This permits the salvaging of the 55 greater portion of the container when the frangible disc is accidentally ruptured.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the construction of the can top differs slightly from that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The portion I51) of the can top is extending inwardly at right angles to the friction wall ll thereof and an annular recess Ila is formed therein which is spaced inwardly from said friction wall. The recess Ila is adapted to receive a sealing compound lfia and a portion of the carrier ring 3 is shaped as indicated at l8a to conform tothe recess and contact with the sealing material for establishing an hermetic seal between the retainer ring and the container top.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the can top 9 is formed with a recess ill) for receiving the sealing compound located between the vertical friction wall H and the can body. The friction wall I9 of the carrier ring has a portion 1% which extends laterally from the upper end thereof and overlies the recess l'lb. This portion of the carrier ring is shaped so as to contact with and compress the sealing material within the recess, thus establishing a tight seal. The outer peripheral edge lee of the carrier ring is dimensioned so as to have frictional engagement with the vertical wall 912 of the can top, thus firmly securing the carrier ring to the can top and in contact with the sealing material. By the construction shown in this modified form of the invention, the clamping members for the frangible sealing are brought closer to the friction wall H of the can top and therefore a larger opening may be provided in a can of standard dimensions.
When it is desired to open the container, the friction closure is pried out and the frangible sealing disc is cut away by a knife or other sharp instrument. The friction closure may be used for reclosing the container after the inner seal has been removed. If a customer when purchasing the container finds the inner seal ruptured, it is an indication that the container nas been tampered with and possibly some of the contents removed, or replaced with a substitute, or diluted. Furthermore, while a friction plug closure forms a fairly tight seal, the use of a frangible metal seal in the construction as described produces an hermetically sealed package.
From the above, it will be apparent that a container of the friction closure type has been devised wherein an hermetic seal hasbeen established and wherein a carrier member and sealing disc have been formed as a unit which may be replaced should the frangible seal become ruptured during the manufacture of the can, thus saving the necessity of scrapping the remainder of the container.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
A metal container comprising a body portion having a can top secured thereto, said can top having a central opening and a vertical friction wall surrounding said opening, said can top having an inwardly projecting ledge at the lower end of said vertical friction wall shaped so as to provide a retaining recess for a sealing material, a, carrier ring frictionally engaging the lower portion of said vertical friction wall of the can top and held thereto in contact with the sealing material in said recess, the upper portion of said vertical wall being adapted to receive a friction plug, said carrier ring having a portion thereof extending inwardly beyond the inner edge of said ledge, a frangible sealing disk for closing the opening in said ring, the inwardly projecting portion of said ring being shaped so as to provide a recess for a sealing material and so as to clamp the peripheral edge of the sealing disk against the sealing material in said recess.
