Definitions
- the invention relates to a thermal ribbon, in particular thermocarbon ribbon, with a conventional carrier, a layer of a melting ink formed on one side of the carrier and a further layer arranged between the carrier and the melting ink, which contains a hydrophilic organic substance and which has a stronger adhesion to the carrier than to the melting color.
- Thermal ribbons have been known for a long time. They point to a film-like carrier; for example made of paper, a plastic or the like, a melting color, in particular in the form of a plastic and / or wax-bound dye or soot layer.
- the melting ink is melted by means of a thermal print head and transferred to a recording paper or a printing paper.
- Thermal printers or thermal print heads that are used for this process are e.g. known from DE-B-2 062 494 and 2 406 613 and DE-A-3 224 445. In particular, e.g. as follows: on the thermal print head of the printer, a letter consisting of heated dots and to be printed on a paper sheet is formed.
- the thermal print head presses the thermal ribbon onto the paper to be written on.
- the heated letter of the thermal print head at a temperature of about 400 ° C leads to the fact that the melting ink is melted at the heated point and transferred to the paper sheet.
- the used part of the thermal ribbon is fed to a spool.
- the thermal ribbon can have different melting colors next to each other. With the combination of the three basic colors blue, yellow and red colored print images can thus be produced. Compared to the usual color photography, there is no disadvantageous development and fixing. Thermal printers can be operated at a high writing speed (a DIN A4 sheet can be printed in about 10 s) and without annoying background noises.
- thermal ribbons described above there are also those in which the heat symbol is not generated by a thermal print head, but by resistance heating of a specially designed film-like carrier.
- the melting ink which is the actual "functional layer” during the printing process, contains the materials already described above.
- EMR Electro Thermal Ribbon
- a corresponding thermal transfer printing system is described, for example, in US Pat. No. 4,309,117.
- JP-A-60-236788 a thermal ink ribbon is known which has an intermediate layer between the layer of the melting ink and the support.
- the intermediate layer has a stronger adhesion to the carrier than to the melting ink, even in the molten state.
- the known intermediate layer consists of an acrylic resin. Acrylic resins belong to the thermoplastics (cf. Römpps Chemie-Lexikon, 8th edition, 1979, vol. 1, p. 55).
- JP-A-59-165690 discloses a thermal ink ribbon with an intermediate layer, which consists of a cellulose derivative, namely cellulose esters. Cellulose esters are meltable.
- the invention has for its object to develop a thermal ribbon of the type described so that the gloss of the printed symbols or characters is noticeably reduced.
- This object is achieved in a development of the known thermal ink ribbon at the outset in that the hydrophilic organic substance is not meltable during the thermal printing process.
- Intermediate layers are known in thermal ink ribbons, for example from US-A-4617 224 and DE-A-36 34 049.
- the intermediate layers described in these publications are intended to serve an improved multiuse or enable improved writing on rough paper.
- An essential feature of the thermal ribbon according to the invention is a hydrophilic organic substance which cannot be melted in the thermal printing process and which is regularly a polymeric substance which has a stronger adhesion to the support than to the melted melting ink during the thermal printing process.
- This layer of the organic substance which preferably has a thickness of 0.05 to 0.5 micrometers, in particular 0.1 to 0.3 micrometers, remains adhering to the carrier of the thermal ink ribbon or the thermocarbon ribbon during use. This requirement of the invention would not be met if this additional intermediate layer were hydrophobic or lipophilic. There are compounds that are both hydrophilic and lipophilic.
- hydrophilic character or part is sufficient, on the one hand, to ensure greater adhesion when printed on the support and, on the other hand, to achieve the desired effects.
- Water-soluble starch and cellulose derivatives such as in particular with methyl cellulose, carboxymethylellulose and / or hydroxymethyl starch, and water-soluble polymers in the form of polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acrylates and / or methacrylates, and water-soluble melamine resins, in particular, have proven to be particularly suitable organic substances of a hydrophilic character Form of a melamine-formaldehyde precondensate.
- melamine resins are particularly suitable, in particular melamine-formaldehyde precondensates.
- the above substances are preferably applied to the support of the thermal ink ribbon in aqueous solution or dispersion using customary application techniques, for example using a doctor blade.
- the water is then evaporated at an elevated temperature, preferably at a temperature of 80 to 100 ° C.
- the melting ink is then applied to this composite material using known technologies.
- aminoplast precondensates Particular representatives of these compounds, which are also referred to as “aminoplast precondensates”, are urea-formaldehyde precondensates, the term “urea” being largely understood. Suitable ureas include z. B. urea itself, thiourea, melamine, guranidine, N-alkylurea and the like. Typical aminoplast precondensates include, in particular, monomethylol urea, Dimethylol urea and / or water-soluble low molecular weight urea-formaldehyde condensation products made from monomethylol urea, dimethylol urea, urea or formaldehyde.
- the specific melamine compounds of this type include the polymeric methylolmelamine and the polymeric methylated methylolmelamine, each of low molecular weight.
- a monomer of the above starting compound in particular methylolmelamine or the methylated methylolamine, to the support in an aqueous medium, so that partial condensation ensues at elevated temperature when the water is evaporated, which causes the desirable chemical characteristic of the intermediate layer.
- partially saponified melamine resin (trademark Madurit® MW 815 from Hoechst AG), methyl cellulose (Thylose® MH 200K from Hoechst AG) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (Luviskol® K30 from BASF AG ).
- the effect sought according to the invention can be further improved by adding pigments to the organic substance or its dispersion before application to the carrier in such proportions that the layer of the organic substance is roughened on the surface, the surface roughening being on the side of the layer Melting paint favors the desired effect.
- the pigments such as powdery silicon dioxide, preferably make up 5 to 25% by weight of the infusible organic substance of the intermediate layer.
- the effects which can be achieved with the invention can easily be determined by means of a reflectometer as an aid for gloss assessment according to DIN-67 530.
- a standard material with a gloss value of 100% is determined and for this purpose, expressed as a percentage, the gloss value is determined, which is obtained when the melting color of the respective thermal ink ribbon designed according to the invention is printed on paper. It is therefore a relative gloss value.
- the voltage which has been imposed on the thermal printer and which is a measure of the thermal pressure energy introduced is defined as a further coordinate. With conventional thermal ribbons, the curve profile shown in the following FIG. 1 is established (dotted line).
- a thermal ink ribbon was produced in which the melting ink contained 15% by weight of ester wax, 50% by weight of paraffin, 20% by weight of ethylene vinyl acetate and 10% by weight of carbon black.
- the carrier consisted of a polyester.
- the intermediate layer had the following composition: 1.4% by weight, partially saponified melamine resin (trademark Madurit MW® 815 / sold by Hoechst AG), 2.0% by weight of an acrylate dispersion (Mowilith® VDM 7830, approx.
- Example 2 Compared to the information in Example 1, the formulation of the intermediate layer was only changed. This consisted of 90% by weight of water, 10% by weight of methyl cellulose (Tylose® MH 200K / sold by Hoechst AG).
- Example 2 Compared to Example 1, only the material of the intermediate layer was changed. It consisted of 90% by weight of water and 10% by weight of polyvinlypyrrolidone (Luwiskol® K30 / sold by BASF AG).
