Definitions

  • the invention relates to a transfer printing process on solid objects made of plastic or with a surface layer made of plastic or lacquer, dyes being transferred from a heated flat ink carrier to the surface of the solid object by sublimation.
  • lacquered metal strips are printed with a flat ink carrier through a hot calender by color transfer during the joint pass.
  • the transfer printing is summarized with the coating of a solid object, in which a thermoplastic film, which is affine to the dye of the color carrier and largely prevents migration of the dye, between the surface of the object and the color carrier inserts so that when heated, the film absorbs the dye and at the same time is adhesively bonded to the surface of the plastic.
  • a transfer printing process is known from US Pat. No. 4,059,471, in which a film which is permeable for dye transfer is placed between the plastic surface to be printed and the ink carrier. After the transfer printing has been carried out, the film adheres so firmly to the ink carrier that it is separated from the printed surface together with the latter.
  • the invention has for its object to completely avoid imprints of the ink carrier on the surface or surface layer of the object during transfer printing. Furthermore, the printed surface should be protected against damage during further processing or during transport to the place of use without additional costly measures.
  • a largely permeable layer for the dye transfer of a removable material adhering to the surface or the surface layer is inserted.
  • the subliming dye easily penetrates a layer of certain materials and soaks into the surface to be printed in the same way as if the layer were not present. Suitable materials are above all those which are not very compatible with the plastic or lacquer of the surface to be printed. As a rule, a transfer dye which has a high affinity for the plastic or lacquer has a lower affinity for the different material of the intermediate layer.
  • the low compatibility means that the adhesion between the surface and the intermediate layer is so low that it can be removed easily and without residue after the transfer printing.
  • the intermediate layer protects the surface of the solid object during the transfer printing process against prints of the ink carrier and after printing, for example up to the installation of the printing object at the place of use, against damage of all kinds.
  • Transfer printing on a wide variety of varnishes and plastics is common. Transferable dyes with sufficiently high affinities for the plastics and lacquers to be printed are known.
  • DE-OS-26 42 350 describes different types of dyes and their affinity for the individual classes of plastics.
  • the plastics that can be printed well using the transfer printing process include, for example Polyesters, polyurethanes, cellulose derivatives, in particular cellulose esters, phenoplasts and aminoplasts, epoxy resins, polyamides and polycarbonates.
  • Printable varnishes also belong to these classes.
  • the intermediate layer made of the material which is largely permeable to the dye transfer then fulfills its task of avoiding imprints on the surface to be printed if it is itself sufficiently smooth or - at least under the conditions of the ink transfer - softer than the surface. Above all, it must only be so slightly incompatible with the surface to be printed that there is no firm adhesion even under the pressure and temperature conditions of the transfer printing process. As a rule, it is desirable that the layer can be removed with little force even after cooling.
  • plastics are usually used. The thinner they are, the better permeable they are for the color transfer. Preferably 10 to 200 11m thick foils are used. Polyolefin films, in particular polyethylene or polypropylene, are preferred. Other suitable plastics are polytetrafluoroethylene, diene polymers, silicone plastics, polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride.
  • the intermediate layer can be brought together with the surface to be printed and the ink carrier immediately before the color transfer printing.
  • the ink carrier can be laminated together with a polyethylene film and this composite can be placed on the surface to be printed.
  • the intermediate layer in particular a polyolefin film, is preferably connected beforehand to the surface to be printed.
  • Acrylic glass panes mostly come with a double-sided polyethylene film coating and are often processed with this protective layer into an end product. The film is usually only removed at the place of use of the finished article and retains its protective effect until this point.
  • acrylic glass panes or similar plastic panes with such a protective polyethylene coating can be subjected directly to the transfer printing process, damage to the surface and the gloss being excluded not only during this process itself, but also in the subsequent treatment steps up to the end use.
  • the film can be removed from the printed surface just as easily as before printing.
  • the ink carrier, the intermediate layer and the surface to be printed should lie as close as possible to one another, especially if image or character-like color samples are to be transferred with sharp contours. It is sufficient if the dense contact occurs during a short period of time sufficient for the color transfer.
  • the method known from EP-A-11 220 can be used, in which the layers are arranged in a short distance from one another, for example by means of appropriately spaced stenter frames, and for a short time by means of a pressurized gas which acts on the back of the ink carrier, for which Duration of the Fabtransfer be pressed tightly together.
  • the dye transfer is accomplished in a known manner by heating the dye carrier to the sublimation temperature of the dye.
  • the ink carrier can be heated by hot surfaces, for example hot press surfaces or calender rolls, or by heat radiators or hot compressed gas.
  • the plastic to be printed at least the plastic or lacquer surface, should also be heated to a temperature below the ink sublimation temperature which favors the ink transfer. In typical cases, the plastic surface to be printed, e.g.
  • an acrylic sheet laminated with polyethylene is preheated to 120 to 135 ° C and with the ink carrier, usually a printed paper web, for 1 to 10 seconds with a surface pressure of up to 20 kPa (0, 01 to 0.2 Kplcm 2 ) pressed together, the ink carrier is heated to a temperature of 150 to 300 ° C.
  • the ink carrier usually a printed paper web
