Abstract

The electrical connection terminal is of the type including a fixed jaw (4) in the form of a cradle with a U-shaped cross-section which serves as receptacle for the ends of cables (2, 2'), and a movable jaw (5) associated with a clamping system (6) of the screw-nut type, positioned in the opening of the said cradle (4), between its side branches (16 and 17), and in which the nut of the clamping system interacts with the ends of the side branches of the said cradle via a system of the dovetail type in order to bear on the said ends so as to reinforce the clamping and prevent the said branches moving apart. According to the invention, this terminal includes means which, on the one hand, make it possible to move the movable jaw (5) and its clamping system (6), preferably in the form of a slider (24), in order to clear the opening (15) of the cradle (4) and to make it possible to insert and fix the ends of cables (2, 2') in the bottom of the fixed jaw (4), perpendicularly to their longitudinal axis (23), and, on the other hand, to hold the said movable jaw (5) linked to the terminal so as to make it impossible to lose it. <IMAGE>

Description

The present invention relates to an electrical connection terminal for clamping two ends of previously stripped cables. This terminal is preferably of the type comprising a fixed jaw in the form of a U-section cradle which serves as a receptacle for the cable ends, and a movable jaw associated with a clamping system of the screw-nut type positioned in the opening of the cradle, between its lateral branches. The nut of the clamping system cooperates with the ends of the lateral branches of the cradle by a system of the dovetail type. This dovetail-shaped system makes it possible to reinforce the tightening and it avoids the separation of the lateral branches of the cradle during the tightening of the cables.

This type of terminal is for example used for the connection of the electric cables supplying the candelabra.

The mounting of the cables on current connection systems requires a bending of the end of said cables to allow their introduction into the fixed jaw. This operation is not very easy to carry out, in particular when handling cables of large diameter, relatively rigid.

Document FR-A-2 312 129 describes a connection terminal of the same type, in which the mobile jaw can be separated from the fixed jaw. In this type of structure, the movable jaw is not permanently linked to the terminal and the operator can drop it or even lose it during improper handling.

To overcome these drawbacks, the electrical connection terminal according to the invention, of the above type, comprises means which allow on the one hand, to move the movable jaw and its clamping system, to clear the opening of the cradle and make it possible to introduce and lay the ends of cables in the bottom of the fixed jaw, and on the other hand, to maintain said movable jaw linked to the terminal for the make it captive. To this end, this terminal consists of an insulating support in the form of a box, in which the fixed jaw is positioned; this housing is provided with a slide system for guiding a slide carrying the movable jaw and its clamping system, which slide is closed at its ends to make captive said slide.

The movable jaw and its clamping system are thus carried by a sort of drawer which can very easily be handled by an operator. The movable jaw can thus be very largely released by simple translation to allow the passage and introduction of the cable ends into the fixed jaw. The repositioning of said movable jaw on the fixed jaw to clamp and connect the cable ends is carried out by a reverse translation operation. The peripheral box also makes it possible to isolate the various parts from the external environment, in particular to comply with the laws and standards in force.

The fixed jaw, made of brass for example, is preferably housed in the open face of the housing, facing the cables to be connected. The insulating housing has a generally parallelepiped shape; it is preferably made up of two half-shells assembled by clips with clips and crimped hot or by a technique of welding by high frequency or ultrasound.

According to another arrangement of the invention, the insulating housing has lateral cheeks which extend the open face at the level of which the fixed jaw is housed. This feature protects access to the cable ends and the fixed jaw.

According to another characteristic, the movable slide consists of a flat base provided with a hole for the passage of the clamping screw. This base is extended, on one side, by a protective chimney of the upper end of the clamping screw and, on the other side, by two lateral cheeks provided with hooks, on which the corresponding nut is fixed, by simple click for example.

According to another arrangement, the lateral edges of the base of the slide are guided in longitudinal grooves which form slides and which extend parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cables. These grooves are made at the front face of the housing, the slide is trapped in these grooves.

In addition, the base of the slide is advantageously provided with lateral pins arranged to penetrate into slots provided in the extension of the longitudinal grooves of the housing. These tenons may include hooks which, cooperating with the slots, allow the slide to be locked on the opening of the fixed jaw, in the cable tightening position.

On the other hand, the longitudinal guide grooves of the slide are preferably adapted to tighten the latter slightly by force, when it is released from the fixed jaw. One can also provide a simple boss or lug, in the groove, to immobilize the slide. These characteristics make it possible to maintain the slide in the "release" position without requiring any maintenance by the operator.

According to another arrangement of the invention, the movable jaw consists of a conductive pad, made of brass for example, mounted movably at the end of the clamping screw. This pellet is guided in the fixed jaw by median grooves in the form of arcs of a circle produced on the internal faces of its lateral branches.

According to other provisions, the nut of the tightening system has an orifice intended for the reception of a bypass plug which feeds the circuit breaker and the terminal may include means for fixing a connecting bar, possibly in comb shape, used to connect two or more connection terminals.

  • la figure 1 est une vue éclatée de la borne de connexion électrique selon l'invention avec le mors mobile en position "dégagement" ;
  • la figure 2 est une vue en coupe transversale montrant le mors mobile en position de serrage sur le mors fixe ;
  • la figure 3 est une vue de l'écrou de serrage du mors mobile monté sur le coulisseau support ;
But the invention will be further illustrated, without being in no way limited by the following description of a particular embodiment, given by way of example and shown in. annexed drawings in which:
  • Figure 1 is an exploded view of the electrical connection terminal according to the invention with the movable jaw in the "release"position;
  • Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view showing the movable jaw in the clamping position on the fixed jaw;
  • Figure 3 is a view of the clamping nut of the movable jaw mounted on the support slide;
  • Figure 4 is an isolated view of the movable jaw, its clamping system and the support slide, in association with a bypass plug to the circuit breaker.

Terminal 1, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, for the electrical connection of the ends of cables 2, 2 ′, consists mainly of an insulating housing 3 made of suitable plastic, of a fixed jaw 4 in the form of a cradle U-shaped section and a movable jaw 5 associated with a tightening system 6 of the screw-nut type.

The fixed jaw 4 and the movable jaw 5 are made of conductive material, of the brass type for example; they define a clamping vice to crush and bring into contact the ends of the cables 2, 2 'to be connected.

The insulating housing 3 has a generally parallelepiped shape consisting of two side walls 7 and 8, of a front face 9, of a rear face 10, of a bottom face 11 and of an upper face 12. It consists of two symmetrical half-shells assembled by means of pins 13 suitably distributed which cooperate with adapted orifices 14. This assembly is advantageously supplemented by hot crimping, by high frequency welding or by ultrasound.

The underside 11 of the housing 3 is located opposite the cables 2, 2 'to be connected; she is open and she comprises a housing for receiving and positioning the fixed jaw 4 in the form of a cradle. This fixed jaw 4 is positioned so that its opening 15 is oriented towards the front face 9 of the insulating housing. Its two lateral wings 16 and 17 are respectively pressed against the internal faces of the lateral walls 7 and 8 of the housing and its bottom 18 comes to bear on the rear face 10. Note in FIG. 1 the presence of median grooves 20 made on the internal faces of the lateral wings of the cradle 4; as will be seen below, these grooves 20 allow the mobile jaw 5 to be guided when the vice is tightened. In addition, the end of the lateral wings 16 and 17 of the cradle 4 has an internal return 21 in the form of a half dovetail, the function of which will be explained below.

The front face 9 of the housing 3 is open and has longitudinal grooves 22 oriented inward. These grooves 22 extend over the entire length of the housing, just above the opening 15 of the cradle 4 and parallel to the longitudinal axis 23 of the cables 2, 2 'to be connected. The grooves 22, facing each other, serve as slides for guiding a slide 24 carrying the movable jaw 5 and its clamping system 6. This slide 24 is trapped in the grooves 22; it is made in one piece from a suitable plastic material. It consists of a flat base 25 of generally substantially rectangular shape provided with a central orifice 26 for the passage of the screw 27 which is part of the tightening system 6. This base 25 is extended, upwards, by a wall protective chimney 28 intended to protect and isolate the screw 27 in all its positions. Laterally, the base 25 is extended downwards (FIG. 3) by two cheeks 29 each comprising a locking lug 30 at its end. The two facing cheeks 29 allow the latching and the maintenance in position of the nut 31 which cooperates with the screw 27 to form the tightening system 6.

This nut 31 has a threaded orifice in its central part into which the clamping screw 27 is threaded. The external end of this screw 27 is located in the protective chimney 28 and it can be operated by an operator by means of a key for example. Its internal end carries the movable jaw 5 in the form of a conducting pad. This pad 5 is rotatably mounted at the end of the screw 27, to improve the tightening of the cables to be connected.

The slide 24 which carries the movable jaw 5 and its clamping system 6 can slide over the entire length of the front face 9 of the housing 3. This sliding is carried out by the operator so as to clear the opening 15 of the cradle 4 and allow the introduction and installation of the cable ends 2, 2 ', in the bottom of the fixed jaw 4, and this perpendicular to their longitudinal axis 23, along the orientation arrow 32. This particular positioning does not require significant bending of the cables and it greatly facilitates the connection of rigid cables whose section is of the order of 50 mm 2 for example, of the type of those used for supplying a network of lighting candelabra.

The base 25 of the slide 24 serves as a spacer and maintains the spacing of the side walls 7 and 8 of the insulating housing. In the "release" position, the slide is largely pushed towards the upper face 12 of the housing. At this upper part, the longitudinal grooves 22 are adapted to tighten and wedge the slider 24 in order to prevent it from falling back during the cable placement operation. This slight tightening keeps the fixed jaw 5 in the released position and the operator can dispense with maintaining it in any way.

This holding in the released position can also be obtained by a simple boss arranged in the groove.

When the stripped ends of the cables 2 and 2 'are positioned between the lateral wings 16 and 17 of the cradle 4, on the bottom 18 of the latter, the slide 24 is lowered manually, by simple translation, to position the movable jaw 5 and its clamping system 6 in the opening 15 of the fixed jaw 4. This clamping position is advantageously locked by means of lateral studs 34 provided in the extension of the edges of the base 25 of the slide 24. These studs 34 are arranged to plug into slots 35 provided on the underside 11 of the housing 3, in the extension of the longitudinal grooves 22. They can also be provided with hooks at their end to be locked in the active position.

In this tightening position, shown in FIG. 2, the nut 31 is located between the lateral wings 16 and 17 of the fixed jaw 4, just below the returns 21 in the form of a half-dovetail. The lateral edges of the nut 31 include stops 36 which have a shape corresponding to that of the returns 21 to ensure proper support and hooking during tightening, and in particular to serve as a hooking means and to avoid the spacing of the lateral wings of the fixed jaw during this operation.
The lateral faces of the nut 31 are blocked between the wings 16 and 17 of the fixed jaw 4. The operation of the clamping screw 27 causes the stops 36 to be blocked on the returns 21 and the mobile jaw 5 to descend. The latter is guided in the central grooves 20 in the form of arcs of a circle to ensure crushing and correct connection of the cable ends 2, 2 '. This crushing mixes the constituent electrical wires; the mobile mounting of the pad 5 at the end of the screw 27 improves this operation.

The presence of an insulating structure around the connection vice makes it possible to secure this type of terminal.
In the field of electrical connections for lighting candelabras, the side walls 7 and 8 of the housing 3 are preferably extended, on the underside 11 of the latter, by monobloc cheeks 38. These side cheeks extend in front of the jaw fixed 4 and their size is adapted according to the environment to protect access to the cable ends and to the fixed jaw.

As shown in Figures 1 and 4, terminal 1, according to the invention, comprises means for receiving a bypass plug 39 for supplying a circuit breaker not shown. These means consist of a female socket 40 defined by an orifice made in the brass nut 31 and in one of the cheeks 29 which holds it. This plug 39 and its supply wire pass through an appropriate opening made in the upper face 12 of the insulating housing 3.

Several connection terminals 1 of the same type can be connected. To this end, the terminal 1 comprises means for fixing a connecting bar 41 which is insulated between its ends. These means consist of a slot 42, provided in the upper face 12 of the housing 3 and two communicating orifices 43 and 44 provided respectively in the bottom 18 of the fixed jaw 4 and in the rear wall 10 of said housing. The bar 41 has, at each of its ends, a flat plug 45 in which is an orifice 46. Once placed on the bottom 18 of the fixed jaw 4, the assembly can be assembled by means of a fixing screw 47 Note that the slot 42 can be closed by a thin precut pad which the operator can open as required.

This bar 41 may consist of a single insulated wire between its two ends, as shown in the figure 1, or be in the form of a comb in order to directly connect several boxes.

The electrical connection terminal according to the invention may also include a reception groove 48 in the form of a dovetail, associated with a central orifice 49, to allow positioning on a fixing rail not shown.

The electrical connection terminal described above is particularly suitable for the connection of candelabra power cables. Of course, it can be used in other fields and its structure will then be adapted accordingly.

The reference signs inserted after the technical characteristics mentioned in the claims are intended only to facilitate the understanding of the latter and in no way limit their scope.
