<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Improvements to inking mechanisms for printing machines *
The present invention relates to improvements to printing machines using a rotary type-holder drum, the letterpress surfaces of which are inked by a rotary ink roller, as for example in the machine written in the applicant's earlier French patent N 651783. , for "Improvements to ticket printing machines: the railways or others".
The object of the present invention is to provide in a printing machine of this kind an improved mechanism for inking the character carrier, which mechanism would allow cleaning and monitoring more easily than up to now,
In accordance with the present invention, in a machine of this kind, there is established an inking mechanism constructed as an independent assembly moving
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
along guides or the like to the proximity of the character drum or in the opposite direction,
and can be immobilized automatically in a correct position in relation to this drum * '
According to a variant of the invention, there is established in a machine: this type an inking mechanism comprising a one-piece assembly moving close to the character-carrying drum or in the opposite direction so that the movement : this block towards the drum automatically engages the inking roller with its drive system, this roller so disengaged by the reverse movement.
Finally, according to another variant of the invention, relating to the type of printing machines in which the inking roller is applied during its operation to a determined typographic surface on the drum, a device is established ensuring the engagement. automatic of the inking roller with a corresponding element of the drum, when the winding assembly is brought into position.
In one embodiment of the invention, the inking assembly comprises a housing in which are mounted: an element -containing ink, a roller dipping in the ink, a blade with a notch covering this roller and an inking or transport roller, which conveys the ink from the ink dipping roller onto the letterpress surface of the type drum.
The casing of this assembly is provided with guides sliding along rods fixed to the machine, the arrangement being such that the block can be removed from the rods in one direction,
while in the other direction it is brought close to the drum and held in this position @ by a spring-loaded pawl. =

of the inking mechanism, provided with guide holes 2, into which penetrate the guide rods 3 fixed at one of their ends to the transverse bar 4 rigidly supported by the lateral elements 5 of the frame of the printing machine. The rotating character drum is designated by 6.
A roller dipping in the ink 8, rotating on? ¯ 'axis 9 supported by the bearings in the housing 1, can turn in the element containing the ink 7 and engages with the blade 91.
The axis 9 carries a crank with a crank pin 10, which cuts the path of the arm II of the driving member 12. The latter can rotate in the bearings supported by the frame of the machine and is driven by a chain and a chain system 13, from the shaft 14 of the drum 6.
The trimming roller 15 is mounted on the shaft 16, the ends of which rotate in the notches 17 made in the housing 1; it is arranged so as to remain in normal contact with the transparent roller in the ink 8.
So that the assembly can be immobilized automatically on the guide rods 3 in the direct proximity of the drum 6, a spring-loaded pawl 18 is placed on the housing 1: this assembly and engages with a notch 19 in one of these rods. The pawl 18 comprises a finger 20, in order to facilitate the release of the pawl from the notch 19.
It can be seen that the position of the free ends of the guide rods 3 allows the assembly to be detached from the mechanism of the machine, and that, when the assembly slides on these guide rods: the crankpin 10 is placed automatically in the path of the arm 11 during its rotation, whatever the initial relative position

of parts 10 and 11.
Figures 6 and 7 show a device in which the inking roller 15 is mounted at the ends of a pivoting yoke 16; and continuously and elastically engages under the action of the spring 16 '' with all the typographic surfaces of the drum 6 during its rotation, while in '.es Figures 1 to 5 the roller 15 comes into contact with a desired surface at the same time. ' help :
the? them oscillating arms 21 pivot at 22 around a point of the frame of the. machine 5 and actuated by the mechanism of the machine.,
In order that the ends of the pin 16 can automatically engage with the arms 21, these arms are provided with notches 23 substantially parallel to the guide rods 3, the openings of these notches 23 being directed in a similar fashion. such that the axis 16 can be housed in, when the ensemnle is, put in position or else released in the opposite case.
