Abstract

The closure unit can be manufactured in a single deep-drawing operation. During the course of a predetermined stroke of the single deep-drawing operation, such as the downward stroke up to a lower dead-center position, a blank is punched out, a ring or marginal rim and a collar are formed, a central opening is punched out and a section extending peripherally to the cut edge is downwardly extended. During the upward stroke predetermined sections of the extended collar are rolled and subsequently squeezed together.

Description

The present invention relates to a closure unit made of sheet metal for sterilisable containers according to the preamble of patent claim 1.

The invention further relates to a method for producing a closure unit from sheet metal according to the preamble of patent claim 6.

The present invention also relates to a container with a closure unit made of sheet metal.

Closure units of the type mentioned with a membrane that spans the container opening and can be peeled off from the retaining ring of the closure unit are used on containers for packaging food and technical products.

Such a closure unit with a cover ring for a tin can made of coated aluminum or tinplate is known from US Pat. No. 4,253,584. To protect the unprotected cut edge exposed by punching out the pouring opening, it is folded upwards and outwards into the sealing plane for the membrane. The unprotected cutting edge is now outside the product and cannot contaminate it. Protection against corrosion external influences, e.g. when filling the container or due to moisture in the air, are not guaranteed.

To increase the strength of the sealing edge formed along the pouring opening, a hollow bead is formed along the opening through the folded cutting edge. However, this hollow edge bead means that when the membrane is sealed onto the opening, the sealing can only take place on the narrow ring surface located outside the hollow bead with the necessary high sealing pressure; In the area of the hollow bead, the sealing surface and the membrane to be sealed cannot be pressed against one another to a sufficient extent, so that a secure closure suitable for sterilization is created.

This known cover ring has the further disadvantage that when the ring is flanged onto a container edge, the membrane, which is usually a few hundredths of a millimeter thick, and in particular the tear-open tab that is placed against the center on the surface of the membrane, can be damaged to such an extent by the relative movement of the pressure plate of the flanging machine at the beginning of the flanging process that the membrane cannot be torn open afterwards.

From the English patent application 2166409, a closure unit is also known which, similar to the American one mentioned above, has a hollow rim in the area of the opening, which, when the membrane is sealed, also prevents the membrane from being able to be connected to the cover ring in a sterilization-proof manner on the entire sealing surface.

To prevent the tear-open tab from being damaged by the pressure of the flanging machine, the flap is folded twice so that at most one layer is damaged by the flanging machine and the one underneath can survive the flanging process undamaged.

A sealing unit for packaging containers is also known from Swiss patent specification 563 284, in which the membrane is sealed onto the cut edge of the container opening which is folded upwards and outwards. By opening the container Arranged in the central part of the closure unit and arranged at a distance from its edge to be connected to the can, the tear-open tab can be prevented from being damaged when the lid is opened. The cut edge, however, is not protected against corrosion.

Containers with a discharge opening that does not span the entire cross-section of the container are not suitable for packaging food, in particular they are unusable for packaging food that is not pourable but is dimensionally stable.

From European patent application 0090957 a closure lid for sterilizable cans is also known, in which the cut edge of the opening is also folded upwards and outwards into the plane of the sealing surface. The sealing surface is not only formed by the folded section, but the region of the end surface lying outside the cut edge is deformed by deep drawing in such a way that its surface comes to lie in the plane of the folded cut edge, thereby increasing the sealing surface.

This closure cover also has the disadvantage that the pull tab can be damaged by the pressure plate of the flanging machine. In addition, the two-part sealing surface means that both sides of the container must be coated with a sealable lacquer.

Hier will die Erfindung Abhilfe schaffen. The invention seeks to remedy this.

The invention, as characterized in claims 1 to 5, solves the problem of creating a closure unit made of sheet metal for sterilizable containers, in which the unprotected cut edge of the opening can neither corrode by the filling material nor by external influences, and in which the cross section the usable pouring opening through the sealing surface is reduced essentially only by the amount of the sealing surface. Another object of the invention is to design the closure unit in such a way that the tear-open tab on the membrane cannot be damaged by the rotating pressure plate of the flanging machine.

The invention, as characterized in claims 6 to 9, also solves the problem of creating a method with which a closure unit with a protected cutting edge can be produced.

Surprisingly, with the closure unit according to the invention, it is possible to achieve perfect protection of the cut edge against both internal and external influences without the need for an additional corrosion-resistant coating. At the same time, it is possible to make essentially the entire ring surface usable as a sealing surface, since there is no rolled edge preventing proper sealing. The three sections, which abut one another and, depending on the type of coating, are glued to one another form a dimensionally stable, essentially 100% usable sealing surface for the sealing membrane.

The raised peripheral apex of the fold area of the two upper sections prevents damage to the tear-open tab lying on the membrane without hindering the flanging process on conventional machines. The raised fold area also ensures simple, precise centering of the membrane before sealing and prevents it from being accidentally sealed onto the collar-shaped part of the closure unit. This creates a perfect prerequisite for a safe detachment of the membrane.

The method according to the invention enables the closure unit to be produced in a single deep-drawing stroke which includes all the deformations and cuts.

The closure unit 1 has a retaining ring 3 that can be flanged onto a container edge 2 and an annular surface 5 for sealing a closure membrane 7. In FIG. 1, the retaining ring 3 has a shape like that for the production of a flange connection with the flange edge 2 of a container 11 shown in broken lines. In the case of containers made of aluminum, plastic, paper or a composite of different materials, the edge 3 of the retaining ring can have a shape which differs from the shape shown in the figures. A tear tab 13 is attached to the membrane 7 and has been bent upwards and folded over onto the surface of the membrane 7.

Above the annular surface 5, which is used to seal the membrane 7, the rotating pressure plate 15 of a flanging machine is also shown in broken lines.

The cut edge 17, formed during the punching out of the central part of the closure unit 1 to form a removal or pouring opening 19, is protected between the sections 21, 23 of the closure unit 1. The sections 21, 23 and the section 25 adjoining the cut edge become as explained in detail later, produced by rolling in the radially outer region 10 of the closure unit 1 adjoining the cutting edge 17 and by subsequently compressing it. After compression, the three sections 21, 23, 25 lie parallel to one another and in contact with one another, as can be seen in FIG.

The peripheral folding or folding area 27 of the sections 23 and 27 is bent upwards in such a way that the apex S is higher by the amount b than the surface of the section 23 forming the annular surface 5. The distance b is larger than that double thickness 2s of the sealing membrane 7.

A possible production route for the closure unit 1 is explained below with reference to FIGS. 2 to 7. The blanks for the closure unit 1 are punched out from a sheet metal strip 4 or from a sheet metal plate and then provided with a flanged edge 3 by deep drawing, each of which can be designed according to the shape of the edge 2 of the container 11 accordingly.

In a second step, a rondelle 9 is punched out to form the central cutout opening 19 (FIG. 3) and the peripheral section 10 is folded down in a cylindrical manner. The cylindrical section 10 is then rolled in until the cutting edge 17 comes into contact with the collar 6 below the flanged edge 3 and is passed in a spiral along the now completely closed bead 18 until the bead 18 has an overlap of approximately half (in broken lines in FIG. 6). The bead 18 is now squeezed together until the three sections 21, 25, 23 lie flat and well on top of one another. The deformation steps according to FIGS. 2 to 5 take place on the way of the tool to the bottom dead center; the deformation steps according to Figures 6 and 7 during the upward stroke.

Preferably, the deformation or squeezing tool 22 does not reach all the way to the collar or section 6 on the retaining ring 3, so that the peripheral fold 27 is folded up between the sections 23 and 25 and the vertex S thereof by the amount b above the surface of the sealing surface forming the Section 25 comes to rest.

The retaining ring 2 can be made of aluminum, white or TFS (Tin Free Steel) sheet. The outside (in FIG. 2 above) has, if necessary, a protective layer against corrosion from the environmental conditions made of polypropylene film or another protective lacquer. Compatibility with the contents does not have to be checked, since the outer coating cannot come into contact with the contents at any point.

The inside (bottom in FIG. 2) preferably has a sealable coating, since it has to form the adhesive or sealing surface for the membrane 7 and, if this is made of plastic, a sealing function instead of a separately injected one even when the closure unit is flared Componds 20 takes over.

As coatings e.g. Polypropylene, a plastic film or another sealable lacquer can be used.
