Definitions

  • the invention relates to an electrical appliance with a molded housing, in particular a low voltage circuit breaker, with a device for connection to the terminal range of the appliance, according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • a device of the type mentioned allows connection to the terminal area of the circuit breaker of a cable by means of a terminal engaged on the terminal area. It is also possible to connect a bar or a cable lug with a bolt crossing the perforated terminal area or to equip this area with a connection strip from the rear.
  • Adapting the circuit breaker to the type of conductor connected requires the installation of a terminal or nut on the terminal area and this installation is generally carried out in the workshop and in any case before mounting the circuit breaker.
  • the terminal is often fixed to the terminal shelf or to the housing by a screw and this installation therefore requires a tool and a significant assembly time. It is interesting to be able to personalize the device at the last moment, that is to say during assembly or possibly after assembly in the box, by choosing the connection pieces suitable for the type of conductor and mounting them on the pads without the using a tool and by unqualified personnel.
  • connection terminals which can be threaded into a housing of the molded case, the latter being closed, to associate them to the terminal ranges.
  • the open cavities on the side of the circuit breaker facilitate access to the terminal areas and the installation of the connection pieces on these areas.
  • the metallic connection piece is carried and guided by the insulating plastic support which alone cooperates with the molded housing to position the connection pieces in the cavities. When connecting, this metal part is secured to the track, which is itself metallic by the clamping screw without exerting a stress on the molded case.
  • a cage terminal is inserted into the cavity so as to introduce the terminal area inside this cage, near the bottom of the terminal.
  • This bottom has on its internal face facing the beach, a projection capable of fitting into the orifice made in the beach, and thus immobilizing the terminal in the direction of insertion.
  • Maintaining the bollard in this nested position on the beach is obtained by inserting an insulating support in the cavity, this support being guided by slides, to wedge under the bottom of the bollard and thus avoid any displacement towards the exit from the projection of the beach opening.
  • These support guide slides insulation consist of a pair of grooves formed on the side faces of the insulating support, which longitudinal grooves cooperate with conjugated ribs formed on the walls of the cavity of the molded housing.
  • the insulating support is immobilized at the end of the insertion stroke by a latching system, for example constituted by a boss formed on one face of the groove which snaps into a cell in the rib. Any other snap-on system is of course usable and according to an important development of the invention, the insulating support is arranged in a cage, of shape combined with that of the terminal to slip on the latter and constitute an insulating screen.
  • the clamping screw which may be loose, is housed in a notch extending the cavity towards the front face of the molded case. This notch allows the passage of the screw tightening tool from the front face of the housing, and allows the installation and removal of the terminal with a partially or fully loose screw.
  • connection of a terminal or a bar to the terminal shelf involves the insertion of a nut at the rear of the shelf.
  • the tightening screw which crosses the terminal and the range by suitable holes, and which cause the tightening of the terminal on this range.
  • the nut of polygonal shape in particular rectangular, is placed in a housing of an insulating support, similar in shape to that of the aforementioned insulating support, allowing insertion into the cavity, being guided by the ribs formed on the internal walls of the cavity.
  • This insulating support is arranged to bring the nut behind the contact pad where it is held by this insulating support which snaps into the cavity.
  • the nut When screwing the clamping screw, the nut is of course secured to the terminal area without exerting direct stress on the molded housing. It is advantageous to equip the insulating support with two lateral flanges which frame the clamping screw in the mounted position, to form additional insulation screens.
  • the fixing of a terminal strip from the rear to the terminal area is carried out in a similar manner using an insulating support having a sleeve extending perpendicular to the direction of insertion of the insulating support.
  • the strip is inserted into its sleeve, and the strip / insulating support assembly is inserted into the cavity while being guided, as described above, by the slides formed in the cavity.
  • the end face of the bar faces the perforated area behind the latter, and it suffices to screw the clamping screw to secure this bar to the area.
  • the insulation can be perfect by extending the sleeve beyond the terminal range, so as to wrap the clamping screw.
  • a cover for example constituted by a piece snapped onto the insulating support and carrying an articulated cover closing this end of the sleeve in the folded position and releasing this opening for the installation of the screw in the raised position.
  • Figure 1 is a perspective view of a quadrupole device in which each terminal range is equipped with a connection device according to the four connection variants according to the invention.
  • Figure 2 is a detail view of Figure 1 showing the side face of the housing, the connecting pieces and the terminal pads being assumed removed.
  • Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a terminal connection device according to the invention.
  • FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the insulating support of the connection device according to FIG. 3.
  • FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the terminal of the connection device according to FIG. 3.
  • Figure 6 is a view similar to that of Figure 3, showing a device for connecting a terminal or a bar.
  • FIGS. 7 and 8 are views similar to those of FIGS. 4 and 5, respectively showing the insulating support and the nut of the connection device according to FIG. 6.
  • Figure 9 is a view similar to that of Figure 3 showing a rear connection device according to the invention.
  • FIGS. 10 and 11 are views similar to those of FIGS. 4 and 5, respectively showing an insulating support and a connection strip of the connection device according to FIG. 9.
  • FIG. 12 is a perspective view of a cover of the insulating support according to FIG. 10.
  • a breaking device in this case a low-voltage quadrupole circuit breaker, comprises a molded housing 10, having a front face 11 crossed by a control handle 12, and a rear face 13 for fixing on a plate or any other suitable support.
  • a base 16 and a cover 17 are arranged side by side of the connections 18, respectively input and output of the circuit breaker.
  • Each pole of the circuit breaker has two connections 18 connected by a conductor 19 into which is inserted a pair of contacts 20, the opening of which is controlled either manually by the lever 12, or automatically by trip devices (not shown), during a overload or fault.
  • Such molded case circuit breakers for example described in French Patent No. 2,583,570, are well known and they can of course be of the three-pole or unipolar type.
  • the connections 18 are all identical, and only one of them is described in detail below.
  • the conductor 19 ends with an end strip 21 opening onto the lateral face 14 of the housing 10.
  • the strip 21, substantially parallel to the front 11 and rear 13 faces, is disposed in a cavity 22, of generally rectangular shape, formed on the side of the side face 14.
  • the cavity 22 has two side faces 23 which playfully frame the track 21, a front face 24 provided with a notch 25 opening on the side of the front face 11 of the housing 10, and a bottom 26 open towards the posterior part but delimited by two lateral ribs 27.
  • the area 21 spaced from the lateral faces 23 is arranged in the vicinity of the bottom 26, leaving a space between the ribs 27 and this area 21.
  • the area 21 is perforated in its center by a orifice 28 and it can receive different connection devices, schematically illustrated in FIG. 1 and described in detail below.
  • FIGS 3 to 5 show a terminal connection device fitted to the first pole of the circuit breaker of Figure 1, the other poles being of course equipped in the same way.
  • the terminal 29 of a standard type with cage for the connection of a cable has a bottom 30, and on the opposite side a clamping screw 31.
  • a projection 32 is formed capable of s' fit into the orifice 28 of the track 21. It can be seen that the terminal 29 can be inserted into the cavity 22, in causing the track 21 to penetrate into the terminal 29 and the screw 31 into the front notch 25. A perpendicular movement towards the front applies the bottom 30 of the terminal 29 against the pad 21 and causes the projection 32 to penetrate into the orifice 28 to immobilize terminal 29 in the longitudinal direction of insertion.
  • Maintaining the terminal 29 in this position inserted into the cavity 22 is produced by an insulating support 33 shown in FIG. 4, the base 34 of which comprises a pair of grooves 35 conjugated with the ribs 27 of the cavity 22.
  • the insulating support 33 is arranged in the form of a cage 36 capable of fitting onto the terminal 29, constituting an insulation sheath.
  • the bottom 37 of this insulating cage 36 is arranged in a plate forming a wedge coming when the insulating support 33 is inserted into the cavity 22, to slide under the bottom 30 of the terminal 29.
  • the grooves 35 and ribs 27 constitute slides for guiding the movement of the insulating support 33, which has a boss 38 formed on one of the faces of the groove 35 which comes into the insertion position of the support 33 snap into a conjugate socket 39 to keep the support in the inserted position insulator 33.
  • the insulating support 33 prevents any displacement of the terminal 29 downwards in this figure and thus keeps the projection 32 fitted into the orifice 28.
  • the terminal 29 is ready to receive the cable which is fixed in the usual way by tightening the screw 31, rigidly securing the terminal 29 to the track 21.
  • the installation of the terminal 29 and its insulating support 33 requires no tools and can be performed, the housing molded being mounted on the plate or fixed in any suitable manner.
  • the terminal can be removed in reverse by removing the insulating support 33 and disengaging the terminal 29 by moving the projection 32 out of the orifice 28, and removing the terminal from the cavity 22.
  • FIGs 6 to 8 illustrate a device for connecting a lug 40 or a perforated bar, of the type shown on poles 3 and 4 of Figure 1.
  • This connection device consists of a nut 41 of general shape rectangular and a insulating support 42 having at its base grooves 35 capable of cooperating with the ribs 27 of the cavity 22.
  • the insulating support 42 has a base 43 for housing the nut 41, which can be placed on this base 43 or preferably inserted in a slide system 44 to secure the nut 41 and the insulating support 42.
  • the nut 41 / insulating support 42 assembly can be inserted into the cavity 22, being guided by the slides formed by the grooves 35 and the ribs 27 to bring the nut 41 under the perforated area 21 as illustrated in FIG. 6.

  • the installation of the connection device is particularly simple e t the tightened screw 46 secures the nut 41 to the plate 21 without exerting stress on the housing 10.
  • the replacement of this nut connection device 41 by another type of connection is carried out by simply removing the support 42 with nut 41, without requiring special tools.
  • FIG. 7 there is shown an insulating support 42 provided with two lateral flanges 47 coming to frame in the inserted position, the track 21 and the screw 46 to improve the electrical insulation.
  • the fourth pole of Figure 1 is equipped with a simplified support 42 without flanges 47 of insulation.
  • FIGS 9 to 12 and pole 2 of Figure 1 show the third variant of the connection device allowing a departure from the rear.
  • This connection device consists of a bar 48 and an insulating support 51.
  • the bar 48 having a square section is terminated on one side by a face 49 provided with a threaded orifice 50 and on the opposite side, a connection pad 52.
  • the insulating support 51 is arranged in the form of a sleeve 53 extending perpendicularly to the grooves 35 capable of cooperating with the ribs 27 to form guide rails in the manner described above.
  • the bar 48 is inserted into the sleeve 53 and the assembly is arranged in such a way that during the insertion of the insulating support 51 into the cavity 22, the face 49 is housed behind the track 21 by bringing the threaded orifice 50 to the right of the orifice 28 of the area 21.
  • the bar 48 advantageously comprises a flange 55 limiting the engagement of the bar 48 in the insulating support 51 to correctly position this bar relative to the range 21.
  • the polygonal section, in this case square, of the bar 48 prevents any rotation of the latter during the screwing of the screw 54.
  • the insulating support 51 advantageously comprises, in extension of the sleeve 53, a screen 56 enveloping the tightening screw 54 in order to improve the insulation of the connection.
  • an additional part 57 shown in FIG. 12 can be snapped onto the insulating support 51 in line with the screen 56.
  • This part 57 comprises a cover 58 capable of being folded down on the 'end of the screen 56 to obstruct it and avoid contact with the head of the screw 54.
  • the cover 58 has a hole for tightening or loosening the screw with a key. It can be raised to allow the screw to be put in place, which must be done after the support has been put in place.
  • the installation of the connection device is again particularly simple and the bar 48 extends towards the rear part between the ribs 27 while respecting the dimensions of the circuit breaker.
  • the personalization of the circuit breaker can thus be carried out during its assembly, the different types of connection being either systematically delivered with the circuit breaker, or supplied at the request of the fitter.
  • the type of connection can be changed on site without dismantling the device and standardization of connections for different types of device is conceivable.
  • connection devices according to the invention is trapped in the housing 10 and any risk of deterioration of the latter, during the establishment or during the tightening of the fixing screw, is thus excluded.
