  • This invention relates to diesel fuels and, more particularly, to diesel fuels containing carboxylic acid mixtures.
  • Low sulfur diesel fuel defined as having up to 0.05% by weight sulfur content, has been required by law in the U.S. for on-highway use since October 1993 and in Europe since October 1996. Other nations in the Americas and Asia have timetables in place to follow suit.
  • the driving force to low sulfur diesel fuel is the desire to minimize harmful emissions from diesel vehicles.
  • Diesel fuel sulfur level is reduced by hydrotreatment of various distillate streams at the refinery. Hydrotreatment not only removes sulfur, but also removes other polar compounds and polycyclic aromatic compounds normally present in the diesel fuel. These compounds contribute to the natural lubricity of diesel fuel. When these compounds are removed during the hydrotreatment process, the final low sulfur diesel fuel tends to have poor natural lubricity.
  • Light duty diesel engines are usually fitted with rotary type fuel injection pumps. These pumps are lubricated only by the diesel fuel. Low sulfur fuels having poor natural lubricity have been shown to cause wear in these pumps leading to troublesome operation and premature pump failure. The use of lubricity additives in low sulfur diesel fuels has been shown to reduce or prevent pump wear.
  • Certain types of lubricity additives used in low sulfur diesel fuel have been found to contribute to fuel filter blockage and to pump plunger sticking. Lubricity additives having poor compatibility with engine oil have been shown to cause these problems. Compatibility is defined as the tendency for the diesel fuel containing the lubricity additive to form fuel insoluble deposits, gels, or heavy sticky residues when in contact with engine oil. These deposits, gels or residues have been shown to cause fuel filter blockage and injection pump sticking.

(2) The mixture from step (1) is stored for 7 days at 80°C. (3) The mixture from step (2) is centrifuged for 1 hour at 2000 rpm. Claims (8)

  1. Composition de carburant diesel, comprenant une quantité dominante d'un carburant diesel ayant une température à un point de distillation de 90 % entre 300°C et 390°C, et une petite quantité d'une association :
    (A) d'au moins un premier acide ou anhydride carboxylique à substituant hydrocarbyle, soluble dans l'huile, ou de son ester partiel, dont le substituant hydrocarbyle a jusqu'à 24 atomes de carbone par molécule ; et
    (B) d'au moins un second acide ou anhydride à substituant hydrocarbyle ou de son ester partiel, dont le substituant hydrocarbyle a au moins 30 atomes de carbone par molécule, le constituant (B) répondant à la formule :

    dans laquelle R représente un groupe hydrocarbyle ; et
    la teneur en soufre dudit carburant diesel allant jusqu'à 0,05 % en poids.
  2. Composition suivant la revendication 1, dans laquelle le substituant hydrocarbyle de (A) a 8 à 24 atomes de carbone et le substituant hydrocarbyle de (B) a au moins 40 atomes de carbone.
  3. Composition suivant la revendication 1 ou 2, dans laquelle (A) est au moins un des composés consistant en acide palmitique, acide laurique, acide stéarique, acide oléique, acide myristique, acide linoléique, acide linolénique, acide décénoïque, acide octadécénoïque, acide octadécadiénoïque, acide 2-éthylhexanoïque, acide isooctanoïque, acide isodécanoïque, acide néodécanoïque, acide du tallöl et acide ou anhydride succinique à substituant tétrapropényle.
  4. Composition suivant l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans laquelle (A) est l'acide cis-9-octadécénoïque, l'acide 9,12-octadécadiénoïque ou un de leurs mélanges.
  5. Composition suivant l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans laquelle les constituants (A) et (B) représentent indépendamment un anhydride ou ester partiel.
  6. Composition suivant l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans laquelle le substituant hydrocarbyle du constituant (B) a au moins 40 atomes de carbone.
  7. Composition suivant la revendication 1, dans laquelle R est dérivé d'un polyisobutylène.
  8. Composition suivant la revendication 7, dans laquelle le constituant (B) est au moins un acide succinique à substituant polyisobutylène, le groupe polyisobutylène dudit acide succinique ayant un nombre moyen d'au moins 50 atomes de carbone par molécule.
