- the method is one that permits of reproducing ornamental motifs, figures, designs &c. in relief on any given type of fabric, leather or like material, by deforming it with the imprint of a selected pattern in such a way that the resulting image remains durably impressed, and the properties of the material which ensure its flexibility and softness to the touch are retained entirely intact.
- the prior art embraces essentially two techniques that are widely adopted for reproducing decoration in relief, on fabrics in particular, of which one is embroidery; the other involves silkcreening with special inks that swell selectively when subjected to heat treatment.
- Another conventionally adopted expedient is to produce the imprint by subjecting the fabric to a pressing operation, substantially as in moulding or drawing, then filling the recesses formed on the reverse side of the impression with a silicone-base or other similar adhesive of semi-fluid or viscous consistency which, in solidifying subsequently and adhering, acquires the properties of an elastomer and thus enables the fabric to retain the imprinted decoration permanently.

- the method disclosed involves forming the fabric or leather by means of a heated die bearing a negative or positive imprint of the figure to be reproduced; prior to the forming operation, a flexible layer of woven or non-woven thermoformable synthetic fibres is offered at least to one side of the fabric or leather, together with at least one interfacing film of hot melt adhesive material the purpose of which is to bond together the fabric or leather and the synthetic fibres.
- One advantage afforded by the method disclosed is that it can be applied for synthetic and natural fibre fabrics alike.

- the fabric or leather 1 is compressed between a die 3, bearing a negative imprint of the design to be reproduced in relief, and a flexible cushion or pad 4, which in the example of fig 2 consists in a suitably thick sheet of elastomer.
- 11 denotes the obverse or top side of the fabric or leather 1, which is destined to entire into contact with the die 3; before the thermoforming stroke is effected, the bottom or reverse side, denoted 12, is faced with at least one thin film of hot melt adhesive material 13, and sandwiching the adhesive, a suitably thick, flexible woven or non-woven layer of synthetic fibres 15.
- the further step may be included, prior to applying the adhesive film 13, of shaving the reverse side 12 of the material 1 to a greater or lesser depth.

- the hot melt adhesive film 13, preferably polyurethane, serves to bond the fabric or leather 1 and the layer of synthetic fibres 15 by heat-sealing them together during the thermoforming stroke.
- the hot melt film 13 may conveniently have been attached to the surface of the woven or non-woven material 15 in a previous operation, in order to simplify and speed up the step of positioning the sandwiched materials in the press. Similarly, the efficiency of the heat-sealing operation could be enhanced by previous application of a further hot melt film to the reverse side 12 of the fabric or leather 1.
- the die 3 consists in a sheet of material with good heat conduction properties of which the bottom face exhibits a negative imprint 7, in the case of the example described and illustrated, of the design to be reproduced.
- the reverse of the die 3 is smooth, and offered flush to the corresponding flat surface of a die holder 8, which constitutes the fixed part of the press 2 and incorporates means capable of generating thermal energy for conduction, as heat, through to the die 3.
- the flexible cushion or pad 4 is carried by the moving part 9 of the press, and stroked vertically by a hydraulic ram 10.
- the hot forming step is effected by first arranging the woven or non-woven layer of synthetic fibres 15 on the cushion or pad 4, the adhesive film 13 over the fibres, and then the fabric or leather 1 over the film, whereupon the sandwich thus created is forcibly deformed by operating the ram 10 to bring the moving part 9 of the press up toward the die 3. More precisely, the top side 11 of the fabric or leather 1 is obliged to engage the imprint 7 of the die 3, or at least, those areas of the die surface that project farthest downward, by virtue of the capacity of the pad 4 to deform elastically under the high pressing forces. Similarly, the layer of synthetic fibres 15 beneath is made to undergo the thermoforming action generated by the die 3 and transmitted through the fabric or leather 1, and given the thermoformable nature of the fibres, will remain permanently imprinted.
- the fabric 1 affords optimum properties of flexibility and elasticity precisely at those points of the obverse side 11 which stand in relief. It is during the thermally conditioned forcing stroke that the hot melt adhesive film 13 performs its designated function by firmly bonding together the fabric or leather 1 and the woven or non-woven layer of synthetic fibres 15 beneath. With the thermoforming operation completed, the cushion or pad 4 is distanced from the die 3 and the fabric or leather 1, now permanently invested with the imprint, can be removed and cooled.
- thermoformed imprint The long term stability of the thermoformed imprint is ensured by the close bond between the two layers of material 1 and 15 and by virtue of the fact that the deformation of the synthetic fibres, produced under heat, is permanent.
