Abstract

The invention relates to a drip-catcher for, for instance, a bottle and intended for preventing dripping and drops seeping from the bottle orifice during pouring. The drip-catcher of the invention simply consists of a piece (1) of flexible and elastic foil material, preferably plastic material foil having the thickness of 0.1-0.2 mm. The diameter of the piece of material may be 60-80 mm. When used as a drip-catcher the piece of material is rolled into an oblong cylindrical form and inserted in the orifice of the bottle. Due to its elasticity the piece of material will positively engage the orifice and constitute a tube-formed outlet spout. Due to the small thickness of the foil material and its liquid-repellent nature this spout cuts off the jet very efficiently and is also a very efficient drop-catcher. The drip-catcher of the invention is extremely simple and cheap. Its use is uncomplicated and it is universally applicable because the piece of material adjusts itself to the bottle orifice irrespective of its size. The effect of the drip-catcher is remarkable due to the small thickness and liquid-repellent surface of the material.

Description

  • The present invention relates to a pouring device or drip-catcher for a bottle and of the kind indicated in the preamble of claim 1.
  • FR-B-1 198 362 discloses a pouring device of this kind consisting of an elastic transparent or coloured sheet material, which is rolled together to form a tube inside the bottleneck, where the tube due to its flexibility adapt itself after the size of the bottleneck. However, this known pouring device has a rather complicated shape, namely a basically rectangular one in which the large side edges are cut like a triangle, the inclined edges thereof being interrupted close to the top of the triangle formed by the edges, so that the sheet material is continued in a rectangular shaped appendix or tongue, which at the outer end is rounded. One of the upright sides of the sheet material is provided with perpendicular cuts ending in small round holes forming squared flaps, which - when forming a tube of the sheet material - by binding together interact with the opposite upright side edge. The sheet material is rolled together to form a tube for placement into the bottleneck in such a manner, that the end - having a shape like a flute mouthpiece with said tongue at the outer end - remains outside.
  • The purpose of the invention is to provide a more simple, cheap and universally useful pouring device or drip-catcher which more efficiently than hitherto possible prevents splashing and dripping during pouring into, for instance, a glass.
  • According to the invention this is achieved by providing the pouring device or drip-catcher as indicated in the characterizing clause of claim 1. The pouring device or drip-catcher may in this embodiment be universally useful - as in this shape the rolling together of the piece of material to form said tubular drip-catcher may be initiated independent of the actual orientation of the plane circular piece of material.
  • Appropriately, the pouring device or drip-catcher may be such provided that - depending on the eleasticity and flexibility of the materiale in question - the thickness of the sheet member is of the order of 0.1 - 0.2 mm, and that the circular piece of material has a diameter of the order of 60 - 80 mm. The sheet material may consist of a plastic foil, a plastic laminated or impregnated paper or a suitable metalic foil.
  • To use the pouring device or drip-catcher it is rolled into an oblong tube or cylinder and one end of the tube is inserted in the bottleneck. Due to its flexibility the sheet material tends to unroll so as to assume its original plane shape and as a result it tightly engages the inside of the bottleneck opening. In this simple way a tubular pouring spout is formed. It should be noted that the device adapts itself to the orifice of the bottle irrespective of the orifice size, that is the drip-catcher is universally useful within a relatively large diameter interval.
  • When pouring, the liquid passes the tubular outlet presented by the drip-catcher. Due to the smooth and thin character of the foil material the outlet will constitute an ideal drip-catcher because the edge of the foil cuts off the jet sharply. By using a plastic material having a low adhesion effect to the liquid concerned the formation of a drop at the cutting-off edge is efficiently avoided which would otherwise, at the end of the pouring, lead to seeping down of drops on the outside of the bottle. In other words, the drip-catcher fulfills its task efficiently in a simple manner.
  • The invention is decribed in more details in the following, reference being made to the drawing, in which:-
  • Fig. 1
shows a circular piece of material according to the invention in its starting configuration,
    Fig. 2
shows the same piece of material as rolled into a tube for inserting in a bottle,
    Fig. 3
shows the piece of material inserted as a tubular drip-catcher in a bottle,
    Fig. 3A
shows a top view along arrows A-A of Fig. 3,
    Fig. 3A
shows a similar top view in which, however, the drip-catcher has been introduced into a somewhat larger bottleneck,
    Fig. 4
is a magnified sectional view showing the outlet edge or cutting off-edge of the drip-catcher, during pouring liquid out through the outlet, and
    Fig. 5
shows a similar view by the termination of the pouring.
  • In the embodiment shown in the drawing the pouring device or drip-catcher simply consists of a circular cut out piece of material 1 of 0.13 mm plastic foil or plastic laminate, for instance PVC plastic sheet or a similar plastic sheet quality. The material may be transparent, opaque or may be coloured. The material should possess a suitable flexibility dependent on the purpose so that the cylinder form shown in Fig. 2 may easily be obtained by manual rolling. The size of the piece of material depends on the size of the bottleneck. For usual domestic size bottles a diameter of 60 - 80 mm will be suitable.
  • Upon forming the plane piece of material into a cylinder (Fig. 2), it is inserted in the mouth of a bottle F (Fig. 3). Due to its elasticity the piece of material 1 will tend to unroll into its original plane shape which, however, the mouth of the bottle will prevent. The piece of material will thereby engage the inside of the bottle forming a spout-like outlet of the bottle. Presuming that the bottleneck is regularly round and smooth, the piece of material will seal efficiently inside the bottleneck and provide an ideal spout outlet.
  • During the pouring the thin sharp edge of the piece of material 1 at the outlet edge 2 causes that the jet V of liquid is efficiently cut off when the pouring is terminated - when the bottle is returned to its upright position. This cutting off prevents the formation of drops at the outlet edge 2, which drops would otherwise seep down on the outside of the bottle. The drop-repelling effect is enhanced by using a type of sheet member for the drip-catcher having a low surface adhesion to the liquid concerned.
  • As appears from the above the pouring device or drip-catcher is self-adjusting, that is the drip-catcher may be used for bottles of varying size, cf. Figs. 3A and 3B. Thus the drip-catcher is universally applicable. The cutting off effect of the drip-catcher is illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 showing the pouring operation at the outlet edge 2 and the termination of the pouring, respectively, in which latter situation the jet V of liquid is cut into a portion P which continues leaving the bottle and a portion Q which returns to the inside of the bottle. It should be noted that the sharp edge of the foil prevents drops from clinging to it, all in connection with the smooth liquid-repelling surface of the sheet member material and the surface tension of the liquid.
  • The invention is not restricted to the embodiments of the drawing and the foregoing description. The material of the cut out piece may be another material than here specified.
