Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a continuous strip provided with heat-shrinkable tubular sheaths intended to receive printed cable identification codes, comprising at least one row of said flattened tubular sheaths arranged transversely and spaced from one another in the longitudinal direction of the strip, and a support strip to which the sheaths are removably attached using an adhesive.
  • Heat-shrink tubing intended to be threaded on electric cables or on bundles of wires in order to identify them must bear individual printed codes. For reasons of speed, this printing is done more and more by means of a printer controlled by a microcomputer, the sheaths being aligned on a support strip on which they are fixed by means of an adhesive allowing them tear off easily. However, the printing of the tapes thus formed encounters certain difficulties when it is carried out in a printer.
  • US Patent 4,198,451 describes an arrangement where the marking sheaths are flattened and juxtaposed on a sheet of paper to which they are fixed by dots of an adhesive capable of being torn off. This arrangement is intended for marking by means of a typewriter, but it does not ensure a fairly precise positioning in a printer. This is why we have sought solutions using as support a strip with perforated edges, allowing a drive by spike wheels to ensure correct indexing of each sheath in a printer.
  • US Pat. No. 3,894,731 provides that the flattened sheaths are inserted on parallel fingers cut out from one edge of a support strip, the continuous part of which is provided with a row of perforations, for its drive by spikes. However, as the fingertips are free and are not positively driven, the stability of each sleeve on the printer cylinder is not guaranteed at all.
  • a current solution is to mount the flattened sheaths between two perforated lateral strips which are adjacent to the ends of the sheaths, which are fixed to the corresponding strip simply by means of adhesive tape on each side.
  • it is difficult to thus obtain a uniform transverse spacing of the lateral bands, corresponding to the spacing of the spike wheels of the printer.
  • the entire strip has a ladder-like structure whose stability and resistance are low and give rise to problems of snagging and tearing when passing through the printer.
  • the present invention therefore aims to avoid the problems mentioned above, by arranging the heat-shrinkable sleeves on a support capable of passing them securely through a printer provided with pin drive means and indexing them. correctly, while allowing them to be detached easily for insertion on the cables for which they are intended.
  • the subject of the present invention is a continuous strip of the type indicated in the preamble, characterized in that the support strip has perforations along its two edges and at least one row of individual windows for the sheaths, the dimension of each window in the longitudinal direction of the strip being equal to or greater than the corresponding dimension of the sheath associated therewith, and in that at least the ends of the sheaths are fixed to the support strip by means of one or several adhesive tapes arranged longitudinally and applied both against the sheaths and against the support strip.
  • the support strip can advantageously be made of paper.
  • a wide adhesive tape having a width greater than that of the windows, covers one face of the support strip in the area occupied by a row of windows and itself has corresponding windows which are smaller than those of the support strip in the longitudinal direction, so that the transverse edges of these windows encroach on the windows of the support strip and are fixed to the transverse edges of the sheaths associated with these windows.
  • Said wide adhesive tape is preferably located on the same side of the strip as the face of the sheaths which is to receive the code.
  • the dimension of each window of the support strip in the direction of the width of the strip is equal to or greater than the corresponding dimension of the associated sheath, so that the sheath is entirely housed inside the window.
  • the ends of the ducts can be fixed by means of a pair of adhesive tapes overlapping the ends of the windows and the adjacent areas of the support strip. A pair of said ribbons can be placed on each side of the strip.
  • each window of the support strip in the direction of the width of the strip is less than the corresponding dimension of the associated sheath, so that the two ends of each sheath are applied against a face of the support strip.
  • said face of the support strip is the face opposite to the face of the sheaths which is to receive an impression.
  • Said ends of the sheaths can be covered with a pair of adhesive tapes.
  • Figures 1 to 3 show a continuous strip 1 comprising a support strip 2 on which are fixed heat-shrink tubular sheaths 3 which are shown in phantom and are not hatched in section, to clarify the drawing. These sheaths are of a known type and are intended to receive identical printed codes on the two faces, then to be torn off from the strip 1 to serve for locating cables as explained above.
  • the strip 2 has a row of perforations 4 along each of its longitudinal edges, in order to cooperate in known manner with a spike drive in a printer. In its central part, the support strip 2 is pierced with a row of rectangular windows 5 in which the sheaths are housed 3.
  • the windows 5 are all similar and regularly spaced, with a pitch which depends on the pitch of the perforations 4, so as to ensure them a precise positioning into the printer.
  • the ends 6 of each sheath 3 are fixed to the support strip 2 by means of a pair of adhesive tapes 7 covering them on the upper face of the strip and of a pair of adhesive tapes 8 covering them in the same way on the underside.
  • the strips 7 and 8 overlap the ends of the windows 5, that is to say that one half of their width is glued continuously on the support strip 2 and the other half alternately covers the ends of the sheaths 3 and transverse strips 9 of the support strip.
  • the support strip 2 can be made of paper or any other flexible material which is sufficiently rigid in its own plane to ensure proper positioning of the sheaths 3 during printing.
  • the transverse bands 9 extending between the windows 5 play an essential role. On the one hand they ensure a constant spacing between the two rows of perforations 4. On the other hand they oppose a deformation of the strip 2 by shearing in its plane, that is to say an advance of one edge relative to each other. If necessary, they also make it possible to reinforce the fixing of the sheaths 3, by means of one or more longitudinal ribbons (not shown) applied to the middle part of the back of the sheaths 3 and of the strips 9.
  • the support strip 2 has a thickness substantially less than that of the flattened sheaths 3, but nothing prevents it from being given a relatively large thickness, provided that it retains the desired flexibility.
  • the thickness of the adhesive tapes such as 7 and 8 has been deliberately exaggerated, so that they are better visible.
  • the windows 5 are higher than the sheaths 3, in the longitudinal direction of the strip 1. Therefore, the transverse edges of the sheaths 3 enter the printer directly behind a transverse strip 9 and therefore present much less risk of snagging than if they were applied to one face of the support strip.
  • the strips 7 and 8 can be very thin, since they do not need to have the rigidity of the support strip 2, the total thickness of the continuous strip 1 does not exceed hardly that of the sheaths 3.
  • the continuous strip 11 illustrated in FIGS. 4 to 6 differs from the strip 1 in that it does not have any adhesive tape 7 on its upper face.
  • This embodiment makes it possible to use printheads which pass very close to the surface to be printed, and also to apply prints very close to the ends 6 of the sheaths 3. If necessary, the ribbons 8 can be wider in order to have a larger bonding area on the back of the sheaths 3.
  • the windows 25 of the support strip 2 are narrower (in the transverse direction of the strip) than the windows 5 of the previous examples, so that the ends 6 of the sheaths 3 are applied against support strip 2.
  • the adhesive tapes 8 do not encroach on the windows 25 and therefore cannot create untimely collages or deposits of adhesive when a sheath 3 has been removed voluntarily or accidentally.
  • the upper face of the sheaths 3 can be slightly set back from the upper face of the support strip 2 when the strip 21 is free, as shown in FIG. 8. But when the strip 21 is supported by the surface of the roll of a printer, the printing area of the sheaths 3 is pushed forward and tends to assume the position illustrated in FIG. 9, where it is practically flush with the surface of the support strip.
  • a wide adhesive tape 37 is applied to the support strip 2 and completely covers it, with the exception of the edge zones provided with perforations 4.
  • the windows 25 of the strip support 2 are similar to those of the previous example.
  • the adhesive tape 37 itself comprises windows 35 placed opposite the windows 25 and having the same width as the latter, but a smaller height (in the longitudinal direction of the strip).
  • two adhesive zones of the tape 37 are visible along the upper and lower edges of the windows 25 and are glued to the corresponding edges of the sheaths 3.
  • the ends 6 of the sheaths are not glued; they are retained behind the support strip 2, which prevents any catching with the head of a printer.
  • a specific advantage of the strip 31 is that the transverse edges of the sheaths 3 are perfectly guided and cannot catch on while the strip advances in the printer.
  • the adhesive tape 37 can be applied to the support strip 2 before the sheaths are put in place 3. It also has the effect of reinforcing the strip between the windows.
  • the strip 41 illustrated in FIGS. 13 to 15 corresponds to the strip 31 to which a pair of adhesive tapes 8 has been added on the underside, as in the example in FIGS. 7 to 9, in order to prevent accidental tearing of the sheaths 3 by hooking one of their ends 6. In this way, the sheaths 3 are fixed over their entire around.
  • the present invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiments described above, but it extends to all modifications or variants obvious to a person skilled in the art.
  • the adhesive tapes can be placed at will on the upper face or on the lower face of the strip.
  • the windows 25 narrower than the sheaths 3 can be replaced in each case by windows 5 longer than the sheaths.
