Definitions
- the present invention relates to a watch case comprising a middle part, a bezel and a base for receiving a movement surmounted by a dial.
- Document US-A 380 869 describes a pocket watch whose box is surrounded by an envelope made of leather in order to protect the box for example from scratches.
- Document CA-A 1 029 571 describes a wristwatch whose case is protected by a leather cap. None of these documents uses leather as part of the watch case, this part can be the middle, the bezel or the dial.
- Patent CH-A 129 046 describes a box comprising at least one non-metallic decorative wall lamp offering the appearance of natural reptile skin or imitated from leather primed so as to give it the appearance and the design of a real reptile skin.
- the cited document suggests the deposition of such a coating by any process on any part of the box, for example by gluing or crimping, either on the outer face of the back or of the middle part, or even on the bezel.
- the utility model DE-U 1 973 982 envisages coating the dial of a clock with leather, skin or fabric.
- the present invention overcomes these drawbacks by proposing a watch case where at least one element of the group of elements comprising the middle part, the bezel and the dial is made of leather and methods for the manufacture of such elements.
- the object of the invention relating to a watch case of which at least one of its constituent parts is made of solid leather, it is useful to define here what is meant by the word leather.
- leather any animal skin separated from the flesh, tanned and prepared. This is how we can use to satisfy said invention, beef, buffalo, cow, calf (box-calf, vellum), goat (morocco), sheep (sheepskin, romance) or reptiles (crocodile, lizard).
- the leather used can also come in two forms: natural leather and bonded leather.
- natural leather is meant that taken from the animal, tanned, prepared and used in its natural state.
- the thickness of this leather will be sufficient to manufacture in a single layer the constituent part of the box which it is proposed to make.
- a single layer of buffalo leather for example, could in some circumstances constitute a watch bezel.
- reconstituted leather means the use of powders, granules, filaments or waste leather which is compressed with a binder.
- powders, granules, filaments or waste leather which is compressed with a binder.
- Figure 1 is a section in a watch whose case includes a middle-bezel and a dial made of a piece of solid leather, according to a first embodiment of the invention, where the box 1 comprises a part 2 made in natural or bonded solid leather.
- This piece which is in one piece, comprises a ring forming an outer middle part 3 of the box and a bezel 7 made in one piece with the middle part.
- a veil 4 also made in one piece with the middle-bezel, closes the ring and the upper face 5 of the voile 4 acts as a dial.
- the part 2 defines a circular central housing 6 which is here coaxial with the external shape of the middle part 3.
- the latter has a semi-toroidal periphery.
- the middle part 3 and the location of the housing 6 are not decisive and are only controlled by the aesthetics which one wishes to give to the timepiece, the housing 6 being able to be off-center with respect to the general shape of the middle part 3 in leather which, itself, can take extremely varied external shapes.
- the face of the veil 4 forming the dial 5 is concave while it is bordered by the bezel 7.
- This bezel 7 defines, by its shape, means 8 for positioning and fixing a lens 9.
- these means comprise an annular step 10 delimiting a shoulder 11 on which the glass 9 can be applied by means of an adhesive joint.
- the glass 9 is therefore embedded in the height of the telescope 7.
- the veil 4 is pierced in its center with a hole 12 for the passage of the needles axes 13 and 14.
- its central zone includes a stiffening portion 15 to stiffen the veil at this location.
- a metal inner middle part 16 is disposed in the housing 6.
- This middle part has an annular ring 17a from which the flange 17b extends inwards and it is glued to the outer middle part 3 by adhesive joints interposed between the walls. respective outer and inner peripherals of the middle and also (although this is not essential) between the upper end face of the inner middle 16 and the corresponding lower surface portion of the web 4.
- the inner middle part 16 is first of all intended to receive the movement 18 of the timepiece via a casing ring 19.
- the movement 18 is assumed to be of the barrel type , the casing ring 19 thus having no constant radial section over its entire periphery, which can be seen on the left and on the right in the figure.
- the casing circle has a shoulder 20 cooperating with a flange practiced in a conventional manner around the periphery of the movement.
- An annular groove 21 is formed in the underside of the inner middle part to receive a gasket 22. Furthermore, several tapped holes 23 are provided in the middle part to allow its assembly with a bottom 24, by means of screw 25.
- the bottom 24 is formed by a circular plate whose shape is adapted to the aesthetics of the assembly and which adjusts almost entirely in the opening of the housing 6. This plate carries horns 26 at noon and at six o'clock, intended to fix a bracelet not shown in the drawing.
- the timepiece requires for its sealing only a seal at the bottom acting effectively in contact with the metal, the lining being furthermore trapped on all sides by the rectangular section delimited by the bottom and the groove 21.
- a time-setting rod 27 passes through a radial hole 28 drilled in the outer middle part 3 as well as a radial hole 29 made in the inner middle part 16.
- the rod 27 is provided with a groove 30 intended to receive a seal 31.
- a crown 32 allows the rod 27 to be maneuvered.
- the crown 32 can be made of leather like part 2.
- the annular part 2 comprising the outer middle part 3, the bezel 7 and the dial 5 with its veil 4, all made of one piece of solid leather, one or the other of the following methods can be used.
- a first method consists in taking a blank in natural leather whose dimensions of diameter and thickness are slightly greater than the dimensions of the product which it is proposed to obtain.
- the blank is dried to remove any water it may contain.
- An organic impregnation material is allowed to penetrate into its porous structure and is allowed to harden.
- the hardness of the blank is much higher than the hardness of rawhide, which allows the blank to be machined to the dimensions required by the design of the box that is to be produced, using tools ordinary cutting (turning, milling, etc.).
- the part can be finished by a finishing operation.
- the finishing operation consists in giving the workpiece an elegant appearance. It could be sanding that could give it the appearance of deerskin. It could still be a surface impregnation with or without additional coloring. Finally, it could be a decoration in the form of a coating, for example the bonding of a selected thin skin on the dial.
- a second blank will be used which will be stuck on the first after having carried out the impregnation operation on each of the blanks. It is also possible to bond the blanks together during the impregnation operation, the impregnation material simultaneously serving as bonding material between blanks.
- the impregnation material may be a hot or cold hardenable resin. This material could also contain a dye which would allow the leather to be dyed in the mass and in a color other than that which is natural to it.
- a second method consists in starting from the same draft as that which was discussed above. After drying, the blank is impregnated, which is pressed and then matrixed in a mold to give it its final shape. The part is left to harden in the mold, which will give it a solid structure. After demolding, it can be subjected to a finishing operation. It will be noted that this second method could also be implemented with a blank comprising several thicknesses of leather, either pre-bonded or glued at the time of the hardening of the impregnation material.
- finishing operations may be those which have been mentioned above.
- a positive or negative relief can also be imparted to the surface of the part, such as the printing of an hour index on the dial for example
- FIG. 2 shows a second embodiment of the box according to the invention, where the leather part of said box is a telescope 30.
- the middle-bezel are subject to tightly sealed to this middle-bezel, a bottom 31 and a crystal 32.
- a movement 33 with its dial 34 is fixed inside the box by conventional means and not shown.
- the middle-bezel 30 is manufactured according to one of the two methods described above.
- Figure 3 shows a third embodiment of the box according to the invention.
- the middle 40 and the bezel 41 are made of leather and come in two parts separated by a dial 42 sandwiched between said middle and bezel.
- a dial 42 sandwiched between said middle and bezel.
- One of the two manufacturing methods described above is used to separately manufacture the bezel and the middle part which is then assembled by gluing for example.
- the dial is preferably made of metal.
- the bezel 41 could be made of natural leather and the middle 40 of bonded leather, this to give the case a particular appearance and also to make it cheaper.
- FIG. 3 also shows that the dial 42 carries means for fixing a bracelet in the form of ears 43, these ears being made integrally with the dial.
- the dial 42 could, in this embodiment, be completely trapped between the bezel and the middle without leaving visible edges outside the periphery of the watch, except the edges which carry the ears 43. For aesthetic reasons, however, the dial 42 could be flush with the entire outer periphery of the middle part 40. In this case, the edge thus made visible could be coated with a decorative layer, such as gold for example.
- Figure 4 is a variant of the embodiment shown in Figure 3.
- the bezel 41 and the middle 40 are always in two pieces of leather separated by the dial 42.
- the fastening means 45 of a strap are carried by a insert 44 housed in the middle part 40. It can be seen that the insert is also used as a support for the movement 33.
- Figure 5 shows a fourth embodiment of the invention.
- the box here comprises only one piece of leather: the bezel 51 manufactured according to one of the methods described above.
- the bezel is glued to a middle part 52 made of a material other than leather, steel for example.
- the middle carries means 53 for attaching a bracelet.
