Aussi bien le terminal de commutation (ET) que la terminaison de ligne (LT) sont connectés sur une interface d'abonné (UNI) d'un réseau ATM (ATMN), via un dispositif (IWF) pour la conversion des données de multiplexage temporel dans des cellules ATM, ou des cellules ATM en données de multiplexage temporel, de sorte que grâce au dispositif précité, un canal ATM virtuel est associé à chaque canal de multiplexage temporel.
