Definitions
- the invention relates to an apparatus for applying adhesive tapes to supports whatever their material: paper, plastic, kraft paper, etc.
- adhesive tapes are used in the form of spools.

- the adhesive tape leaves the housing through a slot made on the periphery thereof.
- the end of the aforementioned branch is provided with a blade and has a small bulge allowing, on the one hand, the cutting of the ribbon and, d 'other hand, fixing the end of it after bonding.
- the adhesive side is obviously always on the side of the branch in order to be able to be fixed there by gluing on only a few millimeters.
- Such a device certainly avoids the drawback of a difficult peeling off of the end of the ribbon at the start of each operation, but it is difficult to use because it does not allow the ribbon to be applied to a support with precision and speed. Indeed, the guide of the tape is done with one hand and, therefore, the bonding is poorly done, without any precision and slowly. The result is always bad if the end of the ribbon is not applied in the right direction, which happens frequently because the ribbon deviates, then, from the desired direction and the operation has to be started again.

- the invention which overcomes these drawbacks, relates to an instrument of the type described above, remarkable in that it comprises two branches extending on either side of the slot in the housing, the first branch having a convex curvature at its end for applying the tape to its support and a blade, possibly toothed, situated beyond said curvature, the second branch serving to fix the end by gluing miter of the ribbon after each use and the distances separating said slot from the ends of each of said branches being equal; the two branches have, moreover, on their faces arranged opposite one another a concave part allowing for one to avoid friction during the unwinding and facilitating for the other the take off of the end of the tape with the adhesive side facing the latter.

- the birth of the blade is located at a distance between six to twelve millimeters from the aforementioned edge.
- These fins facilitate the pivoting of the instrument and prevent the blade from being in contact with the support during the cutting of the ribbon.
- the pivoting of the instrument causes the ribbon to rise, to tension it on the cutting blade and, consequently, to cut it off.
- strips for guiding the ribbon are provided on the first branch and extend towards the second.

- the instrument essentially consists of a housing 1 in which a coil B of adhesive tape R is enclosed.
- the ribbon R leaves the housing 1 through a slot 2 in the latter.
- the housing 1 has on either side of the slot 2 two branches 3 and 4. '
- the branch 3 has at its end a convex part 5 and comprises in front of this part a usual cutting blade 6 toothed or not and preferably metallic.
- the coil B is arranged in the housing 1 so that the adhesive face of the tape R is directed towards the branch 4 so as to be stuck there while awaiting use.
- the distances D1 and D2 respectively separating the slot 2 and the convex end 5 of the branch 3, on the one hand, and said slot and the end of the branch 4, on the other hand, are equal in order to be able to adhere the end of the ribbon cut on the end of the branch 4 in the standby position.
- the part 7 of the branch 3 located between the convex one 5 and the slot 2 is concave to limit the friction of the ribbon during its application on a support S. It is the same with regard to the part 8 of the branch 4 so that the ribbon R does not adhere that on the end of said branch which limits its bonding surface and facilitates its release prior to its application on the support S.
- This application is carried out by the convex part 5 which presses the tape against the support S and which constitutes the applicator body; simultaneously, the housing 1 is moved according to arrow F1 (FIG. 1).
- end of the branch 3 is tangent to the plane passing through the slot 2 and the axis of rotation of the coil B.
- the width of the branches 3 and 4 and of the blade 6 is at least equal to the width of the ribbon R.
- the two branches 3 and 4 advantageously constitute a guide member and can be applied against a rule during the unwinding of the tape.
- the blade 6 is carried by the branch 4.

- the branch 3 has on its face directed towards the ribbon R a ribbon retaining member constituted, for example, by two lateral tabs 13, arranged obliquely so that the distance separating the free ends of said tongues is less than the width ribbon R.
- the inclination of the tongues 13 is of the order of about thirty degrees.
- any other means can be used to perform this function, such as a bridge not shown, provided that the friction between said member and the adhesive side of the tape is reduced to a minimum.
- the housing 1 comprises a flexible blade 14, the free end of which can exert a slight pressure on the ribbon to oppose its withdrawal movement during cutting, this pressure being however insufficient to oppose the unwinding of said ribbon.
- FIG. 9 shows a detail of embodiment of the flexible blade 14 which has lugs 15 extending obliquely in the direction of unwinding of the tape so that they do not increase the tensile force during the unwinding but that they on the other hand, effectively oppose its return movement during its sectioning.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an apparatus for applying adhesive tapes to supports whatever their material: paper, plastic, kraft paper, etc.
Currently, adhesive tapes are used in the form of spools. To allow easy takeoff from the end of the ribbon at the start of each operation, a reel is used which consists of a box containing the coil and having a branch external to said box. The adhesive tape leaves the housing through a slot made on the periphery thereof. The end of the aforementioned branch is provided with a blade and has a small bulge allowing, on the one hand, the cutting of the ribbon and, d 'other hand, fixing the end of it after bonding. It should be noted that the adhesive side is obviously always on the side of the branch in order to be able to be fixed there by gluing on only a few millimeters.
Such a device certainly avoids the drawback of a difficult peeling off of the end of the ribbon at the start of each operation, but it is difficult to use because it does not allow the ribbon to be applied to a support with precision and speed.
In fact, the devices currently used are simple reels because they do not have devices ensuring the application of the end of the tape on its support.
The invention, which overcomes these drawbacks, relates to an instrument of the type described above, remarkable in that it comprises two branches extending on either side of the slot in the housing, the first branch having a convex curvature at its end for applying the tape to its support and a blade, possibly toothed, situated beyond said curvature, the second branch serving to fix the end by gluing miter of the ribbon after each use and the distances separating said slot from the ends of each of said branches being equal; the two branches have, moreover, on their faces arranged opposite one another a concave part allowing for one to avoid friction during the unwinding and facilitating for the other the take off of the end of the tape with the adhesive side facing the latter.
According to a variant, the blade is located at the end of the second branch.
According to a second embodiment, the end of the first branch has a sharp edge and two fins, with a convex curvilinear outline and between which the ribbon can pass, which extend beyond the end of the blade. preferably, the birth of the blade is located at a distance between six to twelve millimeters from the aforementioned edge.
These fins facilitate the pivoting of the instrument and prevent the blade from being in contact with the support during the cutting of the ribbon. The pivoting of the instrument causes the ribbon to rise, to tension it on the cutting blade and, consequently, to cut it off.
According to a variant, strips for guiding the ribbon are provided on the first branch and extend towards the second.
It appears from the two embodiments described above, that manual action is necessary to transfer the end of the ribbon from one branch to another.
According to a third embodiment, which overcomes in particular this drawback, the ribbon is held towards the first aforementioned branch by a guide member constituted for example by two lateral tabs made integral with said branch and arranged obliquely so that the distance separating their ends is less than the width of the ribbon, a means being possibly provided to oppose the movement of withdrawal of the ribbon during its cutting. Such means can be constituted by a very flexible blade whose free end is in contact with the adhesive side of the tape.

The
Of course, the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described and shown but extends, on the contrary, to all variants of shapes, materials and dimensions.
