Dies wird dadurch ermöglicht, daß im Fahrzeug jeweils eine Abrechnungseinrichtung mitgeführt wird, die von einem Wertguthaben, das auf einem mobilen Guthabenspeicher (z.B. Chipkarte) geführt ist und im voraus vom Fahrer an einer beliebigen Zahlstelle (z.B. Chipkartenautomat) käuflich erworben wurde, fortlaufend die jeweilige Gebühr entsprechend dem geltenden Tarif für den gerade benutzten Streckenabschnitt abbucht. Hierzu sind Tarifinformationen auf einer Speichereinheit der Einrichtung verfügbar. Um die Abrechnungseinrichtung mit den Informationen zu versorgen, die zu einer Erkennung des gerade benutzten gebührenpflichtigen Streckenabschnitts erforderlich sind, verfügt sie über ein Empfangssystem, mit dem z.B. von einem Satellitennavigationssystem oder einem Funkpeilsystem Informationen empfangen werden können, die der aktuellen geographischen Position des Fahrzeugs entsprechen oder diese mit Hilfe einer Recheneinheit der Einrichtung errechenbar machen. Weiterhin verfügt die Abrechnungseinrichtung über eine Speichereinheit, in der die geographischen Daten sogenannter Identifikationspunkte gespeichert sind, die eine eindeutige Identifizierung der einzelnen gebührenpflichtigen Wegstrecken des Streckennetzes ermöglichen.
