Abstract

A decor is applied to a tin can by printing a pattern onto a metallic surface thereof directly and hardening the pattern on the metallic surface. The can is then immersion-coated in an electroimmersion lacquering unit to provide it with a lacquer coating. The printed pattern can be an electrically conductive lacquer in order to insure the electroimmersion coating of the printed pattern as well as the exposed metal surfaces which may surround it.

Description

The invention relates to a method for producing a corrosion-protective coating on metallic substrates according to the preamble of claims 1 and 2.

Methods of the aforementioned type are known (EP-A-0 033 140), in which a lacquer layer in the form of a filler is first sprayed and hardened on part of the surface of the metallic substrates before the coating of the uncovered surface is applied by means of an electrocoating process and both layers are then cured. The filler depends on a certain composition and on an overlap of the electrocoat primer and the filler, which should have a width of 2 to 150 mm. A particular advantage in the known method is seen in the fact that the total layer thickness in the overlap zone is always greater than that of the electrodeposition primer.

The object of the invention is to develop the known method for use in the packaging industry in such a way that, in addition to corrosion protection, the decorative design of metallic surfaces is simplified and the apparatus, work technology and energy expenditure previously required for this is reduced.

The solution to the above problem results from claims 1 and 2.

It is already known to provide packaging cans with a printed decor and to provide the cans with corrosion protection on their entire surface, which is of particular importance when the cans are used for packaging food or beverages.

To apply a decor to the outer circumferential surface of can bodies and a lacquer layer covering the entire can surface, the following process steps have so far been carried out in practical implementation:

Application of a varnish that forms the base for the subsequent decor.

Trocknung und/oder Vernetzung des Grundlackes.Drying and / or crosslinking of the base coat.

Aufbringen des Dekors (Druck) auf den Grundlack der Außenfläche.Apply the decor (print) to the base coat of the outer surface.

Trocknung und/oder Vernetzung des aufgedruckten Dekors.Drying and / or cross-linking of the printed decor.

Bodenspritzlackierung zum Korrosionsschutz.Floor spray paint for corrosion protection.

Innenspritzlackierung zum Korrosionsschutz.Internal spray painting for corrosion protection.

Trocknung und/oder Vernetzung des Korrosionsschutzlackes.Drying and / or cross-linking of the anti-corrosion varnish.

If a two-layer coating is necessary, two further steps, namely a further interior spray coating and a further drying or crosslinking, must be connected.

The large number of previously necessary process steps for decorating and corrosion-preventing painting of metal can bodies requires a great deal of mechanical and apparatus expenditure and for the corrosion-preventing coating relatively large amounts of coating, since tolerances in the layer thickness cannot be avoided when applying the coating and the smallest layer thickness must still be sufficient to ensure corrosion protection. The aforementioned requirements also apply to the application of the base coat on the outer surface, provided that this is not covered again by the decorative print.

Electrodeposition painting has also already been described in connection with the application of a coating to can bodies (DE-OS-2 024 106). In this aforementioned method for coating can bodies, the application of the corrosion-preventing lacquer is provided by immersing the can bodies of three-part cans after the completion of the can bodies before the bodies are provided with a bottom and filled. The question of a decorative print is not addressed in the previous publication. If such a decorative imprint were to be provided, it would have to be applied to the corrosion-preventing lacquer layer, which would cause considerable difficulties, which are in particular a risk of damage to the corrosion-preventing lacquer layer, which cannot be avoided by the mechanical stress on the can body during the printing process.

Compared to the process for decorating and corrosion-preventing painting of metallic can bodies described above, the process according to claims 1 and 2 of the present invention dispenses with the otherwise necessary application of base coat on the outer surface of the can bodies and instead the decorative print is applied and cured as the first layer of paint, before either claiming 1 the decorative printing is supplemented or completed by the subsequent electrocoating, or before the entire can body is coated with a clearcoat according to claim 2 when using an electrically conductive coating for the decorative printing by electrocoating.

In the method according to claim 1, the lacquer applied by the electrocoating may contain pigments as an additive to complete or complete the decorative print, which pigments were also included in the base lacquer application in the conventional method. With such a pigmented dip coating, the areas remaining between the separate color fields of the decorative print are provided with a colored coating, which corresponds to the conventional base coat.

The method according to claim 1 is based on the knowledge that, contrary to the instructions in EP-A-0 033 140, no noticeable The area of overlap between the first layer of paint, and thus the decorative print, and the dip coat applied by the subsequent electro-dip coating is created, but that due to the insulation resistance of the first coat of paint a sharp delimitation of this coat of paint is achieved by the electro-dip coating, but on the other hand none without a measurable overlap between the two paint coats Areas remain which are not adequately coated with a varnish and which could form areas at risk of corrosion. Since the electrodeposition coating determines the varnish as a function of the electrical conductivity between the can body and the counterelectrode, the varnish layer applied by the electrodeposition coating can be applied in the same thickness as the varnish layer of the decorative print. The sharp demarcation of the coating application forming the decorative print from the other surfaces coated by means of the dip coating is decisive for the usability of the method according to claim 1.

The method of claim 2 is particularly useful for the manufacture of decorated cans, the outer surfaces of which are exposed to severe stress in the subsequent treatment. This is because the varnish applied to the decorative print creates a protective layer for this decorative print and at the same time achieves a corrosion-preventing coating on the surfaces not coated by the decorative print in a single operation.

The aforementioned method is particularly recommended in those cases in which the outer surface of the can body has bare surfaces in addition to the decorative print or the color fields of the decorative print which are separated from one another are separated from one another by bare surface areas. In this embodiment of the can bodies, the decorative print is applied to the bare can bodies in a manner similar to the method described above, and after this decorative print has hardened, the electrocoating is carried out with a clear varnish.

If necessary, the electrical conductivity of the varnish used for the decor printing can be adjusted so that the thickness of the varnish layer that arises on the color fields of the decor printing during electrodeposition coating is kept smaller than in the other areas.

As a result of the application of the decorative print and the subsequent electrocoating, safe and full-surface corrosion protection is achieved in all variants of the described method with a significantly smaller number of process steps compared to the known method and a simultaneous reduction in the need for coating material.
