Definitions
- the technical field of the present invention is that of igniter tubes, in particular for artillery ammunition.
- the igniter tubes are intended to ensure the ignition of the propellant charge of an ammunition.
- the known igniter tubes generally consist of a rear initiation block intended to initiate an ignition composition disposed inside a tubular body which is integral with the rear block.
- the igniter tubes are generally made integral with the ammunition by screwing the rear unit onto the base of the ammunition socket.
- Today, the ammunition used consists more and more frequently of a socket of combustible material and of a generally metallic shutter base.
- the only non-combustible part which is ejected from the chamber of the weapon, then temporarily stored inside the turret, is the shutter base, of reduced bulk.
- patent FR2593905 proposes to replace the metallic tubular body with a heat-shrinkable sheath which ensures the maintenance of the ignition tablets and their attachment to the rear block.
- Patent EP0100840 describes an igniter tube comprising a combustible tubular body which separates from the metal rear block. Thus if the tubular body is not completely consumed, it does not remain attached to the rear unit but is ejected from the tube. For this, a separation charge is placed in a cavity made in the rear unit and in contact with the tubular body.
- the major drawback of such a solution is its complexity which induces difficulties in production and implementation, which generates a high cost.
- the object of the present invention is to provide an igniter tube which overcomes such drawbacks.
- the igniter tube according to the invention does not remain attached to the shutter base after firing and the latter can be ejected and stored in the best conditions.
- the igniter tube according to the invention is of simple design and of moderate cost.
- the subject of the invention is therefore an igniter tube, in particular for a propellant charge of an artillery ammunition, consisting of a tubular body receiving an ignition composition, igniter tube characterized in that the tubular body comprises at least one receiving surface oriented so as to receive the pressure of the propellant gases generated during the ignition of the propellant charge, gas thus ensuring the driving of the igniter tube.
- the pressure-receiving surface may be a disc disposed substantially radially to the tubular body.
- the disc may be placed at the upper end of the tubular body.
- the disc may include a cylindrical seat of diameter substantially equal to the internal diameter of a combustible case of the ammunition.
- the disc may include vents allowing filling with propellant charge of the ammunition.
- the tubular body may be extended at its lower end by a tubular sleeve.
- the tubular sleeve may come to cover a rear initiation block secured to a base of the ammunition or an intermediate piece secured to the socket and a rear initiation block.
- the ignition composition will be placed in an internal channel of the tubular body, a channel delimited at its upper end by a wall secured to the disc and in its lower part by a spangle.
- the ignition composition may be powdery or formed by a stack of tablets and include an axial channel.
- the ignition composition may include at least two energetic ignition cords.
- the tubular body may have a flared portion at its upper end intended to facilitate the exit of the ignition cords.
- a very first advantage of the device according to the invention is that the tubular body of the igniter tube is ejected from the barrel of the weapon.
- shutter base of the ammunition does not present any projecting element after firing. It therefore has a minimum bulk and can thus be ejected from the weapon chamber, then stored in the turret in an optimal manner.
- Another advantage lies in the fact that the combustible case of the ammunition is stiffened at the disc, which improves its mechanical strength.
- FIG. 1 is a partial view in longitudinal section of an ammunition receiving an igniter tube according to a first embodiment of the invention
- FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the igniter tube along the section plane AA of Figure 1
- Figure 3 is a partial view in longitudinal section of a munition according to an alternative embodiment
- Figure 4 is a partial view in longitudinal section of an ammunition receiving an igniter tube according to a second embodiment of the invention.
- an igniter tube 1 according to the invention is mounted on an artillery ammunition 2 comprising a projectile 3, which is here of the arrow type and of which the tail only is seen.
- the projectile 3 is associated with a propellant charge 4 contained inside a combustible case 5.
- a metallic shutter base 6 closes the case 5.
- the igniter tube 1 consists, in a conventional manner, of a rear initiation block 7 screwed to the shutter base 6 and of a tubular body 8.
- the rear unit 7 conventionally comprises an ignition means constituted for example by an electric or percussion igniter 9 connected to a pyrotechnic relay 10 flame enhancer.
- the igniter 9 and the relay 10 are separated by a spacer 11 and are made integral with the rear unit 7 by an annular crimp 12.
- the tubular body 8 comprises lateral vents 13 regularly distributed angularly and axially which are intended to allow the passage of combustion gases from an ignition composition 14, for example of powdery black powder, disposed in an internal channel 15 of the body tubular.
- an ignition composition 14 for example of powdery black powder
- the channel 15 is delimited by an internal sheath 16, made for example of tin, which makes it possible to contain the ignition composition and to preserve it from the effects of humidity until the time of its combustion.
- the sheath 16 thus provides temporary closure of the side vents 13.
- the tubular body 8 has at its upper end 22 a wall 17 which closes the internal channel 15. This wall could be replaced by a plug made integral with the body, for example by bonding, clipping or screwing.
- the internal channel 15 can thus receive the ignition composition 14 and then be closed by a straw 18 preferably made of combustible material.
- the tubular body 8 is extended at its lower end 23 by a sleeve 19, tubular and of larger diameter than the body, covering the rear initiation block 7.
- the sleeve 19 is fitted on the rear block 7 in a sliding fit , so that it can slide freely on the latter.
- the sleeve 19 could also be temporarily linked to the rear unit 7, for example by clipping.
- the sleeve could have pins coming to engage inside a groove made at the periphery of the rear block.
- the tubular body 8 also extends GJ side of its upper end 22 by a disc 20 arranged radially.
- the disc 20 has a cylindrical seat 21 of diameter substantially equal to the internal diameter of the combustible socket 5.
- the cylindrical seat 21 perfectly centers the igniter tube 1 inside the socket 5 and promotes its guidance. It also makes it possible to increase the bearing surface of the disc on the combustible bushing, which limits the mechanical stresses at the level of the contact.
- the cylindrical surface 21 thus reinforces the rigidity of the socket at the level of the rear of the projectile 3. It thus reduces the risks of embrittlement or even of rupture of the cartridge case during the various transport and loading operations of the ammunition.
- the tubular body 8, the sleeve 19 and the disc 20 are produced in one and the same piece, but may very well be composed of several separate pieces which would be joined together.
- the tubular body 8, sleeve 19 and disc 20 assembly is preferably made of an inert material and compatible with the propellant charge.
- it is produced from a polymer such as, for example, high density polyethylene and can be obtained by molding, extrusion or blowing.
- this assembly could be made of semi-combustible or combustible material.
- the ignition composition 14 may have an axial channel in order to promote the propagation of the combustion of the ignition composition. This channel may be delimited by a tube, for example made of combustible material, placed at the center of the composition.
- the ignition composition 14 can also be produced in the form of a stack of annular tablets.
- the side vents 13 can be replaced by holes which do not open out and which have the initiation of ruptures broken during the rise in pressure of the gases generated by the ignition composition 14.
- the disc 20 comprises openings 24, for example four in number, regularly distributed angularly. They make it possible to fill the propellant powder 4 with the lower part of the socket situated between the shutter base 6 and the disc 20.
- the gills 24 have a size and a shape such that a pressure-receiving surface 25 remains. sufficient to allow the propellant gases to ensure a displacement of the igniter tube in the socket, as will be explained more lo n in the description.
- the disc 20 can also be produced in the form of a star with at least three branches, insofar as the pressure receiving surface (s) will be sufficient. In this case, provision will be made for a sufficient cylindrical bearing surface 21 at the end of each branch to ensure the guiding of the disc inside the bush.
- an igniter tube is carried out in the following manner: the sleeve 5 is placed inside the shutter base 6, - the sleeve and the base are joined in the conventional manner, as described in the patent FR2365096,
- the tubular body 8 provided with the disc 20 is placed inside the bushing 5 (the tubular body has to be brewed, heard beforehand having received its ignition composition 14),
- the propellant powder is loaded into the lower part of the socket located between the shutter base and the disc through the openings 24 of the disc 20, then the projectile and the upper propellant charge can be introduced inside the socket 5 in a conventional manner, for example by means of a housing making the projectile and its loading integral.
- a charging box is described by patent FR2622687.
- the igniter 9 When the munition is ignited, the igniter 9 then the relay 10 are initiated and ignites the ignition composition 14. The pressure generated by the combustion of the ignition composition instantly destroys the internal sheath 16 and ignites the propellant charge 4 of the ammunition through the vents 13 of the tubular body 8 of the igniter tube 1.
- the combustion gases of the propellant charge 4 cause the projectile 3 to propel as well as ejecting the tubular body 8, sleeve 19 and disc 20 assembly from the igniter tube.
- the pressure of the combustion gases of the propellant charge 4 is exerted on the pressure receiving surface 25 of the disc 20 and it is sufficient to drive the tubular body and eject it out of the tube.
- the invention has the main advantage that the igniter tube does not remain attached to the shutter base after firing and thus does not disturb its ejection from the chamber of the weapon and its storage in the turret.
- the disc is placed at the front end of the tubular body.
- the latter is thus pulled by the propellant gases of the load.
- this disc can be positioned in another place, such as for example at the median level of the tubular body.
- the tubular body may also include several disks distributed along the body. This will further improve the guidance of the igniter tube but also the rigidity of the combustible sleeve.
- Another advantage of the invention is to be able to carry out the loading of propellant powder from the front of the sleeve.
- FIG 3 shows an alternative embodiment.
- This variant differs from the previous one in that the sleeve 19 of the tubular body 8 fits onto a tubular intermediate piece 28.
- the sleeve 5 has a flange 32 on which the intermediate piece 28 is fixed by clipping.
- the intermediate piece 28 comprises a circular groove intended to receive tongues integral with the rim 32 of the socket 5.
- the intermediate piece 28 will be made for example from a plastic material such as polyamide.
- the socket 5 also has at least one opening 31 which is intended to allow the loading of propellant powder.
- the rear initiation unit 7 is secured by screwing to the intermediate piece 28. It also has a cylindrical surface 30 abutting against the flange 32.
- the disc 20 here has no hearing.
- the intermediate piece 28 is mounted by clipping onto the flange 32 of the socket 5,
- the rear initiation unit 7 is screwed onto the intermediate piece 28, - the tubular body 8 provided with the disc 20 is placed inside the socket 5 (the tubular body has of course previously received its ignition composition 14 )
- the sleeve 19 of the tubular body is fitted onto the intermediate piece 28, - the propellant powder is loaded into the lower part of the sleeve through the openings 31 of the sleeve 5,
- the shutter base 6 is mounted on the socket 5 and the rear block 7, - the base and the rear block are secured by a nut 29,
- the projectile and the upper propellant charge can be introduced inside the socket 5, as already mentioned above, that is to say by means of a housing making the projectile and its charge integral.
- the advantage of this variant is the possibility of carrying propellant powder loading from the rear of the sleeve, on the shutter side.
- This rear loading can thus avoid the use of a box like that described in patent FR2622687.
- the projectile could be secured in a conventional manner directly to the socket and the complete loading of the ammunition would be carried out by the back of the casing.
- the disc 20 must have openings to allow the filling of the volume delimited by the projectile and the disc.
- the sleeve 19 could also be temporarily linked to the intermediate piece 28, for example by clipping. This securing would secure the propellant powder loading phase by avoiding untimely translation of the tubular body 8.
- FIG. 4 represents a second embodiment of the invention.
- the igniter tube 1 receives linear energy ignition cords 26. These cords are charged with a pyrotechnic composition and are well known to those skilled in the art. We can refer for example to patent EP0344098.
- cords are introduced inside the internal channel 15 of the tubular body 8 up to the proximity of the rear initiation block 7.
- the tubular body does not have a wall for closing the channel at its upper end 22 in order to allow the passage of cords 26.
- the cords 26 leave the channel 15 through a flared part 27 and extend over the rear part of the projectile 3.
- the flared part 27 thus facilitates the passage of the cords from the igniter tube towards the tail of the projectile.
- the latter may be linked over at least part of their length and preferably at their end, so as to form a strand.
- the internal sheath of the tubular body is not necessary.
- This embodiment is particularly applicable to ammunition whose projectile is very long and penetrates deeply into the propellant charge.
- the cords arranged along the projectile or against the internal wall of the combustible case make it possible to ensure ignition at several points, which improves the performance of the ignition.
- the advantage of this second embodiment is to guide the cords inside the tubular body, which facilitates their positioning.
- cords are insensitive to any mechanical forces undergone by the munition and therefore do not risk deteriorating. In fact, they are not linked to the rear initiation block and can slide freely inside the tubular body of the igniter tube.
