Definitions
- the invention relates to a contact element for electrical switch contacts, in particular a contact tongue for electromagnetic relays, a two-layer contact pad being galvanically applied to a base made of base metal and at least one of the layers containing palladium.
- a contact element in which a silver layer and a rhodium layer are applied over a nickel layer. Such contact surfaces have a low tendency to cold sweat.
- the same document also describes the use of gold contact layers with a rhodium coating as known. In general, however, previously known multilayer coatings made of precious metals are either relatively expensive or can only be used in a limited range.
- palladium for switch contacts is also known (electronics 15/1981, pages 53 to 61). Galvanic palladium layers of 1 to 2 ⁇ m are described as particularly abrasion-resistant. It is also pointed out that layers of palladium are mostly covered with a layer of gold. Such layers of pure precious metals, such as palladium and gold, are very expensive. In addition, alloys of palladium for contact purposes, for example PdCu or AgPd30, are only known in the form of contact profiles, which cannot be used in all cases because of their material thickness. In addition, such contact profiles with high proportions of precious metals are also expensive.
- the object of the invention is to provide a switching contact of the type mentioned at the outset, which has the smallest possible proportion of expensive precious metals, but can be used over the widest possible range of switching powers.
- the contact should therefore be reliable and can be used with a long service life both with very small and with very high switching currents and switching voltages.
- this object is achieved with a contact element of the type mentioned at the outset in that the inner layer has a thickness of 3 to 5 ⁇ m and is formed from an alloy of palladium and an additional component, the additional component accounting for a proportion of 10 to 50% by weight.
- the inner layer has a thickness of 3 to 5 ⁇ m and is formed from an alloy of palladium and an additional component, the additional component accounting for a proportion of 10 to 50% by weight.
- the outer layer has a thickness of 0.1 to 1 microns and an alloy of palladium-silver or palladium-gold with a silver or gold content of 10 to 40% by weight is formed.
- the contact element according to the invention thus has a two-layer contact surface with two different palladium alloys, the base layer or load layer being formed from an alloy of palladium and a base metal, while the outer conductive layer is formed from an alloy of palladium and a further noble metal to a much smaller thickness .
- the individual contact layers can be applied in the specified, relatively small layer thicknesses with good quality, so that the total consumption of precious metal, in particular that of gold, is relatively low.
- switching currents from a few ⁇ A to about 5 A and switching voltages from a few ⁇ V to about 150 V can be operated correctly and with a large number of switching cycles.
- the inner layer is expediently designed as a Pd-Ni layer with a Ni content of 10 to 50%, preferably of 20 to 30%; In another expedient form of application, the inner layer is designed as Pd-Co with a Co content of 10 to 40%, preferably about 25%.
- a further embodiment contains an inner layer made of a Pd-Cu layer with a Cu content of 10 to 40% by weight, preferably approximately 20% by weight.
- three-material alloys are also suitable for the inner contact layer, for example Pd-Ni-Cu with 10 to 40% by weight Ni-Cu, preferably 20% by weight Ni + 5% by weight Cu.
- these three-component alloys can also contain proportions of tungsten or molybdenum.
- a Pd-Ni-W alloy with 10 to 40% by weight Ni + W, preferably about 15% Ni + 10% W or a Pd-Ni-Mo alloy with 10 to 40% by weight can be used for the inner contact layer.
- Ni + Mo preferably about 15% Ni + about 10% Mo can be used.
- a similar alloy composition can also be provided with cobalt, ie a Pd-Cu-W alloy with 10 to 40% by weight Cu + W, preferably about 15% by weight Cu + about 10% by weight W or a Pd-Cu -Mo alloy with 10 to 40% by weight Cu + Mo, preferably approximately 15% by weight Cu + approximately 10% by weight Mo.
- cobalt ie a Pd-Cu-W alloy with 10 to 40% by weight Cu + W, preferably about 15% by weight Cu + about 10% by weight W or a Pd-Cu -Mo alloy with 10 to 40% by weight Cu + Mo, preferably approximately 15% by weight Cu + approximately 10% by weight Mo.
- the outer layer or conductive layer has a thickness of between 0.1 and 1 ⁇ m, preferably a thickness of about 0.5 ⁇ m being used.
- This outer layer preferably contains about 30% silver as Pd-Ag alloy or preferably 20% gold as Pd-Au alloy.
- contact layers are applied galvanically, with selective electroplating processes preferably being used, for example under the terms nozzle electroplating or jetplating, brush electroplating and laser electroplating are known. With these methods, the contact layers are applied only where they are needed, so that a particularly economical use of the noble metals is possible in this way.

Abstract
