outer zones and an intermediate, strip-shaped middle zone, which have the following properties:
  • the outer zones of the band have a width of at least 0.4 mm and at most 1.0 mm, preferably at most 0.8 mm and particularly preferably at most 0.6 mm,
  • on the outer zones of the belt said material is applied substantially over the entire surface,
  • the outer zones immediately adjoin the middle zone,
  • on the outer edges of the central zone said material is not applied over the entire surface,
  • said material is applied to at least 70%, preferably at least 75% and at most 95%, preferably at most 90%, of the area of the middle zone,
  • the area to which said material is applied is path-coherent, and
  • the area of the central zone to which said material is applied is path-coherent.

The inventors have found that in this particular belt form, a better balance of self-extinguishing characteristics (high value for SE) on the one hand and the ability to free glow (high value for FB), less material application and lower CO Concentration in the smoke, on the other hand, can be better reconciled than with the bands of the prior art. More specifically, the inventors have found that it is not necessary for the purposes of self-extinguishing that the tape consists of a full-surface printed area. Instead Suffice it that a relatively narrow, substantially full-surface printed outer zone can inhibit the glow of the cigarette sufficiently, but then it is not absolutely necessary that the glowing in the following area, ie the middle zone, is printed over the entire surface. Here, the term "applied substantially over the entire surface" is intended to include both the preferred case that actually 100% of the outer zones are printed, as well as cases where there are very small unprinted areas due to process-related fluctuations.

In the middle zone, the material application can therefore contain recesses, as long as three conditions are met. First, at least 70%, preferably at least 75% of the area of the central zone should be printed to ensure reliable self extinguishment. Furthermore, the surface to which the material is applied should be path-coherent in the topological sense. This means that there is always a steady path between any two points on the printed surface of a band that connects the two dots and runs entirely in the printed area. Simply put, the recesses in the printed area must not divide the printed area into several separate parts. In addition, it must also be required that even the middle zone alone is path-coherent, that between two arbitrary points of the printed area of the middle zone of a band there is always a steady path connecting the two points and the whole in the printed area of the middle one Zone runs. Investigations by the inventors have shown that the property of being path-coherent is an essential criterion for ensuring the self-extinguishment, which has independent significance in addition to the areal proportion of the material application in the middle zone. The band edges are preferably straight and parallel to each other. Deviating from this, for example, wavy band edges are less suitable for the purposes of the invention, but nevertheless should not lead out of the scope of the invention.

The "outer edges" of the central zone referred to above are here two imaginary lines, straight and parallel to the band edges, indicating at which point of the band, viewed from outside to inside, the recesses in the material application begin , Namely, while the material in the outer zones is applied substantially to the entire surface, the outer edge of the middle zone, or in other words the boundary between the central zone and the adjacent outer zone is defined by the line on which said material is not applied over the entire surface but on which one of the recesses mentioned begins.

Preferably, the bands have certain symmetry properties. As mentioned above, the bands are applied to the cigarette paper so that they come to rest in the circumferential direction in a cigarette made therefrom, d. H. essentially in the transverse direction of the paper, that is to say essentially orthogonal to the running direction of the paper web through the paper machine. However, at the time of paper production, one still does not know in which direction the paper will fade on the finished cigarette, so that the bands should have the same functional properties in both directions of glow. Preferably, therefore, the pattern of application of the material within a band consists of two halves separated by an imaginary centerline of the band, the order pattern of a band half being mirrored at the centerline or rotated 180 ° about a centerline pivot point and a centerline optional parallel shift parallel to the center line in the order pattern of the other half band can be transferred.

Preferably, the tape has a width of at least 4 mm, more preferably at least 5 mm. However, the band should not exceed a width of 10 mm, preferably 7 mm. A width of about 6 mm has proven to be particularly suitable, which corresponds to the width of such bands usual in the field, but due to the incomplete application of material in the central zone a better FB value, a lower CO content in the smoke and Total less material is allowed.

In preferred embodiments, the distance between the bands is at least 5 mm, preferably at least 10 mm, and more preferably at least 15 mm. However, the distance should be at most 50 mm, preferably at most 30 mm and more preferably at most 25 mm. Particularly preferably, the spacing of the bands is selected so that there are at least two complete bands on a cigarette made from this paper. Furthermore, the tape must have a sufficiently low diffusion capacity to ensure self-extinction according to ISO 12863. For this purpose, the band preferably has a diffusion capacity of at most 1.0 cm / s, preferably at most 0.8 cm / s and / or at least 0.01 cm / s, preferably at least 0.1 cm / s. These values refer to a measurement after conditioning of the paper according to ISO 187 with a CO 2 Diffusivity Meter from Sodim, using a measuring head with an opening of 4 × 20 mm. The opening of the measuring head should be completely on the belt. It goes without saying that at the same time surfaces with and lie without material application under the opening of the measuring head. However, this is not to be considered for the test of the measurement result against the specified limits.

The amount of material applied to the strip, expressed as mass per application surface in the dried state, is preferably at least 1 g / m 2 , preferably at least 3 g / m 2 and / or at most 8 g / m 2 , preferably at most 6 g / m 2 . With such order quantities, the desired properties can be achieved in an advantageous manner.

In a preferred embodiment, the amount of material per printed area is substantially constant. In this case, the term "substantially constant" should in particular mean that it varies by less than 10%, preferably by less than 5%. If the application is carried out in a gravure printing process, this can be ensured, for example, by the fact that the volumes of the cells of the gravure cylinder differ by less than 10%, preferably by less than 5% from each other.

In an advantageous embodiment, the diffusion capacity reducing material comprises a material selected from the group consisting of starch, starch derivatives, cellulose, cellulose derivatives and alginates, or a mixture thereof. Further, the diffusion capacity reducing material may contain a filler, in particular a carbonate or an oxide, preferably lime, magnesium oxide, aluminum hydroxide or a mixture thereof. Additionally or alternatively, the diffusion capacity reducing material may also contain a fire salt, in particular trisodium citrate or tripotassium citrate or a mixture thereof being suitable.

The invention is applicable to all known cigarette papers, also irrespective of whether the paper is intended for machine-made or handmade cigarettes.

In a preferred embodiment, the untreated cigarette paper has an air permeability according to ISO 2965, which is between 5CU and 300 CU, preferably between 10 CU and 200 CU. The untreated cigarette paper additionally or alternatively has a basis weight of between 10 g / m 2 and 60 g / m 2 , preferably between 20 g / m 2 and 40 g / m 2 . The cigarette paper may comprise wood pulp, pulp of annual plants, especially flax or hemp, or other fibrous materials such as sisal or jute, or a mixture thereof.

Dabei beträgt der Anteil des Brandsalzes bezogen auf die Masse des unbehandelten Zigarettenpapiers vorzugsweise höchstens 5 Gew.-% und besonders bevorzugt zwischen 0,5 Gew.-% und 3,0 Gew.-%.Furthermore, the untreated cigarette paper may contain a filler whose proportion based on the total paper mass is at least 10% by weight, preferably at least 15% by weight and / or at most 45% by weight, preferably at most 40% by weight. In this case, the filler may be formed in particular by a carbonate or an oxide, preferably by precipitated lime, magnesium oxide, aluminum hydroxide or mixtures thereof. Furthermore, the cigarette paper preferably contains a fire salt, in particular trisodium citrate, tripotassium citrate or a mixture thereof. In this case, the proportion of the Brandsalzes based on the mass of the untreated cigarette paper is preferably at most 5 wt .-% and particularly preferably between 0.5 wt .-% and 3.0 wt .-%.

Likewise, the cigarette paper may be coated on its entire or parts of its surface with compositions containing, for example, flavorings or the ingredients of the smoke, in particular the so-called Hoffmann analytes, unless these compositions contribute significantly to the self-extinction of a cigarette made from this paper. Such coatings, if present, may be applied on either side of the paper or on both sides and may be applied before or after the application of the tapes of the invention.

The invention further relates to a method for producing a cigarette paper according to one of the abovementioned embodiments. Preferably, said material is applied in the form of a composition, in particular a solution, an emulsion or a suspension which contains a solvent and said material. In this case, the term "solvent" is to be understood broadly and should in particular not suggest that the composition is actually a "solution" in the chemical sense, instead, as said, suspensions are also conceivable as suitable and preferred compositions.

Preferably, the solvent is water because it is toxicologically safe. Although in principle organic solvents can also be used, of which, however, even after the paper has dried, residues always remain in the paper, which can impair the odor of the paper. The odor of such residues of organic solvents is sometimes found annoying by the smoker when the cigarette pack is opened for the first time.

The material that remains on the paper after drying must be capable of occluding the pores of the cigarette paper by forming a film on the surface of the paper or by penetrating the pores so as to reduce the diffusion capacity of the paper in the printed areas , Starch and starch derivatives, cellulose and cellulose derivatives and alginates or a mixture thereof are particularly suitable for these purposes. In an oxidatively degraded, completely dry starch, the proportion is 5 wt .-% to 30 wt .-%, preferably 10 wt .-% to 25 wt .-% based on the composition. In many cases, one will choose the proportion of material remaining on the paper in the composition based on the viscosity required by the application process.

Preferably, said composition is applied in a printing process, in particular gravure printing or flexographic printing, which can be carried out easily and stably on an industrial scale. An order, for example, by spraying is also possible.

The order is preferably carried out on that side of the cigarette paper, which faces the tobacco, so the inside, on a cigarette made therefrom. Usually, this is the screen side, as it has a lower lime content compared to the top, which has a positive effect on the visual appearance of the tobacco ashes. An order on the better for the pressure itself suitable top is easily possible, but not preferred.

Although it is possible to coat the material in multiple layers with the usual drying process after the application of each layer, the preferred embodiment is to apply all the material in one layer. This avoids the need to precisely position the individual layers of a tape one above the other. This is difficult because the bands per se on the cigarette should not be visible and therefore can hardly be detected with conventional sensors. In practice this has the consequence that the edges of the individual printed layers are not precisely superimposed, so that there is a gradual decrease in the amount of material applied during the transition from the printed to the unprinted areas, which is undesirable.

Since the application of large amounts of a water-based composition to the paper may result in wrinkling after drying, the composition may also contain substances that reduce wrinkling, such as propylene glycol or glycerin. Other substances, such as dyes or flavorings, may also be included in the composition, provided that they do not significantly negatively impact the self-extinction of the cigarette made from this paper. In principle, legal and toxicological aspects must be taken into account when selecting all substances and materials.

In an advantageous embodiment, the paper is aftertreated to remove or reduce wrinkles. Preferably, after application of the composition and after a first drying process, the paper is subsequently moistened and subjected to a further drying process, preferably under mechanical stress, for example stretching or stretching of the paper web. This "mechanical" wrinkle removal process is advantageous in that it can eliminate the need for additional substances in the composition.

For a better understanding of the present invention, reference will be made below to the preferred embodiments illustrated in the drawings which are given by way of example specific terminology are described. It should be understood, however, that the scope of the invention should not be so limited since such changes and other modifications to the illustrated cigarette paper and method of manufacture, as well as such other uses of the invention as set forth herein, are to be considered as current or future knowledge of the art competent expert.

Using the example of in FIG. 3 shown printing pattern is to be explained the division of a belt 10 in zones. The belt 10 runs on the paper in the transverse direction, indicated by an arrow 12 and delimited by two belt edges 14a and 14b from the untreated cigarette paper (not shown). The imaginary, straight, parallel and transverse lines 16a and 16b separate outer zones 18a and 18b from a central zone 20. The one outer zone 18a is thus located between the band edge 14a and the imaginary line 16a and the other outer zone 18b between the band edge 14b and the imaginary line 16b. The middle zone 20 is bounded by the two imaginary lines 16a and 16b.

The outer zones 18a and 18b are substantially printed over the entire surface, while the lines 16a and 16b themselves are not printed along their entire length. Likewise, the middle zone 20 is not printed over the entire surface. The printed area or the application area 22 is in Fig. 3 indicated by hatching in the left part of the figure and is broken through recesses 24 without material. In this sense, the middle zone 20 is not "printed over the entire surface". The surface 22 to which the material is applied, however, is path-coherent in the topological sense. This means that between any two points of the printed area or application surface 22 of the band 10 there is a continuous path that extends completely within the printed area 22. Likewise, in this sense, the printed area of the middle zone 20 is path-coherent.

The band 10 of Fig. 3 is mirror-symmetrical with respect to a center line 26 which extends in the longitudinal direction of the belt 10. This means that the tape 10 has the same self-extinguishing behavior regardless of the glow direction. Therefore, it is not necessary in the preparation of the cigarette paper to decide on which direction it will smolder in the cigarette made therefrom. A likewise suitable for this purpose symmetry is a rotational symmetry about a pivot point, which on the Centerline 26 is located. This is for example in the band of Fig. 2 the case. In the volume of Fig. 6 go the two band halves above and below the midline (in Fig. 6 not shown) by a reflection at the centerline in combination with a parallel translation along the centerline apart, which is also a suitable symmetry to evoke glow direction independent behavior.

As the cigarette paper, a commercial cigarette paper of wood pulp and precipitated lime as a filler having a basis weight of 24 g / m 2 , a filler content of 33% by weight and an air permeability of 75 CU was used. The cigarette paper also contained 1% by weight of tripotassium citrate as the fire salt.

Der Bandabstand betrug in allen Fällen 18 mm.On this cigarette paper were each gravure printing tapes with the print patterns from the Figures 2-9 applied. The applied composition consisted of water, 15.5% by weight of absolutely dry oxidatively degraded starch and 9.5% by weight of lime. For comparison, a full-surface printed, 6 mm wide tape was applied to the paper. The band gap was 18 mm in all cases.

The diffusion capacity of the tapes was measured after conditioning the paper according to ISO 187 with a CO 2 diffusivity meter from Sodim. The probe had an aperture of 4 × 20 mm and was positioned so that the entire opening was within the band. The diffusion capacity of all print samples was between 0.09 cm / s and 0.60 cm / s.

From the cigarette papers cigarettes were made with an American blend tobacco blend and tested 40 pieces according to ISO 12863 on their self extinguishing and determines the value for SE. Likewise, 40 pieces were tested for their value for FB. The cigarette was first conditioned in accordance with ISO 3402, then lit and smoldering in a holder in a horizontal position, ie with the longitudinal axis of the cigarette orthogonal to the direction of gravity, so that the air could flow freely from all sides to the smoldering cigarette. The cigarette was so far shielded from air movements that the gas was transported only by free convection. The number of cigarettes smoked on the entire tobacco rod without the cigarette extinguishing itself was determined and expressed as a percentage based on the number of cigarettes tested (FB).

The cigarettes were machine smoked according to a method specified in ISO 4387, and the content of carbon monoxide was determined from the collected gas phase.

The results for SE and FB as well as the content of carbon monoxide (CO) are in the in Fig. 1 listed table. There is also for each of the print patterns from the Figures 2-9 the proportion of the printed area 22 lying in the middle zone 20 is given in percent relative to the entire area of the middle zone 20.

One recognizes from the table of FIG. 1 in that, as the proportion of the printed area 22 in the middle zone 20 decreases, the value for SE decreases and that for FB increases. The print pattern of FIG. 2 has a SE value of 100%, but the value for FB is quite low at 30%. But since the value is significantly higher than that for the 6 mm wide, full-surface band, the print pattern of FIG. 2 still considered to be according to the invention. A small increase in the diffusion capacity can still increase the value for FB, without endangering the sufficient self-extinction.

The print patterns of Figures 3 - 5 are among the preferred embodiments because for all these print patterns, both the value for SE and that for FB are very high.

The print pattern of FIG. 6 shows very good values for FB, but the value for SE at 70% is just below the usual legal requirements of 75%. Here, the value for SE can be further increased by a slight reduction of the diffusion capacity, without lowering too much for FB.

The print pattern of FIG. 7 is not according to the invention because the value for SE is no longer sufficiently high. This pattern shows that despite a high proportion of the printed area in the central zone 20 of 84.16%, sufficient self-extinguishing is not ensured. In this print pattern, neither the entire printed area 22 nor the printed area of the central zone 20 is path-coherent, but it is split into two parts, both of which do not co-operate sufficiently to ensure self-extinction. The self-extinguishing test shows that the cigarette can continue to glaze along the unprinted areas across the belt 10, thus overcoming the belt.

Also the print pattern of FIG. 8 is not wegzusammenhängend and therefore not according to the invention, but falls into three parts. Here, too, the self-extinguishing (SE) rate is 60% too low.

Similarly, the print pattern of FIG. 9 with a share of 67.84% printed area 22 in the middle zone 20, a far too low rate for self extinguishment. Again, this pattern is not in accordance with the present invention because the proportion of printed area in the middle zone is too low and, moreover, the central area is not path-coherent so that the cigarette may continue to glow along the unprinted channels in the belt.

Also the print pattern of FIG. 10 is not according to the invention. This pattern has not been tested because no behavior substantially different from the likewise not according to the invention printing pattern of FIG. 7 is to be expected. In the print pattern of FIG. 10 but the printed area 22 is path-coherent while the printed area of the middle zone 20 is not path-coherent. This shows that these two properties are independent of each other.

Based on the values for carbon monoxide, it can be seen that all print patterns of the Figures 2-9 lower values result than a 6 mm wide, fully printed ribbon. Thus, it shows an improvement over the known from the prior art tapes.

In addition, the printing patterns of the Figures 2-9 only 67.84% to 92.80% of the area of the middle zone 20 printed. This means a savings of about 7% to about 23% of the material compared to a full-surface, 6 mm wide band and thus a smaller impact on the taste of the cigarette.

In addition to these advantages, the patterns according to the invention can also be printed efficiently in a single-layer application, so that it is possible to dispense with the variation of the application quantity within the printed surface as proposed in the prior art.

Overall, contrary to expectation, it does not appear necessary for the tape to consist of a full-width printed area several millimeters wide, but it is sufficient for a relatively narrow outer zone, printed over the entire area, to glow Cigarette can inhibit enough, so that the subsequent areas of the tape must not be printed over the entire surface. In fact, in the case of self extinguishing, it is observed that the glow cone does not continue to glow below the band but already extinguishes at the very beginning of the band. On the other hand, one must not offer the glaze cone behind the narrow, essentially completely printed zone zones that are too large unprinted areas and, in particular, no unprinted channels extending in the longitudinal direction of the cigarette, since the glaze cone may glow along the areas along these channels.

Overall, the printing patterns according to the invention are of such a nature that material is essentially only applied to the cigarette paper where it contributes directly to self-extinguishment. In this way, the applied amount of material can be minimized and one achieves a reduction of the content of carbon monoxide in the smoke and a minimization of the taste influence.
