Abstract

The fire extinguisher consists of a sealed chamber containing the liquid to be sprayed, a cover (3) with an outlet (21) and control system, and a sealed bottle (66) inside the chamber, containing a propellant gas (64) under pressure to expel the liquid, together with an additive (65) for the liquid. This enables the propellant gas to discharge the additive into the liquid once the contents of the bottle are released. The bottle containing the propellant gas and additive has a plunger tube (88) inside it to ensure that the pressure of the gas expels the additive from the bottle first. The cover is equipped with a handle (56) and perforator (62) to release the contents of the bottle, and a tube with a nozzle for directing the spray.

Description

The present invention relates to a fire extinguisher of the type comprising:
  • a sealed reservoir for a liquid to be sprayed, having an outlet for this liquid leading to ambient air,
  • controlled means for sealing or opening this outlet,
  • a sealed cistern, containing a pressurized gas used as a propellant for the liquid, housed inside the tank and having an outlet for this propellant gas opening inside the tank,
  • a seal for sealing the outlet for the propellant,
  • controlled means for perforating the cover,
  • means for receiving an additive for the liquid to be sprayed, housed inside the tank and suitable for isolating the additive from the liquid to be sprayed as long as the cover has not been perforated and for allowing the mixture of the additive to the liquid to be sprayed, automatically, when the cover has been perforated.

We know many embodiments of a fire extinguisher of this type, in which the means of receipt of the additive consist of a cartridge housed inside the tank under conditions suitable for isolating the additive from the liquid to be sprayed, on the other hand, and pressurized propellant, on the other hand, as long as the lid of the bottle has not been perforated and to communicate the interior of the cartridge with the inside of the cistern after perforation of the cover thereof, so that the propellant pressure comes to apply to inside the additive cartridge. The wall of it is weakened locally, so that it opens under this pressure, a mixture occurs of the additive to the liquid to be sprayed and that it establishes on the mixture a gas pressure tending to expel this mixing through the outlet for the liquid to be sprayed, of way controlled by action of an operator on the means sealing or opening this outlet.

We will refer for example to the British patent No. 1,548,143 and French patents No. 974,326, 2,649,325 and 2,670,389, which describe various embodiments of the cartridge for the additive.

The known means of receiving an additive do not not completely satisfactory. Indeed, their mounting and fitting out means communication with the inside of the cistern, closed by the cover of the latter before perforation and ensuring as gas tight a connection as possible propellant after perforation, complicate manufacturing fire extinguishers and strike their cost price. Moreover, reconditioning the fire extinguisher after use requires multiple and sometimes difficult operations of separate replacement of the cork bottle and the additive cartridge. The periodic control operation fire extinguishers is itself complicated. In also unless you open the cartridge of additive particularly easy at the risk of authorizing accidental openings to the interior of the tank, the way this cartridge opens after its communication with the inside of the bottle hunting has a certain randomness when it is to cause a localized rupture or a unwinding of a flexible area of the wall of the cartridge, and liberates or can liberate parts of this wall, at risk of blocking the outlet for the liquid to be sprayed, when the cartridge opens by expelling a plug or by localized rupture, respectively.

The object of the present invention is to remedy these disadvantages.

To this end, the invention provides a fire extinguisher of the type indicated in the preamble, characterized in that the means of receiving the additive are constituted by the bottle itself, which contains the gas pressure booster and additive without partitioning between them, so that the propellant drives the additive to the liquid to be sprayed, through the outlet for the propellant, when the cover has been perforated.

The fact of housing the additive directly in the cistern, without providing a cartridge additional for this purpose, allows to simplify considerably the realization and the maintenance of fire extinguisher, i.e. to reduce the cost of manufacture and use. In addition, any hazard in the operation of the extinguisher is avoided since, from perforation of the cover, which can be carried out without release of particles likely to clog the outlet for liquid, propellant and additive are expelled to come respectively to put the liquid in pressure and mix with it.

Preferably, the additive is a liquid, which facilitates its complete expulsion and its mixing with the liquid to spray.

The entire expulsion of the additive is in further facilitated, in the case of a fire extinguisher intended for be used in a specific orientation in which the outlet for the propellant is turned upwards, if, according to a preferred embodiment, the bottle of flush has internally a waterproof dip tube of reassembled, tightly connected to the outlet for the propellant and opening down into an area bottom of the cistern, with reference to said orientation.

So, after the perforation of the lid, the gas propellant and additive cannot leave the bottle hunting only by ascending in this dip tube, towards the outlet for the propellant, and the propellant start by driving the additive out of the bottle flush, towards the liquid to be sprayed, before escaping himself from the cistern to put this liquid spraying under pressure; to ensure an eviction as complete as possible of the additive before the gas propellant does not escape from the cistern, we do preferably open the dip tube as low as possible in it.

Expulsion of the additive by pressurized gas after perforation of the seal may be sufficient energetic to ensure good dispersion of the additive in the liquid to be sprayed but you can also provide, according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, that the extinguisher includes means for favor this dispersion.

For example, in the case of a fire extinguisher intended for be used in a specific orientation in which the outlet for the propellant gas is arranged in a upper zone of the tank, these means comprise, at inside the tank but outside the cork bottle, a waterproof dip tube of dispersion, tightly connected to the outlet for the propellant and opening down into the reservoir, preferably within the liquid to be sprayed, with reference to said orientation.

Advantageously, in the case of a fire extinguisher intended to be used in a specific orientation in which the outlet for the liquid to be sprayed is arranged in an upper zone of the tank, the tank has internally, outside the cork bottle, a waterproof ascent tube, tightly connected to the outlet for the liquid to spray and opening down into an area bottom of the tank, preferably as low as possible in this one, with reference to said orientation, to prevent access to the liquid to be sprayed, mixed additive, at the exit planned for him only by ascent to inside this dip tube.

Thus, a fire extinguisher according to the invention can present two mutually juxtaposed dip tubes, one of which is connected to the outlet for the propellant, so as to favor the dispersion of the additive in the liquid to be sprayed after perforation of the lid of the bottle, and the other of which is connected to the outlet for the liquid to be sprayed, to ensure that that gas under pressure causes expulsion as a priority of the mixture of this liquid to be sprayed with the additive, by ascent to the outlet for the liquid to be sprayed, when it is opened under the control of a operator, before he can escape himself from the tank.

The use of a maximum amount of the mixture guaranteed spraying liquid and additive.

The dip tube does not have to be dispersion of the additive opens as low, in the tank, that the ascent tube of the mixture of spray liquid and additive. Preferably, the tube additive dispersion plunger opens inside tank noticeably higher than the dip tube upward movement of the mixture, for example halfway up the liquid to be sprayed, considering the fire extinguisher in said orientation, in order to ensure optimal dispersion additive in the liquid to be sprayed, without risk of direct passage of part of the additive between the tube dispersion plunger and riser tube to the outlet for the liquid to be sprayed.

Preferably, in the case of a fire extinguisher the tank has a liquid filling port at spray and an attached cover, especially removable, on the tank and shutter so sealing the filling opening, the door in solidarity, in particular removable, the bottle of hunting which is dimensioned so as to be able to cross the filling opening.

The possible dip tube intended to promote the dispersion of the additive in the liquid to be sprayed when the cover has been perforated and, when the cover also has the outlet for the liquid to be sprayed and that another dip tube connected to this outlet is designed to encourage maximum use of the mixture liquid spray and additive, this other tube diver are the only components to be engaged by the liquid tank filling port at spray. This allows either to reduce the dimensions of this orifice, that is to increase the dimensions of the cork bottle for a given dimension of this orifice.

Advantageously, the cover carries the means perforation controls, which simplifies considerably the realization of the tank and the maintenance operations.

Other features and advantages of a fire extinguisher according to the invention will emerge from the description below, relating to an example not limiting of realization, as well as attached drawings which form an integral part of this description.

Figure 1 is a view of a fire extinguisher according to the invention, in an orientation corresponding to its orientation of use, partly in elevation lateral and, with regard to the tank, in section along the axis of this tank.

Figure 2 shows, on a larger scale and with burst, the assembly formed in this fire extinguisher by the cover of the tank, the means of perforation, the bottle and outlet for liquid to spray mixed with additive, cut in two planes mutually offset, one of which merges with the plane of section of Figure 1 and the other of which is parallel to the axis of the tank.

Fire extinguisher 1 is produced by assembling two sub-assemblies, namely a tank or body 2, of a part, and of a cover 3 grouping together a certain number of components, on the other hand.

The reservoir 2 has a general form of revolution around an axis 4 which, in an orientation determined to use extinguisher 1, is vertical as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 or form some degrees of angle of inclination from the vertical. This determined orientation of use of the fire extinguisher 1 will serve as a reference after the description.

The reservoir 2 has a side wall 5, a bottom wall 6, to which the wall 5 is connected in a lower zone 7, and a top wall 8, at which the wall 5 is connected in an upper zone 9.

Most of this tank 2 is filled a liquid to be sprayed 10, in particular water with or without anti-freeze, or other liquid, and the upper zone 9 of tank 2 contains air 11 at pressure atmospheric.

La paroi de sommet 8 est percée d'un orifice 12 de remplissage en liquide 10, délimité par un bord circulaire 13, coaxial à l'axe 4.The top wall 8 is pierced with an orifice 12 of filling with liquid 10, delimited by a circular edge 13, coaxial with axis 4.

The cover 3, intended to be attached so removable on the tank 2 to close the orifice 12 with sealing, has a flat circular wall 14 in the flat lower face 17 of which is fitted a annular groove 15. This groove 15 is suitable for receiving the edge 13 and to be applied tightly on it by through a seal (not illustrated). The cover 3 is fixed by a bolting 16 of this cover 3 to the top wall 8.

The face 17 delimits an area 18 extending in the perimeter of the orifice 12.

The upper face 19 of the wall 14 is also flat and includes a boss 20 projecting upwards, forming a body with the wall 14. This boss 20 is pierced, on one side of the axis 4, of a liquid outlet conduit 21 10, having a mouth 22 located in zone 18 and an outlet 23 located in the upper part of the boss 20.

The mouth 22 is delimited by a rim annular 24, centered on an axis 25 which is offset by relative to axis 4 but is parallel to it. She is extends upwards by a cylindrical section 26 coaxial with axis 25, then by a section 27 also cylindrical and coaxial with axis 25, with a diameter slightly lower than that of section 26 so as to set an annular shoulder facing down at the junction of these two sections, then by a section cylindrical 28, leading to outlet 23, coaxial with a axis 29 coplanar with axes 4 and 25, moving away from axis 4 upwards and intersecting from axis 25 at the mutual junction of the two sections 27 and 28.

The mouthpiece 22 receives a straight, tight tube 30, the lower end 31 of which is bevelled and is located in the lower zone 7 of the tank 2, and whose upper end 32 is connected so tight at the edge 24, by fitting in the section 26. The lower end 31 thus bathes with certainty in liquid 10 for a wide range of orientations extinguisher 1, even if there is only a bottom of liquid 10 in this tank 2, so that the tube 30 even ensures in such conditions the ascent of the liquid 10 to the outlet channel 21.

The section 28 of this conduit 21 is tapped and is tightly connected, by a threaded connection 33, to a flexible tube 34 provided with sealing means 35 and opening the tube 34. These means 35 are controlled by a handle 36 and automatically recalled to the position of tight closure of the tube 34, and communicate with a liquid diffusion system 37 10.

In a position offset from that of the conduit 21, the cover 3 is hollowed out with another conduit 38 having a mouth 39 and an outlet 40 located both in zone 18. This mouth 39 and this outlet 40 are delimited respectively by a ledge circular 41, centered on an axis 42 parallel to the axes 25 and 4 but offset from them, and by a ledge circular 43, centered on an axis 44 parallel to the axes 25, 4 and 42 and their common plane but offset from these axes.

From its mouth 39 to its outlet 40, the conduit 38 has a cylindrical section 45 centered on the axis 42, essentially inside the rim 41, a section cylindrical 46 centered on an axis 47, which intersects the axes 42 and 44 and which is ascending from its intersection with axis 42 to its intersection with axis 44, a cylindrical section 48 centered on the axis 44, for the essentials inside the rim 43, and a section cylindrical 49 centered on the axis 44, inside the rim 43, having a diameter slightly greater than that of section 48 so that it forms therewith a annular shoulder facing down.

The section 46 opens into the blind hole formed by the two sections 49 and 48, at the height of the section 48, and in section 45.

Section 45 extends coaxially towards the high, beyond the connection of the section 46, by a bore 50 centered on axis 42, which opens into the open air in the upper face 19. This bore 50 has a diameter lower than that of section 45 and defines with the latter a downward-facing annular shoulder frustoconical narrowing upwards.

The bore 50 receives and guides in sliding a rod 51 comprising a seal 52 which preserves the seal between the duct 38 and the air ambient.

These arms 54 have a handle 56 mounted swivel around an axis 55, allowing to carry extinguisher 1 and putting it into service by perforation, as shown below. This handle 56 is approximately straight and perpendicular to axis 4, and extends in cantilever, from its axis 55, to the opposite of the duct 21 with respect to the axis 4. As long as you do not want to put the extinguisher 1 into service, the handle 56 is retained by a removable pin 58, parallel to axis 55 and bearing down on the arm 54, in a high position illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2. When a user wishes to put the extinguisher 1 in use, it removes the pin 58, which releases the handle 56 towards a downward tilting around of axis 55.

The handle 56 has, above the end 53, a cam surface 57 allowing, during a tilting printed on the handle 56 by the operator, to apply to the rod 51 an effort forcing it to slide down from the high position illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.

Cette surface de came 57 est légèrement espacée de l'extrémité 53 lorsque la poignée 56 est retenue en position haute par la goupille 58.This cam surface 57 is slightly spaced from the end 53 when the handle 56 is retained in high position by pin 58.

Inside the section 45, the rod 51 has a flange 59 respecting, with respect to the shoulder separating the bore 50 and the section 45, a spacing substantially identical to that which separates the end 53 and the cam 57 in said high position of the handle 56.

Vers l'intérieur du tronçon 45, la tige 51 se prolonge coaxialement par une aiguille creuse 60 de diamètre inférieur aux diamètres respectifs de la collerette 59 et du tronçon 45, dont l'extrémité inférieure 61 est biseautée et est située à un niveau intermédiaire entre les niveaux respectifs de l'embouchure 39 et de la jonction du tronçon 46 avec le tronçon 45 lorsque la tige 51 occupe sa position haute ; un orifice 62 de communication entre l'intérieur et l'extérieur de cette aiguille creuse 60 est aménagé immédiatement en dessous de la collerette 59.Towards the interior of the section 45, the rod 51 is extended coaxially by a hollow needle 60 of diameter smaller than the respective diameters of the flange 59 and section 45, the end of which lower 61 is bevelled and is located on a level intermediate between the respective levels of the mouthpiece 39 and the junction of the section 46 with the section 45 when the rod 51 occupies its high position; an orifice 62 of communication between inside and outside of this hollow needle 60 is immediately arranged in below the collar 59.

The rod 50 and the hollow needle 60, which can be made in one piece, constitute a perforator 63 which can be actuated by the handle 56 to release propellant under control pressure 64, for example nitrogen, argon or gas carbonic, intended to expel the liquid 10 from the tank 2, and an additive 65, preferably liquid, such as wetting agent, anti-corrosion agent, so-called agent "AFFF", intended to mix beforehand with the liquid 10 to increase its ability to extinguish a certain type fire or limit damage that could be caused caused by the liquid 10 itself.

This propellant 64 and this additive 65 are contents, without partitioning between them, in only one and same cistern 66, housed inside the tank 2 and connected in leaktight and removable manner to the mouth 39. The section 45 is tapped between the mouth 39 and the connection of the section 46, for allow a screwed mounting of the flush bottle 66.

La paroi 70 se raccorde à un col tubulaire 72, en saillie vers le haut et ouvert par un orifice 73 de sortie du gaz propulseur 64 et de l'additif 65.The hunting bottle 66, in the position which it occupies when it is thus connected to the mouth 39, is centered on the axis 42. It is delimited by a cylindrical side wall 67, having a outer diameter much smaller than the diameter inside the side wall 5 of the tank 2 so as to occupy only a negligible part of the section of it and to be able to be introduced and extracted by the orifice 12, together with the ascent tube 30, when fitting or removing cover 3 on the tank 2. Downward, the wall 67 is connected to a hemispherical bottom wall 68 defining a zone lower 69, while, upwards, it connects to a hemispherical wall of vertex 70 defining a zone upper 71. The wall 70 is connected to a tubular neck 72, projecting upwards and open by an orifice 73 of propellant 64 and additive 65 outlet.

When extinguisher 1 is not in service, the outlet orifice 73 is sealed off by a cover 74, fixed or preferably removable.

The tubular neck 72 is delimited by one face inner 75, an outer face 76 and an upper edge annular plane 77. The face 76 is threaded to receive, by screwing, a cylindrical sleeve 78 having a face cylindrical inner 79 suitably tapped. This face 79 connects upwards, via a planar annular shoulder 80, perpendicular to the axis 42 and turned downwards, to a cylindrical inner face 81 having a diameter smaller than the respective diameters of the face 79 and the section 45 but greater than the diameter outside of needle 60.

Down, at a distance from edge 83 less or equal at the axial distance separating the mutual connection of sections 45 and 46 of the mouth 39, the face 82 is connects to a planar annular shoulder 84, facing high and perpendicular to the axis 42. This shoulder 84 is intended to bear against the rim 41 and to limit thus screwing the sleeve 78 to a position in which the edge 83 remains set back from the connection from section 46 to section 45.

In this position, the shoulder 80 and, with it, the cover 74 occupies a position such as the needle 60 is located above the cover 74, at a certain distance from it, as long as the rod 51 occupies its above-mentioned high position.

The shoulder 84 corresponds to the shoulder 80 and, around the face 79, the sleeve 78 has a face outer device 85 of polygonal section, perpendicular to axis 42, to facilitate the use of a wrench to screw or unscrew the sleeve 78 compared to the rim 41 or the cork bottle 66; downwards, this face 85 is connected to face 79 by a lower annular edge 86 plane, perpendicular to axis 42.

A straight dip tube 87 is fitted with tightly inside the section 49. The end bottom of this tube 87 is preferably located above the lower end 31 of the tube 30 but at within the liquid 10, for example halfway up this latest. In addition, a sealed dip tube 88 is provided at inside the cistern 66. The end upper 89 of this tube 88 is tightly connected on the face 75 of the neck 72, for example by fitting to force, and the lower end 90 of this tube 88, by example cut at a bevel, is located in the area lower 69 of the hunting bottle 66 in order to dive in addendum 65.

The use of the extinguisher is carried out from the next way.

The handle 56 being immobilized in its position high by the pin 58 and the rod 51 being itself in high position, the cover 74 is intact and closed so tightens the hunting bottle 66; any communication is also closed between the tube 34 and the diffusion 37, by the sealing means 35.

After removing the pin 58, the operator holds extinguisher 1 in the position illustrated in the figures or in a close position and prints to the handle 56 a tilting down, which causes cam 57 to press against end 53 and cause sliding of the rod 51 downwards, with needle 60 in contact with the cover 74 then perforation of the latter, which releases pressurized gas 64 and additive 65 contained in the hunting bottle 66. The size of the needle 60, along the axis 42, from the flange 59 is suitably chosen so that the perforation of the cover 74 can occur completely and for that it still remains after this perforation, between the edge 83 and the flange 59, sufficient passage for the gas 64 and additive 65.

The interior of the bottle 66 is thus put in communication with the conduit 38 and, by through it, the hollow needle 60 and orifice 62, with the rest of the tank 2.

The propellant 64 causes the expulsion of the additive 65, which rises through the dip tube 88, runs through the conduit 38, descends through the tube 87, and reaches the liquid 10 with which it mixes; the gas 64 itself, following the same course, then spreads to inside the tank 2 to pressurize the mixture of liquid 10 and additive 65.

This mixture of the liquid 10 with the additive 65 is facilitated by tube 87. Although additive 65 and gas propellant 64 tend to collect respectively in the lower area 69 and in the upper area of the bottle 66, as shown in Figure 2, the practically total expulsion of the additive 65 out of the bottle 66 before the propellant 64 does escapes is ensured by the tube 88.

The operator can then, by action on the handle 36, release the mixture of liquid 10 as desired and of additive 65, which rises through the tube 30 under pressure gas 64 and escapes, in a controlled manner by action of the handle 36, by the diffusion system 37 which ensures the dispersion.

Fire extinguisher 1, when empty or practically empty liquid vacuum 10, can be refilled by dismantling the cover 3, filling with liquid 10 through orifice 12, replacement of the hunting bottle 66 and the cover 74, and reassembly of the cover 3 thus re-equipped.

By way of nonlimiting example, for a volume of six or nine liters of water as a liquid 10 to spray contained in tank 2, and for a volume of 90 cm3 of additive 65 in the liquid state, it is possible to use as propellant 64 60 g of carbon dioxide or 150 g nitrogen, respectively giving the bottle of flushes 66 a volume of 200 cm3 or 266 cm3.

The cover 74 is chosen so as to be able to be easily punctured by needle 60, but this seal and its fixation are chosen so as to resist the overpressure prevailing inside the bottle of flush 66 in comparison with the interior of tank 2 before perforation under normal storage conditions fire extinguisher; in addition, the cover 74 is of preferably turned to break in priority, that is to say preferentially to the flush bottle 66, in case of abnormally high overpressure therein, so to avoid an explosion of the bottle 66 in such a case.

Dans ce deuxième cas, la bouteille de chasse 66 pourrait alors être vissée directement à l'intérieur du tronçon 45.It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described above as example but that it embraces, on the contrary, all variant embodiments as defined in the claims. So, operculum 74 could be fixed securely inside the sleeve 78, or at pass 72. In this second case, the bottle 66 could then be screwed directly inside section 45.
