Definitions

  • the invention relates to an illuminated display unit according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • Such a display unit is known from DE-OS 33 22 393.
  • light-emitting diodes are inserted from the narrow edges into a diffusing screen in order to introduce the light as completely as possible into it. From Fig. 1 it can be concluded that a symbol is hereby illuminated from behind, so that a contrast arises.
  • the luminous efficacy is, however, very low, so that this arrangement is not suitable, for example, for larger display areas.
  • the known display units overall have the disadvantage of a relatively high power requirement, so that a large number of solar cells and a large storage capacity are required when operating with solar cells.
  • the invention is therefore based on the object of an illuminated display unit of the type mentioned To develop, which ensures a more uniform lighting and larger display areas with improved light output.
  • the invention is based on the consideration that light from a fluorescent light guide plate can essentially only emerge at contact points or cut edges. Since all the lateral boundary edges are provided with a reflective layer, the light cannot escape there, but is reflected back into the plate. The light can thus only emerge at the point at which the display symbols or their negatives are attached, namely on the rear surface of the light guide plate. These points are thus illuminated very intensively from all sides by the light distributed in the light guide plate and are therefore very well visible through the light guide plate, which is further improved by the contrast surface arranged behind it. Since all of the light is concentrated on these areas with almost no loss, the light output is very good. In contrast, for example, to the arrangements known from DE-OS 36 02 819 or US Pat. No.
  • the display symbols or their negatives can be inexpensively designed as tight-fitting foils that are glued to the back of the light guide plate to achieve the closest possible contact or are designed as adhesive foils. However, they can also be formed as a vapor-deposited coating or molded, in particular milled, into the light guide plate.
  • At least one inclined side wall of the housing and / or the reflective layer on the front surface of the light guide plate and / or the contrast surface is expediently provided with solar cells.
  • the solar cells are illuminated through the light guide plate, for which solar cells are particularly suitable for diffuse light.
  • the housing has a rechargeable battery, to which a charging device operated by the solar cell is assigned.
  • the display unit is expediently provided with a twilight switch which only switches on the lighting elements below a predeterminable external brightness.
  • the display surface is formed by a rectangular, fluorescent light guide plate 10, for example 8 mm thick.
  • Such light guide plates usually consist of clear plastic, which is colored with fluorescent dye or mixed with fluorescent particles.
  • Such light guide plates have the property of emitting absorbed light again by fluorescence. The fluorescence radiation is guided to the boundary edges by total reflection and radiated there in a concentrated manner, unless measures to prevent this are provided. In addition, light is emitted at those points where other bodies come into close contact with the light guide plate.
  • five light-emitting diodes 11 are arranged at corresponding intervals substantially in corresponding recesses in the light guide plate 10.
  • the number of LEDs used is of course arbitrary and depends on the desired brightness. In general, a single light emitting diode, for. B. sufficient for a house number if the arrangement described below is provided.
  • the remaining boundary edges can of course also be provided with embedded light-emitting diodes. This is particularly useful with very large light guide plates.
  • a reflective layer 12 In the simplest case, this can consist of an aluminum foil, but it can also be mirrored by coating or vapor deposition. In any case, it proves advantageous to smooth the boundary edges very well, preferably to polish them, before applying the reflective layer 12, so that there is close contact with the reflective layer 12 and good reflectivity.
  • the front and the back of the light guide plate 10 are provided in the region of the light-emitting diodes 1 with a strip-shaped reflective layer 13 in order to prevent direct light emission. This reflecting layer 13 has such an extent that the total reflection on the front and back is retained.
  • the numbers 5 and 3 are applied as display symbols 14. These can either be designed as adhesive films or glued in the form of films. It is essential that there is a very intimate contact with the light guide plate 10, which allows light to escape at the contact points.
  • the display symbols 14 can also be generated by coating, in particular by vapor deposition.
  • the display symbols 14 preferably have a light color so that the light emerging there is absorbed as little as possible.
  • the display symbols illuminated in this way are clearly visible through the transparent light guide plate 10.
  • it is also possible to generate a negative of these display symbols that is to say that the entire rear side of the light guide plate 10 is included provided a close-fitting layer from which only the digits, letters or the like are left blank.
  • the light guide plate 10 is inserted into a box-shaped housing 15, the front wall being formed by the light guide plate 10 itself and the rear wall 16 being a contrast surface at a distance from it.
  • the light guide plate can also be arranged only in the front area of a housing-like display unit and can still be covered by a transparent wall to protect the light guide plate, the cover also being able to extend to the sides.
  • the contrast surface is expediently colored dark, while in the case of display symbols designed as negatives the contrast surface is colored light.
  • An inclined solar cell unit 17 is arranged on the top of the housing 15, a favorable inclination angle, for example, depending on the geographic location, being 70 °.
  • a rechargeable battery 19 and a charging device 20 are arranged in the space 18 formed between the solar cell unit 17 and the housing 15. These can of course also be arranged in the housing 15 and colored according to the contrast surface or provided with a corresponding cover.
  • the reflective layer 13 On the front surface of the light guide plate.
  • Another favorable location is the contrast surface, that is to say the rear wall 16 in the interior of the housing 15.
  • solar cells suitable for diffuse light are preferably used. The light can reach the solar cells through the transparent light guide plate 10. If the light output is sufficient, the inclined solar cell unit 17 can also be omitted.
  • the display symbols can also be molded, in particular milled, into the light guide plate.
  • the light can emerge from the resulting oblique edges, as a result of which the corresponding display symbols 14 appear brightly.
  • the electrical energy generated in the solar cell unit 17 is supplied to the rechargeable battery 19 for energy storage via the charging device 20, which is designed, for example, as a constant current source. This ensures a constant charging current to protect the battery.
  • the charging device 20 can also be provided with a voltage converter.
  • the battery 19 is connected to the five light-emitting diodes 11 via a twilight switch 21. During the day, this twilight switch 21 is open, so that the battery 19 can be charged without removing current. Only below a predeterminable external brightness, e.g. B.
  • this twilight switch 21 closes, and the LEDs 11 are fed by the battery 19.
  • the current generated by the solar cell unit 17 can be supplied to a threshold device, the light-emitting diodes 11 or a single light-emitting diode being switched on when the value falls below a predefinable threshold value.
  • the twilight switch 21 can also be omitted, or it can be replaced, for example, by a manually operated switch.
  • the light emitting diodes 11 can also be operated in a conventional manner via Low voltage line can be fed from the outside. Since the energy requirement of this display unit is extremely low, the LEDs can then remain switched on at all times, so that switching devices can be dispensed with.
  • the light guide plate 10 can of course also have a different shape, z. B. be round, oval or triangular.
