Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for the electrostatic application of liquids and solids to objects by means of a high-voltage electrode which is connected to a high-voltage generator fed from a direct-current source, the high-voltage electrode being arranged in a cup-shaped applicator for receiving the material to be applied.
- the invention is further described using the example of a flocking device designed as a hand-held device with which, for example, textile fibers are applied to surfaces provided with adhesive, without the invention being restricted to the application of flake-like materials. It is analog and equally well suited for the application of liquids, for example for spraying plants with pesticides.
- Such flocking devices as shown for example in GB-PS 20 10 126 and in US-PS 41 65 022, have the following basic structure: In a mostly tubular housing there is a high-voltage generator, consisting of an oscillator, transformer and high-voltage cascade as such is fed either from the network or from batteries or accumulators with direct current. A usually cup-shaped applicator is connected to this high-voltage generator via a screw or plug connection, which applicator receives the flocking material. A high-voltage electrode in the form of a plate is arranged in the bottom of this applicator, the corners of which can be bent up to increase the corona discharge, as is shown, for example, by EP-PS 00 44 038.
- the invention is based on the object of avoiding these disadvantages, reducing the required energy expenditure or substantially extending the service life of the batteries or accumulators in battery-operated and battery-operated devices, achieving a more uniform application to the object to be coated and the Avoid or at least reduce ozone formation.
- the high-voltage electrode is designed as an ellipsoid of revolution, is connected via an electrically conductive member to the bottom of the applicator and the high-voltage generator and between the high-voltage electrode and the side wall or walls and the bottom there is a free space between the applicator.
- ellipsoid of revolution is to be understood broadly and essentially means that the high-voltage electrode has a self-contained rounded shape, in which corners and edges are avoided. It can be egg-shaped and pear-shaped.
- Particularly preferred is the exceptional form of the ellipsoid of revolution, namely the sphere, i.e. a shape in which all axes passing through the center are equidistant from the outer surface.
- the high-voltage electrode is advantageously designed as a hollow body, so that its weight can be reduced considerably.
- the high voltage electrode can be made of metal in the usual way.
- High-voltage electrode formation is particularly preferred, in which the rotational ellipsoid consists of plastic, which is made conductive in a suitable form, because it can further save weight.
- the high-voltage electrode according to the invention has a free distance both from the side wall (s) and from the bottom of the applicator. It preferably maintains approximately the same distance from the side walls and the distance to the bottom of the applicator is selected so that an optimal loading of the flocked material is ensured is accomplished. This is preferably achieved when the high-voltage electrode is at a greater distance from the bottom of the applicator than from the upper edge of the applicator.
- a spherical high-voltage electrode takes up approximately one third of the diameter of the applicator.
- a particularly preferred form of the high-voltage electrode is that it is electrically connected to the bottom of the applicator via a spiral spring.
- the spiral spring creates the preferred distance from the high-voltage electrode from the bottom of the applicator, and on the other hand causes a wobble movement, which causes the flocked material to be whirled up.
- the high-voltage electrode tilts as a result of the force of gravity of the lower side wall of the applicator, and thus the coating material flowing in later is charged in a particularly preferred manner and transported to the object to be coated.
- the formation of the electrically conductive member as a spring preferably as a spiral spring, has the further advantage that the high-voltage electrode always springs back into its starting position and thus does not come to rest on the side wall or sides of the applicator.
- the applicator is preferably compared to the housing that the High-voltage generator receives, bent at right angles, so that in each case coating material flows into the lower half of the applicator and thus a largely complete use is effected.
- the uniform distribution of the flocking material can be improved in an advantageous manner in that the high-voltage electrode carries agitator blades. These are preferably oriented obliquely downwards towards the bottom of the applicator.
- the inventive design of the high-voltage electrode as an ellipsoid of revolution, preferably as a ball, has the advantage that a very substantial energy saving is possible or the life of the DC power source in the form of batteries is increased by a factor of two to three.
- the avoidance of corners and peaks avoids the previously observed shadow formation in the flocked objects. Since there are no discharges at the tips and edges, the formation of harmful ozone is largely prevented.
- the high-voltage electrode designed as an ellipsoid of revolution is preferably arranged in the immediate vicinity of an outlet opening for liquids.
- the liquid comes from a storage container Pressure of the outlet opening is fed, for example, to a nozzle and the high-voltage electrode, which is designed as an ellipsoid of rotation, then ensures optimal charging of the liquid droplets.

Abstract
