Definitions
- the present invention relates to switch input circuits.
- the invention relates to a switch input circuit a power-saving device, for example during the supply of a Wetting current on the switch or switches.
- the resistor would be 1800 Ohm, and at 24 volts would consume 320 mW. At the maximum of 32 volts the resistor would consume 570 mW.
- the pulse width modulation signal becomes the base of the transistor fed to periodically allow the wetting current through the emitter and Collector of the transistor in the switch input circuit according to the Duty cycle of the pulse width modulation signal flows.
- the step of providing the approximation further includes an increase in the duty cycle of the pulse width modulation signal if the detected number of activated switches increased.
- the method further includes the step of determining the Voltage level of a voltage supply to the circuit.
- the step of determining includes the detection of the voltage level below Using an analog-to-digital converter to get one for the voltage level representative digital value.
- the method preferably includes further the steps of the determination, starting from the digital value, which Voltage levels from a variety of preselected voltage levels Has voltage supply, and adjustment of the working cycle of the Pulse width modulation signal depending on the relevant voltage range of the Voltage supply.
- the present invention furthermore offers a switch input circuit with a current source for providing the wetting current to at least one switch by a corresponding resistance element characterized by modulation means for modulating the wetting current to provide a reduced average power consumption of the corresponding resistance element, the modulation means including a microcontroller configured to generate a pulse width modulation signal, the circuit further including the step of detecting the number of switches turned on connected to the switch input circuit, and the circuit further comprising means for providing the adjustment of the Pulse width modulation signal in response to the detected number of switches turned on.
- Embodiments of the invention can advantageously be implemented without additional hardware can be realized, provided that those normally used on the inputs Filter capacitors are sufficient to ensure electromagnetic compatibility ensure, and the microcontroller the appropriate pulse width modulation (PWM) signal can deliver.
- PWM pulse width modulation
- Figures 1 and 2 show a switching system 2, which includes a circuit 4, which has a number of parallel switches 8 and a switch input circuit 6.
- the switch input circuit 6 comprises a number of lines 16 corresponding to the number of switches, each line being connected through an upstream resistor R s to the voltage supply V BAT through a transistor 12.
- an earthed capacitor can also be connected to each line 16 if this is required for electromagnetic compatibility.
- a control line 14 is connected to the base of transistor 12 for controlling the flowing current. By increasing the voltage in the control line 14 can the transistor 12 are turned off, and by lowering the voltage of the Control line 14, transistor 12 can be switched on. So if so alternating signal such as a PWM (pulse width modulation) signal which Control line 14 is supplied, the power supply to the circuit 4th be switched on and off periodically.
- PWM pulse width modulation
- the PWM signal By using PWM (pulse width modulation) control of the wetting current, it is possible to reduce the size and cost of the switch input circuit 6, as well as the power loss of the pull-up resistor R s . Essentially, the PWM signal generates an input signal to the circuit 4 with an average voltage which is lower than the battery voltage and which therefore consumes less power (since power is directly proportional to the voltage). This means that while the transistor is on, the peak current is greater than the normal wetting current, but the average value of the wetting current will be the correct wetting current over a long period of time.
- the switch input circuit 6 can be a simple RC filter circuit, as in Figure 2 included to include any electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduce which would otherwise be generated by the switch input circuit 6 could.
- EMI electromagnetic interference
- the switch input circuit 6 includes a microcontroller (not shown) for Feeding the PWM signal to the control line 14 and receiving the input from each of the lines 16 via a voltage divider circuit as either in FIG. 3 or 4 shown.
- the microcontroller has appropriate outputs and inputs for Connection with lines 14 or 16.
- the microcontroller is a commercially available programmable type, which generate a PWM signal of different duty cycles can.
- the inputs from lines 16 can be from the microcontroller Feedback control can be used to match the PWM duty cycle to determine to provide the necessary wetting current to the circuit 4.
- the resistor R F will consume some power and reduce the wetting current.
- the value must be chosen depending on the application of the invention, so that not too much power is consumed when all switches are switched on.
- the microcontroller detects the number of active (switched on) switches and adjusts the PWM operating cycle accordingly. If the number of active switches increases, the PWM duty cycle is increased by the microcontroller. Conversely, if the number of active switches decreases, the PWM duty cycle is reduced by the microcontroller.
- the duty cycle of the PWM signal can also be in response to changes in the Battery voltage can be adjusted to further reduce power consumption.
- the microprocessor can be limited to the detected battery voltage in several Areas react, and thereby effectively feedback-free control of the PWM signal provide.
- the microcontroller used here is preferably a Analog-to-digital converter to easily detect the analog voltage level as a to allow an 8-bit value (for example).
- the power consumed by the resistor to about 200mW be restricted. If the microprocessor also has battery voltage ranges (e.g. Range 1: 18-25V, range 2: 25-32V) is detected, then one is in the higher range lower PWM duty cycle used to reduce the amount of power consumed (around 110mW if the voltage range is 25-32V). Further calculations and Details are given below.
- the PWM duty cycle can be achieved by means of a closed feedback system continuously modified in response to the measured battery voltage , however, this would place greater computational stress on the microprocessor require
- Another advantage of providing PWM modulation of the wetting current is that that a resistor from the normal voltage divider circuit (shown in Figure 3) can be saved and used to turn the voltage on the switch into voltages convert that the microcontroller can sample. Because the average supplied voltage is lower, the pull-down resistor in the divider saved and only maintain the upstream resistor for current limitation become.
- Inputs from 24 volt systems to a microcontroller with 0 - 5 volt inputs should be by using a voltage divider (e.g. 100K and 33K resistors) be reduced. If the average voltage using pulse width modulation is sufficiently reduced, then the 33 k pull-down resistor can be removed, leaving only the upstream 100k resistor.
- a voltage divider e.g. 100K and 33K resistors
- the switch input circuit can be implemented without additional hardware. However, another option is to use a simple RC low pass filter, as far as required for electromagnetic compatibility. A microcontroller with built-in PWM output is preferred, but this can be done using a normal microcontroller output connector can be achieved. For additional The microcontroller also needs a means of recording the power reduction Battery voltage, even if not continuously (e.g. by using an analog-to-digital converter) then at least by two different ones To detect voltage supply areas.
- a suitable microcontroller is the Motorola MC68HC08AZ32. This unity is an 8-bit controller, which has an 8-bit analog-to-digital converter and a software programmable PWM output with a variable duty cycle and variable Frequency.
- the control software of the microcontroller can provide a fixed PWM output Use lowering the average voltage or must when using the RC Filters 10 the PWM duty cycle to be used depending on the number of set pressed switch. Furthermore, the PWM duty cycle can be dependent be adjusted by the battery voltage.
- the microcontroller should monitor the switches in the normal way, but it must Record the sampling point of the signal.
- the switch input can only be scanned while the wetting current is supplied. To do this for optimal performance expand would mean scanning just before the wetting current is switched off, takes place (to ensure maximum wetting), but can also be at another time during the pulse, with time constants in the switch circuit of RC filter effects are to be considered.
- a The microcontroller's procedure represents the number of currently pressed switch and dynamically adjusts the PWM duty cycle Match lookup tables. When the battery voltage detection the function must be switched to another lookup table, or alternatively apply a transfer function to the existing lookup table to modify.
- the frequencies of the PWM operation must take into account several factors, such as. the generated electromagnetic interference (EMI) can be selected, especially in the audio frequency range (e.g., if applicable, in connection with the EMI filter circuit).
- EMI generated electromagnetic interference
- the switching losses in the Driver transistor at high frequencies must be considered.
- the frequency is high enough so that the instantaneous current I INST (which is stronger than the average current ) does not adversely affect system components (pull-up resistor, driver transistor, switch contacts).
- I INST instantaneous current
- the power consumption of these components during the ON cycle may exceed their nominal power before the turn-off time (OFF time) allows them to recover or cool off.
- the frequency should be higher than 100 Hz to meet this requirement.
- the frequency should not be in the audio frequency range (20 Hz - 20 kHz), otherwise could be radiated or transmitted electromagnetic interference (EMI) other Component elements such as Car radios (through perceptible noise in the Speakers).
- EMI transmitted electromagnetic interference
- the frequency should be lower than the crossover frequency of the driver transistor because above this frequency the transistor rapidly loses gain and possibly is not put into operation at all. This is typical at 1MHz for Multi-purpose transistors
- an RC filter has been specifically chosen to generate electromagnetic interference to reduce, then the frequency must be combined with the time constant of the RC filter to be selected.
- Example (3) Using PWM control, including battery voltage detection in two areas
- the wetting current is 10mA at 18 volts.
