Abstract

A stretching and drying system for skins after they have been dyed consists of a rotary vaned drum which acts on the skins to stretch them, and at least one pair of drums between which the skins are squeezed to dry them. The pairs of pressing drums have a band of a flexible material, e.g. felt, passing round them. The flexible material is on the same level as the skins as they pass under the vaned stretching drum on an input conveyor which travels more slowly than the bands. The drying of the skins is completed in a vacuum, with the skins placed on plates heated to 50-60 deg C.

Description

After they have been subjected to dyeing in barrels which are rotated along their longitudinal axis oriented horizontally, the skins are extracted from the above barrels to be then subjected to the drawing and drying operations.

First of all, the skins are caused to pass into the space between at least two drums, in order to be pressed, which makes it possible to obtain the expulsion of a portion of the liquids with which said skins are still soaked.

One of the devices of known type for ensuring this operation comprises a machine which operates discontinuously and which comprises, upstream of the two above-mentioned drums, another drum with blades formed by a cylindrical element which will also be applied against the skins at the level of one of its generatrices and which has, on its side wall, a series of blades arranged in a helix and wound in opposite directions along two zones opposite with respect to the transverse plane of symmetry of said drum, which blades are able to effect an effective preliminary distension of the skin before it is subjected to pressing.

On the side of the blade drum is provided an application drum, the skins being caused to pass between these two drums.

Downstream of the blade drum is mounted a first pair of pressing drums, which also ensures the advancement of the skins. It should be noted here that the blade drum rotates in the opposite direction to that corresponding to the advance of the skins.

The machine is divided into two structures, one of which is movable relative to the other: on the first of these structures are mounted the blade drum and one of the pressing drums, while the other carries the drum application and the second pressing drum.

The skins are manually engaged in the machine when the two structures are spaced from each other; after having correctly in. sitioned the skin, the operator can then proceed to the pressing or spinning operation. On leaving the machine, the skins are removed manually to be stored properly on a mechanical stacker.

Then, these skins are subjected to the drying phase, obtained by placing them on plates which are heated to around 70 ° C., preferably under vacuum in order to facilitate the drying process. Sometimes the skins are dried directly in the open air, but this solution involves immobilizing the articles for an extended period of time.

The above-mentioned process involves considerable downtime, which is due to the intermittent operation of the pressing device and which affects the productivity of the whole process.

Furthermore, the fact that the two pressing drums are mounted on two structures which can be moved apart or brought closer depending on the working phases is such as to determine a very clear limitation of the pressure that the two drums can exert on the skin to be treated, and, in the final analysis, a limitation of the percentage of liquid which can be eliminated during this phase. It follows that most of the liquid must be removed during the second phase of the process; so that the latter does not have unacceptable durations, it is necessary to operate at the relatively high temperatures mentioned above, which inevitably implies a certain reduction in the quality of the skins.

The present invention proposes to implement a method of stretching and drying the skins at their exit from the dyeing operation which is free from the drawbacks mentioned above.

The process according to the invention is defined in claim 1. In fact, according to the invention the pressing phase is carried out using a device operating continuously and comprising means for the continuous supply of the skins between the two pressing drums; around the drum or drums provided at at least one of the faces of the skin to be pressed is mounted a movable mat which constitutes the element which will effectively bring the skins into contact, it being noted that another mat can be mounted around the rollers provided on the oppo side the skin to be pressed.

Such a structure is capable of giving surprising results as regards the quantity of liquid which can be wrung during the phase in which the said structure is involved, the said quantity possibly reaching up to 70%.

Such a result can only be obtained as a result of the greater effort that a structure can exert in which the pressing drums always remain at a pre-established spacing.

In addition, the presence of the carpets, preferably made of felt, is likely to increase the surface which performs the pressing, which surface in the case of the device implementing the usual process is very small since it extends only at the level of the zone. of contact between the skins and the pressing drums.

This advantage is reflected in the fact that, being less humid, the skins, on leaving the device according to the invention, can be stretched more easily on the drying benches; furthermore, this last phase now has a much shorter duration and can be carried out with plates whose temperature is lower, for example of the order of 50 to 60 ° C., which obviously improves the quality of the finished product.

It should also be remembered that the vapors emitted by the skins when heated always contain harmful substances, so that reducing the temperature obviously improves the conditions of the working environment of the operators.

Another advantage lies in the fact that the device according to the invention comprising at least one drum with prior stretching blades of the type described above, and also taking into account the greater pressure that the pressing drums can exert on the skins, the latter tend to increase their surface considerably, which constitutes a notable advantage for producers of skins since, as is known, skins are usually sold by unit of surface and not by unit of weight.

The foregoing characteristics, as well as others provided for by the invention, will now be described in detail with the aid of a particular embodiment, with reference to the appended drawing in which:
  • The single figure is a schematic side view of the device capable of ensuring the pressing phase of the skins, according to the envisaged embodiment of the invention.

In this figure, it can be seen that the skin 1 is brought to the pressing means using a movable belt 2 actuated by a cylinder 3 and wound around a return cylinder 4.

In this particular embodiment of the invention, two pairs of pressing drums 5 and 6 are provided, arranged one after the other. Obviously the drums which are provided on either side of the opposite faces of the skin rotate in opposite directions so as to ensure the correct advancement of said skin.

It will be observed that the invention can provide both a single pair of drums and a number of pairs greater than two.

The drums are not directly brought into contact with the skins, but on the contrary between said drums and the skins is interposed a mat 7 preferably made of felt and whose movement is ensured by the aforementioned drums, also wrapping around return cylinders 8.

Upstream of the first pair of drums 5 is provided a blade drum 10 which rotates in a proper direction to tend to oppose the skins to be pressed in advance, all in known manner.

The present invention may also, for feeding the skins, provide means which differ from the conveyor belt 2 above illustrated and described.

Advantageously, this conveyor belt 2 is driven with an advance speed lower than the linear speed of the pressing drums, so that when the skin is gripped by said drums at one of its edges, it is stretched as a result of the combined and antagonistic actions of the pressing drums and the blade drum.
