Definitions

  • the invention relates to the construction of printing devices and in particular, but not exclusively, to the construction of label (tape) printing devices.
  • tape printing devices which have a keyboard for entering data for defining an image to be printed, a display for assisting a user in entering the image and a printing mechanism for printing the image on a tape-shaped recording medium.
  • the tape printing device includes a cassette accommodating space that accommodates a cassette containing at least the tape-shaped recording medium.
  • the cassette may further contain a thermal ink ribbon which is overlapped with the recording medium through a printing zone defined by a printing mechanism.
  • the printing mechanism includes a rotatable platen and thermal head that cooperate to print an image.
  • the image is created by selective activation of printing elements of the printhead so that they are heated and selectively cause ink to transfer from the thermal ink ribbon to the recording medium supported by the platen.
  • the rotation of the platen causes the recording medium to move through the print zone so that images are successively printed on a line basis by the print head onto the recording medium moving through the print zone.
  • a cutting device is provided for cutting off a section of the tape.
  • the known tape printing devices have cassette support pins in their cassette receiving space for supporting a cassette, so that the tape-shaped recording medium is held at a predetermined position relative to the printing mechanism in order to be able to print the image exactly on the medium.
  • the cassette receiving space further contains other localizing and supporting components, in particular for fixing the position and for supporting the print head and the print roller.
  • a flat steel plate is made that contains a plurality of openings into which pins are inserted. Some of these pens are also made of steel and made separately. Some pens, such as the cartridge carrier pens, can be plastic. The pins must be inserted into the openings in a separate operation.
  • Such a method is not only difficult to automate, but whether it is carried out automatically or manually, it often results in pins that are not perpendicular to the flat steel plate or parallel to one another. This means that it is difficult to maintain the position of the printhead relative to the tape-shaped recording medium in the cartridge within acceptable limits.
  • the one-piece element can be made by any suitable process, but it is particularly advantageous to produce it by (zinc) die casting.
  • die casting is the best solution because the element being manufactured is inexpensive, relatively strong and accurate in size, injection molding is also an option.
  • the one-piece baseplate of the present invention replaces a variety of different, separate parts used in known constructions.
  • the cost of the one-piece printing plate is about a third of the price of the parts it replaces.
  • the production of the base plate can be automated without any loss of accuracy.
  • Using a single molding step means that the dimensions of protruding components do not vary from one base plate to the next.
  • the protruding components can be more straightforward.
  • the one-piece member may also provide a cutter attachment for a cutter. This avoids the need to manufacture a separate cutter attachment component and reduces the complexity of the cutter so that more important functions such as cutting blade alignment can be more precisely controlled.
  • the tape printing device may comprise a bottom of the cassette receiving space, which is arranged on the gear pins and extends above the gears of the transmission, the bottom of the cassette receiving space being fastened to the base plate to hold the gears in place.
  • the printhead is movable between an operating position in which it interacts with the platen to print an image on the recording medium and an inoperative position.
  • the printhead support member may include a simple hub to which a printhead support is rotatably attached.
  • a simple handle or lever can cause the print head carrier that carries the print head to move.
  • printing roller can be moved between an operating position and a non-operating position while the print head is stationary.
  • both the print head and the print roller are movably mounted.
  • a motor is provided for the rotary drive of the printing roller about a first axis, that the motor rotates about a second axis which is orthogonal to the first axis Level lies, and that the rotation of the motor about the second axis is converted by means of at least one bevel gear into a rotation about the first axis for driving the printing roller.
  • the motor drives a bevel gear which converts the axis of rotation of the motor into an axis perpendicular thereto for driving the pressure roller, it is possible to fit a motor with a longer body into the dimensions of the cassette receiving space. This enables a cheaper motor to be used.
  • Figure 1 illustrates the essential components for operation, which are arranged in the region of the cassette receiving space of a tape printing device.
  • the reference numeral 2 refers to a base plate on which the components essential for operation are fastened.
  • the base plate 2 differs from conventional base plates in that it is produced as a one-piece unit, as will be described in more detail below.
  • the base plate 2 has a flat base part and a multiplicity of protruding pins (shown in FIG. 2) for carrying the components essential for the operation.
  • a rotatable pressure roller 4 is fastened to a pressure roller support pin, which is visible in FIG. 2 and bears the reference number 6.
  • a pressure roller gear 8 is also rotatably mounted relative to the pressure roller pin 6 and fixed to the pressure roller 4, so that rotation of the pressure roller gear 8 causes rotation of the pressure roller 4 around the pressure roller pin 6.
  • a printhead holder 10 is attached to a printhead support arm 12, which in turn is rotatably supported on a hub 14 (FIG. 2).
  • the print head support arm 12 is movable in the direction of arrow A.
  • a printhead (not shown) is held in the printhead holder 10 during operation, the printhead having a number of selectively activatable printheads for printing an image.
  • the print head support arm 12 is movable so that the print head can either be moved into an operating position in which the print head is pressed towards the printing roller 4 and into an inoperative position in which it is spaced from the printing roller 4.
  • the pressure roller gear wheel 8 is driven by a first plate-shaped gear wheel 16 of a transmission, which consists of a total of five gear wheels 16, 18, 20, 22, 24.
  • the gears of the transmission are held by transmission pins 26, 28, 30, 32 and 34, respectively ( Figure 2).
  • the last gear 24 of the transmission is driven by a horizontally oriented bevel gear 36.
  • the horizontally oriented bevel gear 36 is arranged on a motor mounting plate 38.
  • the motor support plate also carries an electric motor 40, which is preferably a DC motor, but may also be a stepper motor in some applications.
  • the motor is arranged in the longitudinal direction relative to the motor support plate 38, so that the plane of rotation is perpendicular to the plane of the base plate.
  • the motor drives a bevel gear 42, which is driven in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the horizontally arranged bevel gear 36.
  • the rotation of the bevel gear 36 drives the last plate-shaped gear 24 of the transmission and causes the rotation of the pressure roller 4.
  • the pressure roller 4 rotates about an axis running perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the motor 40.
  • An ink ribbon drive shaft 43 is attached to an ink ribbon shaft support pin 44 ( Figure 2).
  • a ribbon drive gear 46 attached to the ribbon drive shaft 44 is attached to the ribbon shaft support pin 44.
  • the second gear 18 in the gearbox causes the ribbon drive gear 46 and thus the ribbon drive shaft 43 to rotate.
  • the function of the ribbon drive shaft 43 will be explained in more detail later.
  • the base plate 2 also provides first and second cassette support pins 48, 50.
  • Base plate 2 also includes a cassette carrier / alignment pin 52.
  • the bare base plate 2 is shown in Figure 2. It is manufactured as a single, one-piece element by zinc die casting or by plastic casting technology.
  • the base plate is produced by injection molding, in which the various pins protruding from the flat metal base plate are melted onto it in a single casting step.
  • the base plate 2 is mounted on the underside of the housing part which defines the cassette receiving space of the tape printing device.
  • This housing part is provided by a plastic part, which is a bottom of the cassette receiving space Are defined.
  • a part of this casting is shown in Figure 3.
  • the bottom of the cassette accommodating space is represented by reference number 70.
  • the housing part also contains a wall 72 for the motor 40.
  • the base plate 2 is fastened to the underside of the bottom 70 of the cassette receiving space by screws or other suitable means.
  • the bottom of the cassette receiving space thus extends over the gears 16 to 24 of the transmission, and over the horizontally oriented bevel gear 36.
  • the first and second cassette carrier pins 48, 50, the ribbon drive shaft 43, the platen roller 4 and the printhead holder 10 penetrate the bottom 70 of the cassette receiving space .
  • the gears 16 to 24 of the transmission are enclosed between the base plate 2 and the housing part. This eliminates the need for snap rings and retaining pins that would normally be needed to secure the gears to their respective pins
  • FIG. 4 shows the base plate 2 with a cassette 56 positioned thereon.
  • the cassette 56 is a plastic housing which contains a supply of ink ribbon which extends from a supply spool within the cassette 56 through a printing zone 58, which is defined by the printing roller 4 and the print head in the print head holder 10, except for a take-up spool inside the cassette 56 extends.
  • the take-up spool can be driven by the ribbon drive shaft 43 to tighten the ribbon.
  • the cassette also contains a supply of image receiving tape (recording medium) 62 which extends from a supply spool within the cassette 56 in overlap with the ink ribbon through the print zone 58 and then through an exit portion 60 out of the cassette 56.
  • the image receiving tape is identified by reference numeral 62 and includes an upper layer for receiving a printed image and a back layer attached to the upper layer by an adhesive layer.
  • the backing layer can be peeled off, creating a label so that portions of the top layer can be glued to surfaces such as books or staplers.
  • the cassette 56 has two small recesses on its underside, each of which receives the first and second cassette carrier pins 48, 50.
  • the cartridge 56 also has a through hole 63 to locate the cartridge 56 on the cartridge carrier / alignment pin 52. The cassette 56 is thus precisely positioned and aligned with respect to the base plate 2. It does not rest on the housing part as such, but is spaced apart from it by the cassette carrier pins 48, 50.
  • this label printing device comprises data input means, for example a keyboard, for inputting data to be printed.
  • a microprocessor controls the operation of the printing device in accordance with the data entered into the keyboard.
  • a display shows data entered with the keyboard to assist the user in building a label to be printed.
  • the thermal printhead includes a series of printing elements that extend along the width of the image receiving tape 62. The printing elements are printed out on a line basis by the controller in accordance with the data to be printed.
  • the platen roller 4 is rotated and this rotation requires that the image receiving belt 62 move in the direction of arrow B, so that the image receiving belt 62 has moved between the printing of the individual lines into an adjacent printing position. In this way, an image is formed on the image receiving belt 62.
  • a cutter is actuated to cut off the printed portion of the image receiving tape 62 and provide a label.
  • the one-piece baseplate described here ensures this by providing accurate positioning of the cassette 56 and thus the image receiving tape 62 with respect to the printhead.
