Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method for printing ID cards that have blind holes.
  • Identity cards of this type are known, for example, from EP 0 197 847.
  • the cards described therein consist of a single-layer card body, which contains a multi-level recess for receiving a chip module.
  • FR 2 622 323 also discloses injection-molding cards with blind holes for later installation of chip modules, which are separated from a plastic plate.
  • the plastic plate is manufactured in a multi-use mold. Before the individual cards are removed, the plastic plate can be printed in multi-color printing, for example.
  • the maximum depth of the recess differs only slightly from the thickness of the identity card or the plastic plate, so that only in the area of the maximum depth of the recess a thin layer of about 100 ⁇ m remains. This layer is referred to below as the membrane.
  • the invention is therefore based on the object of specifying a method which also makes it possible to produce an error-free printed image in the region of the membrane and to optimally protect the identification card from damage at least in this region.
  • the basic idea of the invention is to mount an element adapted to the blind hole-shaped recess on the counter-pressure roller, which element at least partially fills the blind hole-shaped recess at the moment of printing and presses the membrane against the pressure roller.
  • the advantages achieved with the invention consist in particular in that, by introducing the element adapted to the recess, unevenness in the identification card is eliminated during the printing process and an ideal surface is created.
  • This allows the identification card to be printed with a finely structured printed image even if the fine structures extend over the bottom region of the blind hole-shaped recess. It is thus possible to apply printed images of any complexity and in high quality to the surface of the identification card opposite the blind hole-shaped recess.
  • damage to the ID card in the area of the membrane is almost impossible, since the forces acting on the membrane compensate at the moment of printing. This means that the resulting force never acts on the membrane.
  • Fig. 1 shows an identification card 10 with a two-stage blind hole-shaped recess 12 in plan view.
  • the blind hole-shaped recess serves to later accommodate a chip module, not shown.
  • FIG. 2 shows an enlarged detail of section A-B of FIG. 1.
  • the card body 10 shown can be manufactured in one operation, for example using injection molding technology, but other manufacturing methods are also conceivable (milling out the recess).
  • the recess 12 has a membrane 11 which, in the worst case, can also be deformed concavely so that it does not lie in the card surface 13 to be printed.
  • FIG. 3 shows an exemplary embodiment of an element 14 adapted to the blind hole-shaped recess.
  • the element 14 can be made of a rigid material in such a way that it fills the blind hole-shaped recess 12 completely and in its entirety when introduced into it.
  • the dashed line in FIG. 2 shows an element 14 which only covers the membrane when it is introduced into the recess.
  • a compressible material e.g. cork or rubber.
  • Fig. 4 shows such a compressible element 14 in a two-step recess.
  • No pressure is initially exerted on the element 14.
  • the part of the element 14 reaching up to the membrane 11 only partially covers the membrane 11.
  • a gap remains between the side walls of this part of the element 14 and the side walls of the second stage of the recess.
  • the part of the element 14 reaching up to the membrane 11 is designed in such a height that the height in the unloaded state of the element 14 is slightly greater than the depth of the second step of the pocket-shaped recess 12. This has the consequence that the remaining part of the Elements 14 does not rest on paragraph 15 of the first stage in the unloaded state. Rather, there is a gap between this part of the element 14 and the paragraph 15.
  • the remaining part of the element 14 is dimensioned such that in the unloaded state there is a gap between the side walls of this part and the side walls of the first stage of the two-stage blind hole-shaped recess 12.
  • the card is loaded together with the element 14 with a force oriented perpendicular to the card surface.
  • This force 16 causes the element 14 to be pressed into the two-stage recess.
  • the membrane 11 is pressed against a base (not shown for clarity).
  • the element 14 spreads in the plane perpendicular to the force 16, regardless of the direction, in the pocket-shaped recess until it is filled almost completely. If there is no more pressure on the element 14, the deformation of the element 14 caused by the pressure is reversed. This allows the element 14 to be removed from the two-stage blind hole-shaped recess in such a way that the walls of the element 14 and the recess 12 do not touch. When removing the card, there are no forces on the card could damage.
  • the device shows a cross section through a device for printing ID cards.
  • the device consists of two rotatably mounted cylinders 17 and 18.
  • the two cylinders 17 and 18 can, for. B. be arranged vertically one above the other.
  • the distance between the cylinders 17 and 18 corresponds to the sum of the cylinder radii and the thickness of the object to be printed. Thus, this can be passed between the cylinders 17 and 18.
  • the passage between the cylinders 17 and 18 is perpendicular to the line connecting the two cylinder axes.
  • the cylinder 17 serves as a printing roller, which applies the printed image to the identification card.
  • the associated technology is not to be described in more detail here, since it is sufficiently known to the person skilled in the art.
  • the second cylinder 18 acts as a counter-pressure roller, which presses the object to be printed against the pressure roller 17.
  • the elements 14 are glued at periodic intervals so that they can be pressed into the pocket-shaped recess of the identification card and, as shown in FIG. 7, fill the recess during the printing process. After the area of the card having the recess has passed the two rollers 17, 18, the element 14 is removed from the recess again by the rotation of the roller 17 and the straight transport of the card.
  • the device for printing identification cards shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 is only of an exemplary character, other embodiments are conceivable. So z. B. the two rollers 17 and 18 do not necessarily have the same radius; A smaller radius of one of the two rollers 17 and 18 can be compensated for by a correspondingly higher angular velocity during the roller rotation. In addition, an arrangement of Pressure plate and counter pressure plate (which contains the element 14) on cylinders for the production of printed identification cards with a blind hole-shaped recess 12 are not necessary. Other arrangements are also conceivable.
  • FIG. 8 shows a device for printing ID cards with a blind hole-shaped cutout in an enlarged detail.
  • This embodiment is characterized in that the element 14 is movably mounted in the impression cylinder 18.
  • the following describes an example of how the mobility of the element 14 can be created and what advantages result from this mobility.
  • the element 14 made of rubber is fixed on the end face of a stepped pin 19.
  • the stepped pin 19 is located in a sleeve 21 which is mounted in the impression cylinder 18.
  • the pin 19 is held in a defined position by a compression spring 20 arranged in the sleeve 21.
  • the compression spring 20 presses the shoulder of the pin 19 against a stop 24 screwed into the sleeve 21, which causes a reduction in the inner diameter of the sleeve 21.
  • the position of the stepped pin 19 in the sleeve 21 can thus be set precisely, or the protrusion of the element 14 over the surface of the impression cylinder can be precisely defined.
  • the pin can also be fixed against the force of a tension spring 20 by means of corresponding sliding mechanisms which engage in recesses in the pin 19 (not shown).
  • the pin 19 would also be adjustable, but in contrast to the embodiment shown in FIG. 8, it could no longer be elastically lowered inwards.
  • Other variants are also possible depending on the mode of operation required.
  • the pin 19 is freely movable in the sleeve 21 in the radial direction towards the center of the impression cylinder 18.
  • a force acts on the element 14 which overcomes the force exerted by the compression spring 20, the pin 19 is thus pressed into the interior of the sleeve 21. If the force on the element 14 decreases, the pin 19 is pressed again by the compression spring 20 against the stop 24, so that the element 14 returns to its original position.
  • the pin 19 can additionally be rotatably supported in the sleeve 21 by a nose which engages in a longitudinal groove.
  • these securing means have not been taken into account in FIG. 8.
  • the mobility of the element 14 gives the advantage that both ID cards with pocket-shaped recesses and those without such depressions can be printed without the impression cylinder 18 being damaged or without the impression cylinder 18 having to be replaced.
  • the device according to the invention can only be modified in such a way that a correspondingly positioned element engages in each recess.
