Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electrical connection device usable in particular in motor vehicles to ensure the electrical connection of on-board devices, fuse boxes or relay boxes, for example.
- connection device electrical of the type comprising a female connector and a connector male, in which
- the female connector has an insulating base, which has a cell capable of receiving and guiding the male connector, and a tongue of male contact housed in said socket to ensure a connection electrical with male connector,
- the male connector comprises an insulating housing, in which is housed a female contact able to cooperate with said male contact tab to ensure said electrical connection,
- the female contact comprises a base part substantially in the form of channel, with side walls which carry, in a first region end of the base part, at least one pair of flexible blades of contact capable of enclosing said male contact tab and defining a contact area, and in a second end region of said base part, at least one pair of wings suitable for being crimped on a power supply conductor, the basic part of the female contact comprising a transition region between said contacts first and second end regions.
- the female contact usually comprises several pairs of flexible blades contact, the two contact blades of each pair having a spacing narrower than the thickness of the male contact tab of the female connector to guarantee high pressure during operation and next, good electrical contact between the contact blades of the contact female connector male and male contact tab connector female.
- the pairs of contact blades usually have lengths different to reduce the effort of inserting the male tongue into the female contact.
- the box insulator has a cage in the general shape of a parallelepiped rectangle, which is closed on four sides by two longitudinal walls and two transverse walls surrounding the contact zone defined by the pairs of contact blades.
- the cage can be closed by a cover which is connected to the cage by a flexible hinge mold coming with the cage and the cover.
- two hoops are formed on the cover and two stop notches are formed on the cage so that the hoops can hang respectively on the catch notches, by snap-fastening, when the cover is tilted on the cage to close its fifth side.
- the insulating housings and the female contacts manufactured separately, must be brought to an assembly station in which each female contact must be handled individually to be placed in a corresponding insulating box whose cover is in open position, then the cover of each box must then be manipulated so as to be placed in the closed position.
- the present invention therefore firstly aims to provide a electrical connection device in which the contact blades of the female contact are less sensitive to deformation of the side walls of the base part of said female contact, which occurs during the operation of crimping the wings of said base part onto a power supply conductor.
- the present invention aims to simplify the manufacture of the male connector of the electrical connection device, while improving sealing, in particular between the contact area and the second end region of the base portion of the female contact.
- the present invention relates to a connection device electric of the type defined in the preamble, characterized in that in the transition region, the side walls of the base part in channel shape of female contact have two wings which are curved towards each other and lean end to end against each other so as to form with said base part a closed ring of stiffening.
- the stiffening ring prevents the deformation of the walls lateral spreads from the second end region of the part basic beyond the transition region to the first region end of the base part where the flexible blades of contact.
- the invention also relates to a male connector having the characteristics indicated in the paragraphs b), c) and d) above.
- the male connector can also have one or more of the characteristics indicated in paragraphs e) to i) above.
- the invention also relates to a female contact having the characteristics indicated in the paragraphs c) and d) above.
- the female contact may also have the characteristic indicated in paragraph e) above.
- connection device 1 of Figures 1 to 3 consists of essentially a female connector 2 and a male connector 3.
- the female connector 2 has a base 4 ( Figures 1 to 3 and 10), in an insulating material which may for example be integral with an appliance electric to be connected (not shown).
- the base 4 has roughly the shape general of a rectangular parallelepiped, whose edges are oriented parallel to the direction of insertion of the male connector into the female connector are rounded.
- the base 4 has, in its face 5 (FIG. 10), which, in service, is oriented towards the male connector 3, a cell or cavity 6 of shape general rectangular, which is suitable for receiving a part 7 (figure 1) of corresponding shape of the insulating housing 8 of the male connector 3.
- a male tab 9 of electrical contact protrudes from the bottom 11 of the cell 6 and extends over most of the length of the cell 6, in the plane of symmetry of the base 4.
- the side walls of the base 4 delimiting the cell 6 comprise, inner side, grooves 12, 13, 14 and 15 able to cooperate respectively with ribs 16, 17, 18 and 19 ( Figures 5 and 8) which are carried by the part 7 of the housing 8 of the male connector 3, for guide the latter when its part 7 is inserted in the socket 6 of the socket 4 of the female connector 2.
- the grooves 12, 13, 14 and 15, on the one hand, and the ribs 16, 17, 18 and 19, on the other hand, are arranged asymmetrically in cell 6 and on part 7 in such a way that it cannot be inserted with only one possible orientation in the cell 6 of the base 4.
- the skirt-shaped part 21 of the base 4 has a projection 23 ( Figures 1 to 3 and 10) intended to cooperate with a catch 24 ( Figures 1 to 6 and 8) of a lever lock 25 which is formed in one piece, by molding, with the housing 8 of the male connector 3, to ensure locking between this last and the female connector 2 when the part 7 of the housing 8 is completely engaged in the socket 6 of the base 4 as shown in figure 3.
- the locking lever 25 is constituted by a flexible tongue which extends parallel to the transverse wall 7d of the part 7 of the housing 8, the catch 24 being carried by the face of the flexible tongue which is facing the transverse wall face 7d as shown in the figures 5 and 6.
- the flexible tab forming the locking lever 25 is surrounded on three sides by a protective cage 26 which has a shape general substantially parallelepipedic and which is formed of a single holding, by molding, with the housing 8 of the male connector 3 like this is more particularly visible in Figures 5, 6, 8 and 9.
- the cage protection 26 has a wall 26a, which extends parallel to the transverse wall 7d of part 7 of the housing 8, and two walls 26b and 26c which, in their lower part, are connected in one piece to the housing 8.
- the flexible tab forming the lever locking 25 is connected in one piece, by a curved part 25a, to the wall 26a of the cage 26, in the middle region of the upper edge of this wall 26a as shown in FIGS. 6 and 8.
- the lower end of the flexible tab forming the lever lock 25 protrudes slightly outward beyond the lower end of the cage 26, so that the lever locking can be operated manually or using a tool suitable, such as a screwdriver, when you want to detach the connector male 3 of female connector 2.
- the male connector 3 has a female contact 27 which is housed at the less partially, in the housing 8.
- the female contact 27 is shown in Figure 11 in the separate state of the male connector 3.
- the female contact 27 can be mass produced from a strip of conductive metal by known cutting and folding techniques.
- the female contact 27 comprises, in known manner, a base portion 28 substantially in the form of a channel semicircular cross section, the side walls of which bear, in a first end region 28a of the base part, at least a pair of flexible contact blades, for example three pairs of blades contact 29, 30 and 31, which, in use, are intended to enclose the male contact tab 9 of female connector 2 to establish a electrical connection with it.
- Each pair of blades 29, 30 or 31 is lyre-shaped and the pairs of blades are preferably of length different to reduce the insertion force of the contact tab male 9 in female contact 27.
- the side walls of the base portion 28 of the female contact 27 bear, in a second end region 28b of the base part, at least one pair of wings, preferably two pairs wings 32 and 33, capable of being crimped onto a power supply conductor electric current (not shown).
- the two wings 32 are crimped on a bare end of the electrical conductor, while the two wings 33 are crimped onto the sheath of said conductor.
- the two wings 34 When folding the blank thus obtained, before crimping the two pairs of wings 32 and 33 on the electrical conductor, the two wings 34 are bent towards each other, so that they rest end to end one against the other as shown in Figure 11. So the two wings 34 form, in combination with the transition region 28c of the part base, a closed stiffening ring 35, which opposes a deformation of the side walls of the base part 28 in the region end 28a thereof when the wings 32 and 33 are later crimped on the electrical conductor.
- the ring of stiffening 35 has a circular shape as shown in Figures 7 and 11.
- the entire housing 8 of the male connector 3, with the locking lever 25 and its cage protection 26, is obtained by overmolding on the female contact 27.
- the part 7 of the housing 8 constitutes a cage in the general form of rectangular parallelepiped, which is closed on four sides by two walls longitudinal 7a, 7b and two transverse walls 7c and 7d, surrounding the contact blades 29, 30 and 31, and on a fifth side by a wall of 7th bottom which is in one piece with the longitudinal walls and of the cage. 7th rear wall protrudes outwards beyond of the four walls 7a to 7d of the cage 7 and forms a seat for the joint 22.
- the bottom wall 7e is connected in one attached to the side walls 26b and 26c of the protective cage 26.
- guide ribs 37 can be advantageously formed on the internal face of the longitudinal walls 7a, 7b of the cage 7, for guiding the contact tab male 9 of female connector 2 between contact blades 29, 30 and 31 while the male connector and the female connector are fitted one in the other.
- the housing 8 of the male connector 3 When molding the housing 8 of the male connector 3, it can also be formed, in the region of the stiffening ring 35, a flange or flange 38 for hanging a protective sheath for the cable and the crimping area of the female contact 27.
- the manufacture of the male connector can be greatly simplified and its industrial cost reduced.
- the molding station which is in any case necessary for the manufacture of the male connector housing, can be integrated into the serial production line of female contacts 27, which allows eliminate transfer operations that were previously necessary to individually bring the female contacts and the housings to a assembly station, as well as the assembly operations themselves.
- the housing 8 of the male connector 3 could be molded onto the female contact 27 after the crimping operation of a sheathed electrical conductor in the crimping area formed by the end region 28b of the base part 28 and by the wings 32 and 33 of the female contact, so that the crimping area of the contact female and part of the sheath of the electrical conductor are also completely coated in the plastic of the housing 8.
- the invention has been more particularly described in About a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which the box 8 of the male connector 3 is molded onto the female contact 27, the invention also applies to a male connector in which the female contact 27, provided with a stiffening ring 35, is placed in a box of the kind described in document FR 2 778 275.
