Definitions
- the present invention relates to a drive chain guard for use in a Toner station in electrophotographic printers and copiers.
- the The present invention provides a drive chain protection assembly for protecting the drive chain the toner station before contact with toner, as this will damage the drive chain could result in a shorter chain life.
- Electrophotographic printers that use a developer based on dry toner, include a toner station with a toner housing that serves to Transport developer mixture to an image development area where the toner is applied to a photoconductor bearing an electrostatic image. The toner reacts electrostatically with the photoconductor and temporarily bonds with the Photoconductor before it is transferred to the paper.
- the toner cartridge is usually driven by a chain, which in turn is powered by a sprocket is driven, which is held on a shaft, which in turn by a Gear is driven, which is driven by the main drive of the copier.
- Such drive chains are usually made of polymer material Encloses pins that engage the teeth of the drive sprockets. To the right one To maintain chain tension, the drive chain must remain flexible. The contact with the Polymer materials from which the drive chains are made, however, can be one Stiffen the chain, which considerably limits its usability and the usable life of the chain is shortened so that it can be replaced early must become. Unfortunately, the drive chains are arranged in an environment in contact with toner is very likely.
- the toner is in one large toner container, but it is possible that toner The toner container is spilled by the user, leaving toner directly on the drive chains falls.
- toner dust escapes from the device during normal operation Development area of the printer, caused by air flows caused by the moving Parts of the devices are generated. In this way, toner dust inevitably comes out of the Image development area out and into the open areas of the toner station, see above that there will eventually be contact with the drive chains. Modifications the toner station with the purpose of spilling the toner and escaping into it Minimizing other areas can be costly or given the spatial Conditions inside the printer may even be impossible.
- toner stations for opening are designed so that an upper part of a lower part can be pivoted away via a hinge for cleaning and Allow maintenance of the components of the toner station.
- Any device for protection the chains before contact with toner dust must therefore be opened with the Toner station be compatible by keeping the top of the station in relation to the lower part of the station can be swiveled away, and by avoiding accumulated toner on the Drive chains drop when the toner station is open. There is therefore a need for one improved device for protecting the drive chains from contact with toner dust.
- the present invention solves this as well as others in the prior art existing problems by including a flexible chain guard that the Main drive chain of the toner station covers the chain against spilled toner shields and guides the toner away from the chain when the toner station is open.
- the flexible chain guard also works with a rigid, fixed chain guard together to protect the drive chains and sprockets against excessive contamination protect with toner dust.
- An exemplary embodiment of the present invention is a electrophotographic printer that includes a toner station that rotates with a Toner housing is equipped, which can be driven by at least one drive chain.
- On Photoconductor is arranged adjacent to the toner housing and forms one between them Image development area.
- Flexible drive chain protection is adjacent to Image development area arranged.
- the flexible Drive chain protection essentially flat and includes a sealing area that is located immediately adjacent to the image development area, the Sealing area consists of a fiber material, such as felt, and in the Photoconductor engages to prevent toner from leaking out of the image development area reduce.
- the electrophotographic printer also includes a rigid drive chain guard that is adjacent to the flexible drive chain guard is arranged such that the rigid and the flexible drive chain guard each other overlap.
- the rigid drive chain guard can be installed on a toner refill assembly be arranged, which is located adjacent to the toner station.
- the toner station comprises an upper part and a lower part, which are connected by a hinge, the upper Part can be pivoted around the hinge to be separable from the lower part, so that There is access to the lower part.
- the flexible drive chain guard is adjacent to Drive chain arranged and remains adjacent to the drive chain when the upper part of the Toner station is pivoted away in relation to the lower part of the toner station.
- the flexible drive chain guard is bendable to swing away the upper part of the Allow toner station in relation to the lower part of the toner station.
- FIG. 1A, 1B and 2 show a typical toner station 10 according to the invention with a Developer mixer 12 and developer bucket 14.
- the toner is the Developer mixer 12 fed through a toner refill opening, not shown, and in the Developer mixer 12 mixed with a special carrier to make one To employ two-component developers.
- the mixed developer pours into the Developer cup 14 and rotates to developer into the toner housing 16 to introduce, which in turn applies toner to a photoconductor 13, which is for example, a rotating film web from where the toner to form the Print image is applied to the paper.
- the photoconductor 13 is closely adjacent to the Toner housing 16 by means of at least one and preferably two film support strips 19 preloaded, which can be operated to apply a downward pressure on the Apply photoconductor 13 and the photoconductor in the appropriate position with respect to Bring toner housing 16.
- the downward movement of the film support strips 19th can create a differential pressure that causes toner from the Development area 11 is "blown out", i.e. from the area where the Toner housing 16 and the photoconductor 13 are arranged closely adjacent.
- the toner housing 16 is rotated by means of at least one drive chain, wherein in the preferred embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the toner housing is driven by two drive chains.
- a main and an intermediate drive chain includes, many printers work with a single drive chain that changes the position of the Main drive chain 34 occupies. It should be noted that the invention is the same Way applicable to printers with one, two or more drive chains are equipped.
- the developer mixer 12 is driven by a mixer shaft 18 which passes axially passes through the developer mixer 12 and is in turn driven by a gear connected to the printer's main motor drive (not shown).
- a first intermediate drive sprocket 20 is attached to one end of the mixer shaft 18.
- the developer bulk cup 14 is supported by an axial cup shaft 22 driven.
- a second intermediate drive sprocket 24 is on a needle bearing 26 rotatably mounted to a cup auxiliary shaft 25 which is press-fit in one end of the Cup shaft 22 sits.
- the needle bearing 26 is seated in a recess in the cup shaft 22 second intermediate drive sprocket 24 is therefore not driven by the cup shaft 22, but only runs on the end of the cup shaft 22 and is by one Intermediate drive chain 28 driven around and over the first and second Intermediate drive sprocket 20, 24 runs. That caused by the mixer shaft 18 Rotation of the first intermediate drive sprocket 20 is thus over the Transfer intermediate drive chain 28 to the second intermediate drive sprocket 24.
- a main drive sprocket 30 is attached to the second intermediate drive sprocket 24 so that the second intermediate drive sprocket 24 directly connects the main drive sprocket 30 drives.
- the main drive sprocket 30 drives a toner housing drive sprocket 32 a main drive chain 34.
- the main drive chain 34 is one Main tensioning sprocket 36 tensioned, which is attached to a tensioning arm 38 which with a Arm shaft 42 and a cylindrical arm arm 44 is provided.
- the Tension arm 38 is supported on the frame 45 of the toner station at a lower end 46 and is freely rotatable around this breakpoint. Since the tension arm 38 to the outside of one Tension spring 40 is biased causes rotation at the lower end 46 of the Tensioning arm 38 tensioning the main drive chain 34.
- the main drive chain 34 is immediately contaminated by spilling toner when changing the toner bottle (not shown) and by Leakage of toner dust from the image developing area 11 when the printer is operated exposed. Therefore, there is a flexible chain guard between these sources of contamination and the main drive chain 34.
- the flexible chain guard is best in Fig. 3 recognizable.
- the flexible chain guard 50 starts from the tension arm shaft 42 and is attached to this and passes around and over the cylindrical tension arm head 44, then further along the entire length of the main drive chain 34 and is at the end of it End block housing 27 attached.
- the flexible chain guard 50 is arranged such that its width overlaps the development area in which toner is placed on a (not shown) is applied, and extends laterally such that the Main drive chain 34 is shielded from toner dust that is above the Main drive chain 34 occurs. This way, the entire length of the Main drive chain 34 that could be exposed to toner dust through the flexible Chain guard 50 protected.
- the flexible chain guard 50 also directly includes a sealing area 51 adjacent to the development area 11.
- the support bar supports 53 are on the flexible chain guard 50 attached immediately adjacent to the sealing area 51.
- the Support bar supports 53 stop the downward movement of the film support bars 19 at a predetermined distance above the toner housing 16, and allow the Film support strips 19, the photoconductor 13 in close proximity to the toner housing 16 bring, however, prevent the film support strips 19 a pressure on the photoconductor 13th exercise that could interfere with the rotation of the photoconductor 13 or the toner housing 16.
- the Sealing area 51 consists of fiber material, for example of felt, so that when the Film support strips 19 press the photoconductor 13 down, the fibrous part of the Sealing area 51 comes into weak contact with the photoconductor 13, whereby Virtually a seal is created so that toner leaks out of the Development area 11 is prevented or reduced.
- the flexible chain guard 50 is made of any suitable, non-conductive material producible with sufficient elasticity.
- the flexible chain guard 50 is made of a polymer manufactured by General Electric GE VALOX FR-1, 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) thick.
- the flexible chain guard can be on the tension arm shaft 42 and the end block housing 27 in conventional Be fastened in a manner that is, by means of adhesives, screws, rivets, etc.
- the exemplary embodiment is the flexible chain guard 50 on the tension arm shaft 42 and on the End block housing 27 attached with double-sided tape.
- a toner refill assembly 60 includes a toner feed tube 62 and a frame 64 provided with rails 63 for receiving the toner bottle.
- a (not shown) toner bottle which with a specially for locking with the rails 63rd designed head is provided in the frame 64 to put toner in the Feed the toner refill assembly 60.
- Toner is removed as needed by the Toner feed tube 62 is fed into the developer mixer 12.
- the wheels (not shown) which drive the toner feed tube 62 are covered by a rigid wheel cover 66 and protected.
- a rigid chain guard 68 is attached to the wheel cover 66.
- the chain guard 68 is an integral part of the Wheel cover 66, while the wheel cover 66 with the rigid chain guard 68 is formed in one piece.
- the rigid chain guard 68 is arranged so that it extends from the Toner refill assembly 60 extends toward the toner station 10, in one Height sufficient to support the rigid chain guard 68 over the main drive chain 34 to be arranged, whereby the main drive chain 34 is protected against toner dust.
- the flexible chain guard 50 overlaps the rigid chain guard 68, thereby preventing that toner dust comes into contact with the main drive chain 34.
- Fig. 6 shows a toner station 10 in the open position and shows how the flexible chain guard can catch 50 loose toner dust from the main drive chain 34, when the toner station is opened for service or maintenance. If the When the toner station 10 is opened, the flexible chain guard 50 bends so that the upper one Part of the toner station can be pivoted away from the lower part of the toner station, without the flexible chain guard 50 being impaired. The flexible chain guard 50 remains in place and covers the main drive chain 34 at all times, while any toner dust on the flexible chain guard 50 over the cylindrical Tension arm head 44 could have accumulated, leads away from the main drive chain 34.
