Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for controlling a printer, especially a high performance printer, with a Variety of input points for carrier material, the Print information in a standard page description language to be provided.
- the invention further relates to a printer in which the aforementioned method is implemented.
- a printer is operated by a so-called "remote operation" higher-level control with print information according to a Standard page description language provided.
- the page description language describes the content and appearance all elements of a page to be printed, for example the Text, vector graphics, images etc., by hardware-independent Instructions.
- the device control generally contains one Interpreter for this standard page description language and puts the delivered print information into the corresponding one Hardware signals through which e.g. in a laser printer the character generator for generating the pixels is controlled.
- Known page description languages are PostScript, PCL, especially version PCL5, or IPDS.
- From US 4,763,889 A is a printer with several Known input compartments, if necessary by a central Control can be controlled.
- the control determines whether there is still paper in a first input compartment and switches to another input tray when the first tray is empty.
- the disadvantage of this printer is that the Total number of input bins limited to a small number is. This is both the diversity of the processing recording material (paper, film, Formats) as well as the total number of sheets available for the respective types of recording material limited.
- a printer in particular a high-performance printer, with several input stations, each with several input points exhibit.
- the carrier material to be printed is made from fed to one of the input points and the printing information are in a standard page description language provided from which a device control of the printer the information for printing is determined using the page description language a single entry point with a Designated destination address.
- the device control orders at least two entry points of a common logical device address the logical device address and the destination address. at Occurrence of a predetermined operating state of one of the Input positions under the logical device address is switched to the other input point and then from carrier material supplied there.
- remote operation achieves that at least two entry points, i.e. two input compartments -
- several can Input compartments are designated - pick up carrier material, to be able to print without interruption, even when an input tray is empty or due to a defect fails.
- the device control uses that of the page description language defined destination address and assigns it A logical device address under which the Input trays can be accessed. So the result is in remote operation a large number of input compartments one after the other emptied without data on the side of the page description language have to be changed. Rather, the Intervention on the part of the device control of the printer, whereby the necessary measures by assigning logical Addresses are relatively simple.
- the empty or broken one Input tray can be used by an operator or automatically be replenished so that for any length of time uninterrupted printing is achieved.
- the invention further relates to a printer having the features of claim 6.
- This printer implements the above method and also achieves the advantageous already mentioned Effects.
- FIG. 1 shows the structure schematically in a block diagram a high performance printer. It has a printing system 10 as well as several input stations E1, E2, E3, which are to be printed Keep paper in stock. On the output side is that Printing system 10 connected to a removal station 12 with storage compartments.
- the high-performance printer has device control 14, the input stations E1, E2, E3, the printing system 10 and the removal station 12 controls.
- Device controller 14 includes one or more processors for data processing and providing the signals. In remote mode are controlled by a higher-level control system S supplied to the device controller 14.
- This information are according to a standard page description language, for example according to the known page description languages PostScript, PCL5 (Print Control Language Version 5) or IPDS (Intelligent Page Data Stream). she include all image information for one page, positioning information, Paper size, output tray, input tray, etc. As input tray can with the mentioned standard page description languages for a print job only one single input tray among multiple input trays with one Destination address.
- the device controller 14 contains also an interpreter module, which consists of the information S determines the hardware commands required for printing.
- FIG. 2 shows the two connected to the printing system 10 Input stations E1 and E2.
- Each input station E1, E2 has several compartments A, B, C, D, in which single sheets in Form of a stack to be kept in stock.
- Each compartment A to D has a lifting platform H driven by a motor M, which the stack of paper according to the number of one Transport device T cut individual sheets readjusts.
- the peeled single sheets are over a Tray 16 collected and fed to the printer.
- the input station E2 is connected to the Tray 16 connected to the input station E1, which the printer 10 is closest. Via the connecting shaft 20 another input station, e.g. the input station E3, connected become.
- Figure 3 shows the method steps according to the invention in Form a flowchart showing uninterrupted operation enable.
- the Device control 14 whether remote operation is desired i.e. that the print information for the print job is external be generated (step 24). If so, so be it in the subsequent step 26 the print data according to the Standard page description language IPDS adopted.
- the in this data as the destination address, e.g. x, designated input tray becomes a logical device address in the device controller 14 LOG1 assigned, which physically subjects A and B of the input station E1.
- step 32 it is determined which logical Address via the target address of the page description language has been communicated.
- the one shown in Figure 3 the left branch of the procedural steps relates to the destination address, which has been assigned the logical address LOG1 is, the right branch of the procedural steps relates to the logical device address LOG2.
- step 34 it is checked whether the tray A of the input station 1 is ready for the delivery of single sheets. Is this the If (step 36), single sheets are removed from compartment A. If compartment A of input station E1 is not available for delivery of sheet material is ready, e.g. because it is broken or empty is branched to step 38, and there is checked, whether tray B of input station E1 is on standby stands. If this is the case, then in step 40 the compartment B Sheet material taken. Otherwise the program branches to step 42, in which an error message is generated.
- Tray A is not ready to deliver sheet material is, e.g. because it is empty, it immediately becomes subject B branches, from which leaf material is then removed. While this removal from compartment B, compartment A can again with sheet material filled and put on standby.
- To the motor M of the lift H of the compartment A is automatically by the device control so that the lift H from the current unloading position to a loading station moved and after loading back into one Ready position.
- compartment B i.e. if it empty, you can immediately take sheet material from compartment A. and Tray B are refilled with sheet material. On this is an uninterrupted operation guaranteed.
- the logical device address LOG2 assigned, which physically subjects C and D of Designated input station E2.
- FIG. 4 illustrates the assignments made in the method.
- the print information includes the under the date Entry point of the carrier material as the destination address x or y.
- the logical address LOG1 is assigned to the destination address x, the physically the compartments A and B of the input station E1 designated.
- the destination address y leads via the logical address LOG2 to the removal station E2 and compartments C and D.
- any combination of input compartments of the respective Destination address can be assigned.
- assignment data is entered, for example, that the destination address x is the entry point A Input station E1 and input point C of the input station E2 can be assigned.
- a second destination address will be y corresponding to the input point B of the input station E1 and assigned the input point A to the input station E2.
- data is stored in one with the control panel BDF connected, non-volatile memory, e.g. in one Hard disk space HD, secured.
- these are Data transmitted to the device controller 14 of the printer.
- the assignment data between logical device address LOG1, LOG2 and the input points A, B, C, D of the input stations E1, E2 are from the device controller 14 to the micro-controller MC1 reported to the input station E1 and there in stored in a volatile memory RAM1.
- the microcontroller MC1 is both with the input compartments A, B, C, D Input station E1 as well as via an interface 22 a micro controller MC2 connected to the input station E2 to control them. He takes towards the micro controller MC2 a higher-level control function (master-slave) true and any other input stations E3, E4 can also be identical monitor which in turn via an interface 23 to the Microcontrollers MC2 are connected.
- Figure 6 illustrates how print jobs created by a host computer 21 get to the printer, processed become.
- - x LOG1
- y LOG2 can apply.
- x, y, x, x, y results in the logical address sequence LOG1, LOG2, LOG1, LOG1, LOG2.
- This Data sequence arrives in the MC1 microcontroller. If, as in Fig.
- FIG. 6 shows the micro-controller MC1 from the Input station E2 the status message "compartment C full” is present, however, from the input tray A of the input station E1 Status message "empty”, then it controls all LOG1 requests the micro controller MC2, which means that in the Fig. 5 configuration compartment C of the input station E2 driven to deliver a sheet. Against that sheets from Tray B required at LOG2 removed from the input station E1 until it is also empty. Only then will you switch to compartment A of E2.
- any number of Input points are provided by the one Compartments A, B, C, D etc. assigned to the logical device address distributed to any number of input stations E1, E2, E3 etc. become.
- 3 input points (subjects) for a specific type of paper or logical device address this logical device address can be about compartment A of input station E1, compartment D of Input station E2 and compartment B of the input station E3 be assigned.
- the input stations are modular in that they one output path 18 and one input path 20 each exhibit. This makes several input stations easy can be coupled in series and a sheet of paper that from a rear, i.e. further away from the printer input Input station, needed through the front Input stations can be transported to the printer.
- the the higher-level process is controlled by an internal controller, in the input station closest to the printer. It receives a request from the printer for a particular one Paper type, i.e. the one specified by the printer language Entry point and decides which of the physical Input compartments from which input station is selected. He then sends to this input station or directly to the entry point in question receives a withdrawal signal as well all intermediate input stations send a signal to Feed the sheet in the direction of the printer.
- the controller of the first input station E1 therefore takes one Master function true while the following Input stations E2, E3 etc. have a slave function, see above that a cascading arrangement of the entry points is present.
