Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for transmitting data to an electronic component of a motor vehicle.
- Navigation systems have been used increasingly in motor vehicles recently. These navigation systems determine a driving route from a location and a destination, continuously determine the current position of the vehicle and provide the driver with driving instructions for reaching the destination.
- Known navigation systems of this type have an input unit via which the destination can be entered, for example. With these systems, one or more destinations are always entered immediately before the journey begins in the vehicle itself. Since the input unit does not have a keyboard similar to a typewriter, the name of the destination is usually entered by sequential selection and selection of the letters shown on a display. Especially when entering several intermediate destinations, the input is comparatively lengthy and complex. This applies in particular if further entries are to be made in addition to the destination, such as the time at which individual destinations are to be reached.
- US 56 54 908 it is known to store individual data of a user in an electronic notebook and to transmit this information from the electronic notebook to a navigation system in a motor vehicle.
- the navigation system determines the destination based on the information received.
- the data can be transmitted via radio waves, a mobile telecommunications network or infrared radiation. In the case of data transmission via a mobile A portable telephone can be used in the telecommunications network. However, no further details are given.
- a data transmission method for transmitting data messages is known from DE 197 43 257 A1.
- the method is described on the basis of the transmission of messages between traffic telematics devices that transmit data via a so-called GSM-SMS air interface.
- GSM is the standard for mobile communications in Europe.
- SMS is a short message service whose data formats are specified in the GSM-03.40 specification. With the help of the SMS any application data up to a length of 1120 bits can be transmitted via a point-to-point connection.
- DE 197 43 257 A1 describes communication between a traffic telematics center and any traffic telematics terminals, in particular with regard to the so-called floating car data method. The transmission of individual data of a single user, which can only be used by this user, is not addressed there.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a method with which a simplified condition of electronic devices in motor vehicles, in particular simplified data entry, can be achieved, the data being individual data which are not for a large number of users are provided.
- the object is achieved by a method for transmitting data to an electronic component of a motor vehicle, the data being generated in a computer system arranged outside the motor vehicle, the data being transmitted from the computer system to a service center for short messages and delayed on request from the service center are transmitted to the electronic component of the motor vehicle via a mobile radio connection as an individual short message in the format of a short message service.
- the method according to the invention thus relates to purely individual data to which only one or a few users have access.
- a driver who, for example, has a business trip the next day prepared, select the appropriate destinations or other data on your home PC.
- the user can, for example, a common route planning program for PC's use.
- the navigation-relevant data such as the destination or the telephone number of a customer, the zip code or the exact address of the destination, are then transmitted to the Internet as a short message, for example via a landline connection and modem, and stored in a corresponding service center for short messages.
- the method according to the invention has the advantage that route planning can take place before the start of the journey and the data can be called up at any time later as a short message.
- route planning can also be carried out by a central office, for example, which assembles the customers to be approached the next day for customer service vehicles and transmits this data as a short message to the service center.
- the driver of the customer service vehicle can then query the data of his customers to be visited via a short message. Since the transmission of short messages is usually comparatively slow, undesired waiting times may occur when the short message is transmitted directly from the planning station to the motor vehicle. Because the short messages are retrieved from the service center according to the invention, these waiting times can be shortened.
- a mobile radio connection to the service center is established and the data are automatically transmitted from the service center to the electronic component.
- This automatic transmission and establishment of the mobile radio connection can in particular also be initiated by a certain operating step on the electronic component, such as, for example, pressing a button.
- the method can be used for the transmission of data for various electronic components in the motor vehicle, so that, for example, setup settings or personalized data such as the setting of a seating position or the like are transmitted.
- the electronic component is a navigation system and the data is data relevant to navigation.
- the data can also include telephone numbers, postal codes or addresses. Route planning is carried out in the navigation system based on the transmitted data.
- map data carried in the vehicle is used in particular.
- the map data are stored, for example, on a CD-Rom or a DVD in a manner known per se.
- the route planning can, however, also be carried out externally, with the necessary data such as the starting point and the destination being transmitted in a manner known per se via a mobile radio connection to a center in which the route planning is carried out.
- the short message service is, in particular, a short message service in a GSM mobile radio network, in particular an SMS message service.
- the data is transported via a so-called short message service center SMS-SC.
- the service center accepts the short messages of up to 160 characters and forwards them to the recipient in the vehicle.
- the short messages are transmitted between the mobile station and the service center using a transport protocol called SM-DP.
- SM-DP transport protocol
- the short messages can be transported further outside the GSM network to the SMS-SC in various ways. Further details on these methods, which are known per se, can be found, for example, in the book by Jörg Ebers Georgcher and Hans-Jörg Vogel: GSM, Globel System for Mobil Communication, BG Teubner Stuttgart 1997, pages 177-179.
- a motor vehicle navigation system with a central processing unit, which is connected to an input and an output unit and a mobile phone, wherein data relevant for vehicle navigation can be transferred to a memory element of the navigation system via the mobile phone is characterized in that the navigation system for automatic retrieval the data is designed as an individual short message from a short message service center.
- the navigation system has means for converting the format of the short messages.
- FIG. 1 A flow chart
- FIG. 2 A block diagram of the essential components
- the user first carries out route planning on the PC in step S1.
- route planning programs for personal computers can be used.
- results data are produced that contain, in particular, destinations.
- the data can contain, for example, the geographical position of the destination, a telephone number or a postal code.
- a postal code is used to define a specific city, for example, while a telephone number is used to define an exact address with city, street and house number.
- the data generated is then sent as a short SMS message via a modem to an SMS service center (S2).
- SMS short message is saved in the SMS-SC. This completes the first part of the procedure.
- step S10 If the user is now in the vehicle, he can start the navigation system (step S10 in FIG. 1B). A mobile radio connection is then established between the navigation system and the SMS-SC by pressing a corresponding call button. The SMS is then called up by the navigation system in step S11 and transmitted to the navigation system by the SMS-SC in step S12. In step S13, the SMS is finally stored in a memory element of the navigation system in the vehicle. The SMS data is then converted into a format that can be processed further by the navigation system. For this purpose, a corresponding software module is available in the navigation system. If the data are transmitted, for example, as telephone numbers, then a certain geographical position is assigned to the corresponding telephone number in the navigation system.
- Corresponding databases are available in the vehicle and stored, for example, on a CD-ROM or DVD.
- the route is then calculated in step S12 using the converted data.
- the route calculation is done in the conventional way Wise.
- route guidance information is output to the driver until the driver has reached the destination.
- the route planning is done on the PC 11 outside the vehicle.
- the data generated in this way are forwarded to the SMS-SC 10 via a radio or landline connection via the Internet.
- the navigation system is located in the vehicle, the central component of which is the computing unit 1.
- An operating unit 2 and an optical output unit 3 and an acoustic output unit 4 are connected to the computing unit 1. Settings of the navigation system can be made via the input unit 2.
- Route guidance information is output via the optical output unit 3, for example in the form of arrows, while the route guidance information is output acoustically via the acoustic output unit 4.
- the navigation system in the vehicle has, for example, a memory element designed as a CD-ROM 5, which is connected to the central processing unit 1.
- a route is calculated by a calculation module in the computing unit 1 using the map data of the CD-Rom 5.
- the navigation system also has a GPS receiver unit 6, via which satellite signals are received, which are evaluated for position determination.
- the navigation system also has a direction sensor 7 and a distance sensor 8.
- the connection between the navigation system and the mobile radio telephone 9 can be a wired or a wireless connection. In the case of a wireless connection, a short-range radio connection is preferred, in particular using the Bluetooth method.
- the data transmission between the SMS-SC 10 and the motor vehicle takes place via a mobile radio connection to the mobile radio telephone 9.
