- the cassette receiving space further contains other localizing and supporting components, in particular for fixing the position and for supporting the print head and the print roller.
- a flat steel plate is made that contains a plurality of openings into which pins are inserted. Some of these pens are also made of steel and made separately. Some pens, such as the cartridge carrier pens, can be plastic. The pins must be inserted into the openings in a separate operation.
- Such a method is not only difficult to automate, but whether it is carried out automatically or manually, it often results in pins that are not perpendicular to the flat steel plate or parallel to one another. This means that it is difficult to maintain the position of the printhead relative to the tape-shaped recording medium in the cartridge within acceptable limits.

- the production of the base plate can be automated without any loss of accuracy.

- the one-piece member may also provide a cutter attachment for a cutter. This avoids the need to manufacture a separate cutter attachment component and reduces the complexity of the cutter so that more important functions such as cutting blade alignment can be more precisely controlled.
- the tape printing device may comprise a bottom of the cassette receiving space, which is arranged on the gear pins and extends above the gears of the transmission, the bottom of the cassette receiving space being fastened to the base plate to hold the gears in place.
- the printhead is movable between an operating position in which it interacts with the platen to print an image on the recording medium and an inoperative position.
- the printhead support member may include a simple hub to which a printhead support is rotatably attached.
- a simple handle or lever can cause the print head carrier that carries the print head to move.

- a printhead holder 10 is attached to a printhead support arm 12, which in turn is rotatably supported on a hub 14 (FIG. 2).

- the base plate 2 is mounted on the underside of the housing part which defines the cassette receiving space of the tape printing device.

- the gears 16 to 24 of the transmission are enclosed between the base plate 2 and the housing part. This eliminates the need for snap rings and retaining pins that would normally be needed to secure the gears to their respective pins

- the cassette 56 is a plastic housing which contains a supply of ink ribbon which extends from a supply spool within the cassette 56 through a printing zone 58, which is defined by the printing roller 4 and the print head in the print head holder 10, except for a take-up spool inside the cassette 56 extends.
- the take-up spool can be driven by the ribbon drive shaft 43 to tighten the ribbon.
- the cassette also contains a supply of image receiving tape (recording medium) 62 which extends from a supply spool within the cassette 56 in overlap with the ink ribbon through the print zone 58 and then through an exit portion 60 out of the cassette 56.
- the image receiving tape is identified by reference numeral 62 and includes an upper layer for receiving a printed image and a back layer attached to the upper layer by an adhesive layer.
- the backing layer can be peeled off, creating a label so that portions of the top layer can be glued to surfaces such as books or staplers.
- the cassette 56 has two small recesses on its underside, each of which receives the first and second cassette carrier pins 48, 50.
- the cartridge 56 also has a through hole 63 to locate the cartridge 56 on the cartridge carrier / alignment pin 52. The cassette 56 is thus precisely positioned and aligned with respect to the base plate 2. It does not rest on the housing part as such, but is spaced apart from it by the cassette carrier pins 48, 50.
- this label printing device comprises data input means, for example a keyboard, for inputting data to be printed.
- a microprocessor controls the operation of the printing device in accordance with the data entered into the keyboard.
- a display shows data entered with the keyboard to assist the user in building a label to be printed.
- the thermal printhead includes a series of printing elements that extend along the width of the image receiving tape 62. The printing elements are printed out on a line basis by the controller in accordance with the data to be printed.
- the platen roller 4 is rotated and this rotation requires that the image receiving belt 62 move in the direction of arrow B, so that the image receiving belt 62 has moved between the printing of the individual lines into an adjacent printing position. In this way, an image is formed on the image receiving belt 62.
- a cutter is actuated to cut off the printed portion of the image receiving tape 62 and provide a label.
- the one-piece baseplate described here ensures this by providing accurate positioning of the cassette 56 and thus the image receiving tape 62 with respect to the printhead.
