  • device 58 provides for selectively controlling the position of electric spindle 56, and therefore of tool 62, along axis 61, and for selecting a given cutting edge 63 at each operating cycle of relative unit 10a, 10b; while the slope of direction 55, and therefore of axis 61, with respect to directions 18 and 25 provides for disengaging all the other cutting edges 63 of tool 62 from the work edge 8.
  • roller 45 and periphery 5 are tangent to each other at least one point of contact, and that the rotation axis 31 of shaping device 32 extends parallel to direction 25 and through said point of contact (in the example shown, roller 45 is a substantially cylindrical roller, which is tangent to periphery 5 at a line of contact parallel to direction 25 and with which axis 31 coincides).
  • tool 62 can machine a first portion of periphery 12 substantially comprising a first half of face 14a, face 13a, and a first half of face 14b, and can round off respective edges 15 connecting face 13a to faces 14a and 14b.
  • unit 10b can then be operated in the same way as unit 10a, so that relative tool 62 machines a second portion of periphery 12 substantially comprising a second half of face 14a, face 13b, and a second half of face 14b, and rounds off respective edges 15 connecting face 13b to faces 14a and 14b.
  • Units 10a, 10b being relatively compact, squaring-edging machine 1 is relatively short in direction 7. Moreover, the design of units 10a, 10b enables work station 9 to be equipped with one operating unit 10 capable of machining the whole of periphery 12 of edge 8.
