<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Longitudinal cutting device for flat materials in rolls
The present invention relates to a device for cutting longitudinally a flat material in a roll, for example a tape or a film. Said device comprises means on which the ribbon or film is caused to move and a blade intended to touch said ribbon or film to cut it longitudinally.
Devices of the type described above are known. These devices have the drawback that the cutting edge of the blade vibrates and undergoes transverse movements, in particular for high running speeds for the ribbon or the film to be cut.
These vibrations and transverse movements are the cause of an incorrect cutting. In the case of ribbons carrying longitudinal series of labels with barcode, an incorrect cutting can result in the non-use of the cut ribbons because either the latter can no longer be placed in the devices for affixing labels to products, either the labels or tags are damaged.
The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks. In the device according to the invention, said means on which the tape or film is caused to move comprise a support made of a material in which a part of the cutting edge of the blade is able to penetrate, means acting on the blade or on the support for exerting a contact force of the blade on the support, the part of the cutting edge of the blade penetrating into the support forming a means suitable for

dampen vibration movements of the blade when moving the ribbon or film and a means for ensuring correct positioning of the blade relative to the support.
Advantageously, the support has a curved or rounded shape so that the thickness of the edge portion of the blade penetrating into the support varies gradually.
According to a variant, the cutting edge of the blade has a curved or rounded shape so that the thickness of the portion of the cutting edge of the blade penetrating into the support varies gradually.
According to one embodiment, the blade is carried by an arm on which a spring acts so that the edge of the blade bears on the support.
According to a particular embodiment, the device comprises several blades.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment, the support has a cylinder or is a part of a cylinder, the ends of which bear a flange for guiding the longitudinal edges of the ribbon or film. Preferably, one or more guide flanges are associated with the cylinder or part of the cylinder by means making it possible to adapt the position of the flanges between them to the width of the ribbon or film to be cut.
According to a detail of a possible embodiment, the support comprises an outer layer having mechanical properties such that the edge of the blade is able to penetrate therein and an inner layer having resistance to penetration of the edge of the blade.
According to a detail of another possible embodiment, the blade is associated with the vicinity of its part of the cutting edge penetrating into the support of a means intended to limit the penetration of the blade into said
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
support.
Special features and details of an embodiment will emerge from the following description in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings.
In these drawings, - Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device according to the invention, and - Figure 2 is a sectional view of a detail of the device of Figure 1.
The figure shows a device for longitudinally cutting a ribbon or a film, for example from paper, synthetic material, etc. The device comprises * fixed return rollers 1,2, 3 on which the ribbon or film F shown in broken lines is caused to move, and * a blade 4 intended to touch said ribbon or film to cut it longitudinally. The roller 2 serves as a support on which the blade bears. This roller is made of a material into which a part 4A of the cutting edge of the blade 4 is able to penetrate. A spring 5 acts on a tube 6 pivotally mounted P relative to a rod 7 secured to a frame 8. The tube 6 carries an arm 9 on which the blade is mounted 4. The spring 5 serves as means for applying (pivoting P of the arm 9) the blade 4 on the roller 2, that is to say to exert a contact force of the blade on the support.
The part 4A of the cutting edge of the blade penetrating into the roller 2 forms a means capable of damping vibration movements of the blade 4 during the displacement X of the ribbon or film F and to ensure correct positioning of the blade relative to the roller 2 .
Thanks to the circular shape (that is to say curved) of the roller 2, the thickness e of the part 4A of the cutting edge of the blade penetrating into the roller varies progressively, from a zero thickness to a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
maximum thickness and then from this maximum thickness to zero thickness.
It goes without saying that the cutting edge of the blade could have had a curved or rounded shape so that the thickness of the portion of the cutting edge of the blade penetrating into a substantially flat support could also have varied gradually.
It also goes without saying that the arm 9 can carry more than one blade 4 for cutting the ribbon into several longitudinal pieces, which can then be rewound.
The roller 2 is a cylinder, the ends of which bear a guide rim 20 of the longitudinal edges of the ribbon or film.
These guide flanges are associated with the cylinder by means making it possible to adapt the position of the flanges 20 between them (that is to say adapt the distance separating the flanges) to the width of the ribbon or film to be cut.
The roller 2 is for example made of polyamide, nylon, etc. It goes without saying that the roller 2 may have an outer layer having mechanical properties such that the cutting edge of the blade is able to penetrate therein and an inner layer having resistance to penetration of the cutting edge of the blade.
Optionally, to limit the penetration of the blade, the blade can be associated in the vicinity of its part of the cutting edge penetrating into the support of a means (such as a finger) intended to limit the penetration of the blade into said support.
The use of a roller allows by a simple rotation of the roller to present a surface not yet notched by the edge of a blade to the action of the edge of the blade.
