An dem dem Schlitzrad 14 gegenüberliegenden Ende der Welle 25 ist eine als Reibbremse ausgebildete Bremsanordnung 34 (Fig.3 und 4) angeordnet. Diese Bremsanordnung 34 weist eine mit einem Fortsatz 25a der Welle 25 mitdrehende Bremsscheibe 35 auf, die mittels Tellerfedern 36 gegen eine Bremsplatte 37 gedrückt wird, die an der Grundplatte 5 verankert ist. Die Tellerfedern 36 werden mittels einer Unterlagsscheibe 38 und einer Schraube 39 vorgespannt. Mit dieser Bremsanordnung 34 wird auf die Welle 25 und somit auf das Schlitzrad 14 ein gewisses Bremsmoment ausgeübt, zu dessen Ueberwindung ein dementsprechend höheres Drehmoment erforderlich ist, das durch am Schlitzrad 14 bzw. am Klinkenrad 26 angreifende Kräfte erzeugt wird.A brake arrangement 34 (FIGS. 3 and 4) designed as a friction brake is arranged on the end of the shaft 25 opposite the slot wheel 14. Mittels der bereits erwähnten, im Spannhebel 15 untergebrachten Umschalteinrichtung, die durch Drehen des Drehknopfes 20 betätigt wird, wird jeweils eine der beiden Mitnehmerklinken mit dem Klinkenrad 26 bzw. der Steuerscheibe 32 in Eingriff gebracht. Aufbau und Wirkungsweise dieser Umschalteinrichtung ist in der erwähnten EP-OS 0188720 näher erläutert. Durch das unter sehr grosser Spannung stehende Umreifungsband 3, das wie bereits erwähnt durch einen Schlitz 14a des Schlitzrades 14 geführt ist, wird nun das Spannrad 14 im Uhrzeigersinn, d.h. in Richtung des Pfeiles E (Fig.1), zurückgedreht, wodurch die Zugspannung im zwischen dem Schlitzrad 14 und der Klemmeinrichtung 16 verlaufenden Bandabschnitt 3c herabgesetzt wird. Dieses Herabsetzen der Bandspannung im Bandabschnitt 3c erfolgt im Zeitraum t₂ bis t₃ (Fig.5). Sobald das vom Umreifungsband 3 auf das Schlitzrad 14 ausgeübte Rückdrehmoment den Wert des Bremsmomentes erreicht hat, das durch die Bremsanordnung 34 auf die Welle 25 ausgeübt wird, wird das Schlitzrad 14 blockiert und gegen ein weiteres Zurückdrehen gesichert. Dieser Zustand wird im Zeitpunkt t₃ (Fig.5) erreicht. Im Bandabschnitt 3c verbleibt eine Restzugspannung σ₂ (Fig.5), die bis zum Abschluss des Verschliessvorganges (Zeitpunkt t₄) aufrechterhalten wird. Die Steuerscheibe 32 dreht sich noch etwas in Richtung des Pfeiles F weiter, was zur Folge hat, dass die obere Schweissbacke 9 abgesenkt und die untere Schweissbacke 10 in Bewegung versetzt wird. Nun erfolgt ein Verschweissen der übereinanderliegenden Bereiche 3a' und 3b' des Umreifungsbandes 3 in der Reibschweisseinrichtung 8. Claims (9)

  1. A device for tensioning and sealing a strap (3) of synthetic plastics material for encircling a package (1), comprising a first clamping means (4) for gripping the bottom initial portion (3a) of the encircling strap (3), a tensioning wheel (14) intended for gripping the top portion (3b) of the encircling strap (3) for tensioning the latter, a friction welding means (8) which, viewed in the direction of tensioning (A), preceding the tensioning wheel (14), and being provided with two welding jaws (9, 10) adapted for movement in relation to each other for the connection of overlapping portions (3a', 3b') of the encircling strap (3), and, upstream when viewed in the tensioning direction (A) of the friction welding means (8), a second clamping means (16) which can be activated upon completion of the tensioning process, for securely gripping the upper portion (3b) of the encircling strap (3), and with a relieving arrangement (32, 34) adapted to be brought into action on the tensioning wheel (14) upon completion of the clamping process, and which brings about a relieving of the tractive force exerted on the encircling strap (3) by the tensioning wheel (14) at the end of the tensioning process so that, when viewed in the direction of tensioning (A), in the portion (3c) of the encircling strap (3) which is behind the friction welding means (8) a residual tension (σ 2) is maintained which is less than the tractive stress (σ 1) in the encircling strap (3) at the end of the tensioning process and with a separating means (12) disposed between the friction welding means (8) and the tensioning wheel (14) for parting the upper portion (3b) of the encircling strap (3) once welding of the latter is completed.
  2. A device according to Claim 1, characterised in that the relieving arrangement comprises a control arrangement (32) for releasing the tensioning wheel (14) after activation of the second clamping means (16) and a braking arrangement (34) which can be caused to act on the tensioning wheel (14) and which after a certain rotation of the released tensioning wheel (14) responds under the effect of the tensioned encircling strap (3) and secures the tensioning wheel (14) against any further reverse rotation.
  3. A device according to Claim 2, characterised in that the tensioning wheel (14) is coupled to a locking mechanism (27) which secures it against any reverse rotation and which can be released upon completion of the tensioning process and after activation of the second clamping means (16) by the control arrangement (32).
  4. A device according to Claim 3, characterised in that the locking mechanism comprises, connected in rotationally rigid fashion to the tensioning wheel (14), a ratchet wheel (26) and engaging this latter a detent (28) which for its release acts upon a control means (32), preferably a control disc, of the control arrangement.
  5. A device according to Claim 2, characterised in that the braking arrangement is a friction brake (34) which acts on the shaft (25) of the tensioning wheel (14).
  6. A device according to Claim 5, characterised in that to generate a given braking moment, the friction brake (34) has braking means (35, 37) which are applied with a corresponding force and of which one braking member (35) is seated on the shaft (25) of the tensioning wheel (14) while the other braking means (37) is rigidly mounted.
  7. A device according to one of Claims 1 to 6, characterised in that the tensioning wheel is a slotted wheel (14) with at least one slot (14a, 14b) intended for insertion of the encircling band (3).
  8. A device according to one of Claims 1 to 7, characterised in that the upper welding jaw (9) is constructed as a clamping means which can be raised and lowered, the lower welding jaw (10) being capable of being driven in a reciprocating fashion.
  9. A device according to Claim 1 or 8, characterised in that one and preferably the bottom welding jaw (10) can be driven crosswise to the longitudinal direction of the strip and in that the separating means (12) has a cutter adapted for joint movement in synchronism with this welding jaw (10).
