Definitions
- the invention relates to a fuel cell system with at least one fuel cell module from a stack of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells.
- PEM polymer electrolyte membrane
- a fuel cell system with a PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) fuel cell module is from, for example
- EP 07 74 794 Bl known. It is also known to use such PEM fuel cell modules at elevated temperatures, i.e. Operating temperatures above 60 ° C as the normal operating temperature of the PEM fuel cell. In this case, one speaks of an HT-PEM fuel cell. With HT-PEM fuel cells, the working temperature is in a temperature window between 60 ° C and 300 ° C, in particular in the range from 120 ° C to 200 ° C.
- the operation of the fuel cell is insensitive to contamination of the hydrogen-rich fuel gas obtained from the fuel by means of a reformer or of the hydrogen (H 2 ). Since the hydrogen-operated fuel cell is generally supplied with an excess of hydrogen, the exhaust gas on the hydrogen side of the fuel cell usually still contains a residual amount of hydrogen. This residual hydrogen must be returned to the system or it can be released into the environment.
- Fuel gas is disadvantageous because it also contains a high proportion of non-flammable gases.
- the object of the invention is therefore to provide an alternative solution for the recycling of the hydrogen.
- an HT-PEM fuel cell module is assigned an exhaust gas catalytic converter for hydrogen and / or carbon onoxide and / or hydrocarbon. If the HT-PEM fuel cell module is operated exclusively with pure hydrogen, the exhaust gas catalyst in particular can render the excess hydrogen harmless and does not get into the environment. It is particularly advantageous here that the thermal energy released in the generally exothermic catalyst can be supplied to the reformer upstream of the PEM fuel cell.
- Catalysts known from the prior art are used as exhaust gas catalysts.
- a platinum network for example, is particularly suitable as a hydrogen analyzer.
- Such a catalyst can be electrically heated and in particular be at the operating temperature of the HT-PEM fuel cell.
- the single figure shows a block diagram of the operation of an HT-PEM fuel cell in connection with an exhaust gas catalytic converter.
- the system of a fuel cell system is designated by 10 in the figure.
- Such a system 10 includes a fuel cell module and associated auxiliary units.
- a fuel cell module 20, which is constructed in the manner of a PEM fuel cell, is indicated by way of example.
- PEM stands for a hydrogen and oxygen fuel cell with solid electrolytes using the so-called proton exchange method (proton exchange membrane), in which a polymer electrolyte layer (proton electrolyte membrane) forms the essential component of the fuel cell.
- MEA membrane electrode assembly
- the hydrogen for the operation of the HT-PEM fuel cell module 20 is generated in a reformer 110 indicated in the figure from a liquid fuel, for example gasoline, methanol or other higher hydrocarbons, or is taken from a hydrogen storage device not shown in the figure.
- the oxidant is provided from the ambient air. Since there is an excess of hydrogen, hydrogen is released into the environment at the outlet of the hydrogen side of the membrane electrode assemblies of the fuel cell module 20. Such hydrogen exhaust gases are undesirable and should be largely prevented.
- the PEM fuel cell module 20 is assigned a hydrogen catalyst 25. With such a catalyst, the hydrogen in the exhaust gas of the HT-PEM fuel cell module 20 is rendered harmless.
- a platinum network serves as the exhaust gas catalytic converter 25 for hydrogen (H 2 ). Since the chemical conversion of hydrogen is an exothermic process, heat energy is released. The heat released is advantageously fed to the reformer 110.
- the exhaust gas catalytic converter or the exhaust gas itself can also be heated to the operating temperature of the fuel cell, in particular of the HT-PEM fuel cell module 20.
- Such a hydrogen-rich fuel gas can also be used to operate the HT-PEM fuel cell, which is obtained, for example, from gasoline, methanol or other higher hydrocarbons and also contains impurities of carbon monoxide and / or hydrocarbons as secondary constituents.
- PEM fuel cell is advantageously tolerated.

Abstract
Description
Beschreibung
