Definitions
- the invention relates to a coating suitable in particular for a cutting tool, to a cutting tool provided with such a coating, and to a production method for producing the relevant coating.
- Cutting tools are regularly provided with coatings to increase the cutting performance, the service life or for other reasons, which realize the respective desired properties.
- a cutting tool in the form of a cutting plate which has a wear-reducing coating.
- This is formed for example by an Al 2 O 3 layer.
- the wear-reducing coating extends over both rake surfaces and over open surfaces of the cutting tool.
- An indicator coating for example in the form of a cover layer, whose color differs significantly from the color of the wear-resistant layer, is attached to the open surfaces. At the free surface entering erosion of the decorative layer is thus an unerring indicator of a successful use of the respective adjacent cutting edge.
- the layers are produced over the entire surface in the CVD process while the decorative layer is removed from the rake surfaces. For this purpose, suitable brushing or the like can serve. When mechanically removing the decorative layer from the rake surfaces care must be taken to achieve a good selectivity. Damage to the wear protection layer can not be tolerated.
- Cutting plates which are produced in the PVD process generally have as a wear protection layer a metallic hard material layer, such as a TiAlN layer. Such a cutting plate is for example from the DE 199 24 422 C2 known.
- Cover layers applied to such a wear protection layer such as TiB 2 layers or the like, have, like the wear protection layer, a metallic-crystalline structure. The adhesion between such cover layers and the wear protection layer is high. The tribological properties of the outer layers must therefore be taken into account when they are used as decorative layers. They are also not suitable as a wear indicator.
- the covering layer must have properties with regard to its wear properties with respect to its friction properties and with respect to other properties which have an effect on metal cutting.
- EP 0 732 423 describes a coating applied to a main body of a cutting tool.
- the coating comprises an inner layer comprising, for example, a carbide, carbonitride, carbon oxide, carbon oxide or titanium boron nitride.
- an intermediate layer of aluminum oxide and / or zirconium oxide is applied on the inner layer.
- the outer layer, which in turn is applied to the intermediate layer may, for example, a carbide, carbonitride, carbon oxide, Karbostickoxid or a boron nitride of titanium.
- the alumina or zirconia of the intermediate layer is a good heat insulator and limits or reduces the amount of heat transferred from the outer layer to the main body.
- the outer layer is sufficiently thick to have low wear, while the inner layer ensures a stable connection of the coating to the base body.
- US 2002/0039521 is a cutting insert with a coating known, which is applied to a base body.
- the coating consists of an aluminum oxide-containing wear protection layer and a cover layer applied thereto. A separation layer is not present.
- a multi-layer coating for a cutting tool is also off EP 1 094 132 A1 known.
- a wear protection layer is applied to a substrate.
- the outermost layer forms a cover layer.
- a release layer which reduces the adhesion of the cover layer.
- the coating according to the invention according to claim 1 or 2 contains as wear protection layer a metallic hard material layer, which is covered to the outside by a reduced adhering or limited by a release layer in its adhesion to the wear protection layer top layer.
- the cover layer occupies only a part of the surface of the metallic hard material layer, ie parts of the same are exposed.
- a release layer is arranged, which interrupts or weakens the metallic-crystalline bond between the cover layer and the wear protection layer. It is an adhesion-impeding or reducing layer which interrupts or at least disturbs the metallic-crystalline structure of the other layers.
- the release layer reduces the adhesion of the cover layer on the metallic hard material layer, which serves as a wear protection layer, to a low level.
- the separating layer is for this purpose composed of an unstoichiometric composition or is a strained layer with an internal tensile stress of about 0.8 GPa.
- the cover layer can be removed relatively easily. This makes it possible, on the one hand, to design the cover layer as a decorative layer purely in terms of aesthetics, the tribological properties and the wear properties not playing any role. It is abraded immediately when using the cutting tool. This also opens up the possibility of using the cover layer as a wear indication layer. This applies in particular if the metallic hard material layer serving as wear protection layer and the cover layer differ markedly in color.
- the wear protection layer is preferably a layer produced in the PVD process, wherein the release layer and the cover layer are also produced in the PVD process.
- This enables the production of the coating in a single PVD coating process, wherein the cover layer, preferably including the release layer, is removed in a mechanical reworking process.
- the post-processing can be done by brushing, sandblasting or the like. It is applied by the action of the release layer removal times of a few seconds. For example, by blasting with alumina (fine corundum) at a pressure of only one bar and a beam time of only two seconds so complete removal of a TiN cover layer of 0.2 microns achieved that optically even at tenfold magnification of the surface no remnants of Cover layer are more visible.
- the wear protection layer metallic Hard material layer
- the adhesion of the cover layer is nevertheless sufficient to allow safe handling of the cutting tools without damaging the cover layer.
- a first use of the cutting tool is immediately recognizable by partial removal of the cover layer.
- the cover layer in this case serves as a deployment indicator which responds when the tool is used for the first time.
- Titanium or hafnium layers and oxidic (heteropolar) layers such as TiO 2 are suitable as a cover layer, for example.
- Other oxides, carbides or nitrides of metals of the fourth or fifth subgroup are also suitable.
- Cover layers with a metallic-crystalline structure are preferred.
- the separation layer has, for example, no metallic-crystalline structure. This can be achieved by using an oxide layer of a subgroup metal, preferably the fourth or fifth subgroup, as the release layer. Good results result in thin layers of, for example, about 0.1 ⁇ m TiO 2 TiCN layers or other CN layers that are extremely soft and low in friction. Good results are also achieved with MOS 2 layers.
- the release layer is an extremely unstoichiometric layer or even an extremely stressed layer, which limits the adhesion between the cover layer and the wear protection layer. It can be used strained TiN layers or DLC layers (diamond like carbon).
- the selection of the respectively suitable separating layer depends on the fact that it can be integrated into the PVD deposition process for the production of the entire coating as far as possible without additional expenditure.
- the separating layer effectively forms a 'predetermined breaking point' for any layers above it.
- the wear protection layer (metallic hard material layer) can in the simplest case have a single-layer structure. If necessary, a multilayer construction can also be used.
- the proposed coating can be produced in PVD process without much effort, the deposited cover layer can be subsequently easily removed mechanically. This makes it possible to produce multicolored cutting tools in a simple and efficient manner. Under cutting tools are understood here as complete cutting tools, such as solid carbide drills, milling tools and the like, as well as only inserts, indexable inserts, cutting inserts and the like.
- FIG. 1 an insert 1 as a cutting tool or at least a substantial part thereof is illustrated.
- the cutting plate 1 has a top surface, which forms a rake surface 2, and side surfaces, the open spaces 3, 4 form. This designation applies to radial installation of the cutting insert 1. In the case of tangential or lateral installation, the side surfaces serve as rake surfaces while the top surface serves as the free surface. Between the clamping surface 2 and the free surfaces 3, 4 cutting edges 5, 6 are formed.
- the cutting plate 1 is a carbide cutting plate.
- FIG. 2 illustrates the cross section of the same fragmentary and extremely enlarged view.
- the cutting plate 1 has a base body 7, the surface of which forms the substrate for a coating 8 provided on the cutting plate 1.
- the coating 8 is applied in the PVD process.
- a wear protection layer 9 is provided, which is formed as a metallic hard material layer MH.
- a TiAlN layer titanium aluminum nitrite
- the thickness of the TiAlN layer can be appropriately determined. In the present embodiment, it is about 4 microns.
- the ratio between titanium and aluminum is 33:67.
- the cover layer 12 is preferably again a metallic-crystalline layer, such as a TiN-layer.
- the thickness thereof is for example 0.2 ⁇ m. In this case, it is a pure decorative layer with golden yellow color. This color is clearly different from the color of the wear protection layer 9, which has a different color.
- the separation layer 11 is, for example, a titanium dioxide layer (TiO 2 ), which can be chosen to be relatively thin. It is sufficient, for example, a thickness of 0.1 microns. This oxide layer has no metallic character and thus limits the adhesion of the cover layer 12 to the wear protection layer 9.
- the specified coating 8 can be produced in one and the same reaction vessel of a PVD coating system in one go, wherein the wear protection layer 9, the release layer 11 and the Cover layer 12 are deposited sequentially.
- the separating layer 11 and the covering layer 12 may, as shown above, be chemically and / or structurally different layers. But it is also possible to combine them into a release and cover layer, the peculiarity of which is the limited adhesion to the wear protection layer 9.
- the release layer 11 in this case also forms the cover layer.
- the main body 7 is brought into a corresponding PVD coating system, in which first the wear protection layer 9, then the release layer 11 and then the cover layer 12 are deposited on the base body 7.
- the coating 8 thus produced is first produced on all exposed surfaces of the base body 7, ie at least on the rake surface 2 as well as on the flanks 3, 4. In this state, the cutting plate 1 is removed from the PVD reactor vessel.
- the cover layer 12 of the corresponding differently colored ausschden surface in this case the clamping surface 2, removed.
- a sand blast 14 as in FIG. 3 is indicated.
- Aluminum oxide fine corundum mesh 320

Description

- In
