- the main function of wrapping techniques by wrapping is to give a load formed by a stack the cohesion necessary to preserve the stability of the stack during its handling.
- the means used to ensure this cohesion is a stretch film which is wound in the stretched state around the stack under a certain tension, low, the film tending to shrink slightly and to be pressed on the load. In general, at least two winding layers are produced.
- the film supply station includes a film reel associated with a pre-stretching device and is movable vertically along its support (if the axis of the load is vertical) in order to be able to sweep the whole of the load height by helical winding.
- the present invention intends to propose a simple device for performing these functions at the start and end of the wrapping cycle, further making it possible to improve the quality of the finish of the packaging and the speed of execution of the cycle start and end operations.
- the subject of the invention is, in a wrapping machine for wrapping a load comprising a device for supplying a pre-stretched film, animated with respect to a longitudinal axis of the load to be packed with a relative helical movement, a device for handling the free end of the film between two wrapping cycles which comprises a support plate for the film against the load, the length of which is at least equal to the width of the film used and, near one of the long edges of this plate, a pair of jaws movable relative to each other along this edge to crease and pinch between them the portion of film between the plate applied to the load and the film supply device.
- the second advantage of this provision is in the possibility of stopping the wrapping anywhere on the external surface of the load. Indeed, in current machines, the wrapping stops most often in the low position, after having passed the film during the last turn, in a clamp fixed relative to the load with which it can be maintained after cutting.
- Another advantage of this arrangement lies in the fact that the film when it is caught between the jaws, is shaped into a wick which withstands the tensile forces which must be printed on the film, in particular at the start of each cycle of wrapping, which allows to go up quickly in speed without fear of a rupture of the film.
- the plate and the jaws are mounted at the end of a movable support perpendicular to the axis of the load.
- the support can be moved along a stationary guide parallel to the axis of the load.
- the device further comprises a clamp fixed relative to the load located at one of its longitudinal ends, the location of which is, at the end of the wrapping cycle, located between the film supply device and the clamping jaws of the film, in the vicinity of the path of these jaws during the operation of the support relative to the load.
- a load 1 here in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped resting by its lower face 2 on a support not shown in a machine which comprises a device for supplying a pre-stretched wrapping film 3 , this device here being simply represented by a coil 4 and a support 5 for the coil 4.
- the machine of the invention comprises a fixed frame, a part 7 of which constitutes a slide for a carriage 8 for supporting a foldable arm 9 for a plate 10 intended to support the film 3 against the load 2 at the end of wrapping.
- the plate 10 is associated by a connection symbolized at 11 with a set of slides 12 for movable jaws 13 and 14 along the set of slides 12 which is parallel to one of the edges 10a of the plate 10.
- the set of slides 12 therefore the jaws 13 and 14 are located between the plate 10, in the immediate vicinity thereof, and the film supply device 3.
- the upper jaw 14 is further equipped with a stirrup 15 in the direction of the film supply device, this stirrup extending above the plane of the jaw 14 and having at its free end substantially in the plane of the jaw 14 , a finger 16, the function of which will be explained below.
- the load 1 When the wrapping is finished, the load 1 has its face opposite the frame part 7.
- the automatic control of the machine adjusts the height of the carriage 8 and unfolds the arm 9 so that the plate 10 comes to bear on the face la by pressing the film 3 on this face la as illustrated by the arrow A.

- the plate 10 may be a heat-sealing heat-sealing plate for the last turn of the film on the load.
- the crumpled film held between the jaws 13 and 14 therefore forms a sort of wick which remains assembled in a section 17 outside the jaws by means of the finger 16 as illustrated in FIG. 3.
- the base of the reel 4 is located substantially at the level of the finger 16 and the jaws 13 and 14 so that the finger 16 forces the film to gather along its lower edge which forms the wick part 17 between this finger and the jaws 13,14.
- FIGs 1 to 5 We have noticed in Figures 1 to 5 the presence of a clamp 18 which is carried by a support not shown integral with or coupled to the support of the load 1.
- This clamp 18 comprises two plates 19 and 20 capable of being separated and brought closer vertically from each other. These plates form jaws for this clamp which is situated substantially at the level of the lower face 2 of the load by which the latter rests on its support.
- the mechanism for controlling the opening and closing of the clamp 18 is conventional and will not be described.
- the clamp 18 is on the side of the face 1a of the load when the latter is stopped and between this face and the frame part 7 which carries the carriage 8.
- the automatic control of the machine which has carried out the descent according to arrows C, D and E of all the moving equipment described above is such that at the end of movement, as shown in FIG. 3, the section 17 of film shaped like a wick is located just opposite the two jaws 19 and 20 of the clamp 18 open.
- a movement according to arrow F in FIG. 4 of the plate 10 in the direction of the carriage 8 introduces the part 17 of film in the form of a wick between the two jaws 19 and 20.
- a detection of the presence of the film between them or a detection of the position of the moving element in this intermediate position makes it possible to control the closing of the clamp on the film.
- the jaws 13 and 14 can open and move away from one another along the slides 12, the retraction of the deformable arm 9 can continue until the configuration of the machine is obtained shown in Figure 5.
- the wrapped load can then be removed from the machine and a new load to be wrapped can be brought there.
- the clamp 18 keeps the film 3 in position such that a relative movement of the load relative to the device for supplying the film causes the wrapping of the load to start.
- the clamp 18 opens and the part of film which extends between the clamp 18 and the load 1 is released.
- it may be advantageous to provide a vertical air blowing under the load which has the effect of raising this part of film released against the charge so that the next turns keep it there.
- the clamp 18 is retractable between a high level or it is in the service position, that is to say capable of intercepting the film in the form of section of wick 17 and a low level located under the lower surface 2 of the load where it is retracted to allow for example the making of a very low turn to cover the lower edges of the load.
- this table may include one or more other clamps 18 opposite each of the lateral faces of the load, which would make it possible to stop the wrapping opposite any which side and this depending on the position of the feed conveyors or load evacuation on the turntable. If the clamp 18 is not retractably mounted relative to the lower surface of the load, the number of clamps 18 should be limited to two arranged opposite two adjacent faces of the load to leave two access sides free and discharge of the load in front of these clamps.
- FIG. 6 is the illustration of an industrial embodiment of a machine according to the invention, in which the load 1 rests on a turntable 21 while the device for supplying the film 3 and the carriage supporting the unfoldable arm, the plate 10 and the jaws 13 and 14 are mounted to slide vertically along a mast 22 secured to the frame of the machine.
