Definitions
- the invention relates to a sail for sailing yachts that are reinforced with a textile fiber layer.
- sailing yacht cloths which are made of synthetic threads, preferably polyester threads, for the production of sails for sailing yachts. Because of the high demands placed on such sailing yachts, the fabrics must have an extremely dense counterweight setting, since this is the only way to ensure that the fabric cannot be distorted even in the diagonal direction. The manufacture of such sailing yacht cloths places high demands on weaving technology, is time-consuming and costly.
- a sail which in principle consists of a single sheet, namely a thermoplastic film, preferably reinforced by thermoplastic fibers. This material is cut into the desired sail shape, then supported at its edges and permanently deformed into a three-dimensional structure by stretching the middle part of the material by heat and / or pressure.
- thermoplastic material chosen here is one that maintains the shape obtained in the molding process. If a film material is used that is not fiber-reinforced, the above-mentioned disadvantages of film sails result in particular from their poor long-term stability.
- the use of a fiber-reinforced film material presupposes that the fiber mass is worked into the film, i.e. that the material would have to be produced specifically for these sails, which would increase the costs very much, and that because of the required minimum thickness of such a material, the weight disadvantages characteristic of reinforced foil sails would again come into play.
- a sail is known from EP-A-0 034 189 which, due to its specially structured surface, is said to have a favorable influence on the flow of the wind on the sail surface.
- This known sail is produced by coating a textile base with a film made of a thermoplastic material that is structured on the surface by calendering, although a nonwoven can be used as the textile base, but preferably fabrics made of synthetic fibers are used.
- This publication gives no indication of the manufacture of a light and stable yacht sail even under high mechanical stress.
- the sails according to the invention for sailing yachts avoid the disadvantages of known sail designs.
- the sails for sailing yachts according to the invention are characterized in that they consist of or contain a nonwoven fabric made of fibers or threads made of synthetic linear high polymers which is covered on one or both sides with a fabric or another textile fabric.
- Solidified nonwovens made of fibers or threads made of synthetic linear high polymers are to be understood as nonwovens which are formed by laying down fibers or continuous threads and subsequently in the usual way, e.g. were solidified by gluing or needling.
- Nonwovens which were produced by the so-called spunbond process are preferably used.
- the sails for sailing yachts according to the invention like those made of foils, cannot be distorted diagonally. Compared to the latter, however, they show the advantage of considerably better tear resistance.
- Sails for sailing yachts must meet the requirements placed on them in terms of strength, form stability and tear resistance, but on the other hand should be as light as possible, i.e. have a low basis weight.
- the bonded nonwovens can be connected to the textile fabrics by gluing and / or needling or sewing. This is a considerable advantage of the sails according to the invention for sailing yachts over the sails made of foil.
- the sails for sailing yachts according to the invention can of course also, depending on the design, for sailing other watercraft, e.g. can also be used by surfboards.
- the sails for sailing yachts according to the invention can have a different structure. They can be made from a consolidated fleece, connected on one side with a fabric or another textile fabric, or from a consolidated fleece, covered on both sides with a fabric or another fabric. It is also possible to cover a textile fabric on both sides with a consolidated fleece.
- a sail was made from a spunbond nonwoven fabric made of polyester filaments with a single titer of 4 dtex, which was additionally connected to a fabric made of 280 dtex polyester threads, which had 16 threads per centimeter in warp and weft. The connection was made by gluing with an acrylate binder.
- the tear strength was 125 N (measured in DIN 53 356). The strength was 1200 N.
