Abstract

A domestic floor mop comprises an absorbent band mounted on a bracket carried at the end of a handle. A rotary torsion head is engaged with the band and is rotatably mounted in the bracket. A fastener is fixed to each end of the band, and the fasteners are monted on the bracket for movement between a washing position, in which said fasteners are spaced apart and said band is deployed in a plane, and a wringing position in which said fasteners are closer together such that said band is gathered towards said rotary head to permit twisting of the band upon rotation of said rotary head. The fasteners are each slidably mounted in a respective guide carried by said bracket and extending in a plane parallel to the deployment plane of said band.

Description

The invention relates to floor mops.

More specifically, it relates to washing brushes which comprise an absorbent strip mounted on a support carried at the end of a handle, a torsion head of this strip engaged with the middle region of this strip and rotatably mounted in a bearing arranged on the support, and at least two fasteners fixed respectively to the ends of the strip and movably mounted on the support between a washing position for which they are separated and for which the strip is deployed in a plane, and a wringing position for which they are close together and for which the strip is assembled in the vicinity of the rotary head, thus authorizing the twisting of this strip by rotation of this head in its bearing.

A brush of this kind is described, for example, in British Patent No. 211,070. However, in this brush, the band fasteners are carried at the end of arms pivotally mounted on the support, which results in a relative fragility of the device.

The present invention aims in particular to overcome this drawback, while allowing simple and economical construction.

In a washing mop according to the invention, the fasteners of the strip are slidably mounted on the support respectively in two guides situated in a plane parallel to the plane of deployment of the strip.

This arrangement ensures great robustness of the device.

The characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description which follows, by way of example, with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
  • Figure 1 is a sectional view of a brush according to the invention with the absorbent strip deployed in a plane, that is to say placed in the washing position; Figure 2 is a side elevational view of this brush, with the strip in the same position; Figure 3 is a front elevational view of this brush., with the strip in a position preparatory to wringing, that is to say with the middle region of this strip engaged in the internal space of a stirrup forming part of the support integral with the handle; Figure 4 is an elevational view of the brush, illustrating the twist of the strip, with the fasteners of this strip in their close wringing position; Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the brush, similar to Figure 2, but with the handle in a pivoted position suitable for washing without fatigue; Figure 6 is a sectional view of the rotary head for twisting the strip; Figure 7 is a sectional view of a device for limiting the rotation of the rotary head; Figure 8 is an elevational view of the end of the handle, showing a longitudinal groove which is part of the rotation limiting device; Figure 9 is a sectional view of a tubular socket re which is also part of this rotation limiting device and which receives the end of the handle shown in FIG. 8; Figure 10 is a vertical section of a sleeve which is part of the bearing of the rotary head and which receives the sleeve shown in Figure 9; FIG. 11 is a bottom view of the brush, with the strip in the position illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2.

The washing brush shown in these drawings comprises an absorbent strip 10 mounted on a support 12 carried at the end of a handle 14, a torsion head 16 engaged with the central region 18 of this strip and rotatably mounted in a bearing 20 arranged on the support 12, and two fasteners 22 fixed respectively to the ends 24 of the strip and movably mounted on the support 12.

The absorbent strip 10 consists of a sponge 26 wrapped in a tubular sheath 28 which is made of a mop and the ends 24 of which are folded back on themselves then sewn together to form two loops for receiving the fasteners 22 respectively. 16, which is integral in rotation with the end 30 of the handle 14, comprises a disc 32 which is applied against the central region 18 of the strip 10 and to which this strip is fixed by means of a diametrical bar 34 which overlaps it.

The support 12 comprises a U-shaped stirrup 36, the two branches 38 of which carry two opposite wings 40 respectively, and the central portion 42 of which carries the bearing 20 of the rotary head 16, which head is thus located between the branches of the 'stirrup. The two wings 40 are formed by the two opposite regions of the same elongated plate 44 coming from molding, the central region of which has a wide opening 46 receiving the rotary head 16. The handle 14 is slidably mounted in a sleeve 48 which extends from the central part 1 1 2 of the stirrup towards the outside of this stirrup and which at the same time forms part of the bearing 20 of the rotary head 16.

According to the invention, the two fasteners 22 are slidably mounted on the support 12, respectively in two guides 50, between a washing position (FIG. 1) for which they are separated and for which the strip 10 is deployed in a plane, and a wringing position (FIG. 4) for which they are close together and for which the strip 10 is assembled in the vicinity of the rotary head 16, thus authorizing the twisting of this strip by rotation of this head in the bearing 20.

Each guide / is formed by a pair of rails 52 (FIGS. 2 and 5) situated in a plane parallel to the plane of deployment of the strip 10 and carried by the longitudinal edges of the plate 44, and each fastener 22 is formed by a rod which is threaded into one of the loops 24 and the ends 56 of which, in the form of rollers, are slidably mounted in the pair of rails 52.

Thus, it will be understood that, to achieve a twist of the strip 10, it will first be necessary to make the handle 14 slide upwards (arrow F in FIG. 1) between a washing position, for which the rotary head 16 is located in the vicinity of the strip deployment plane (FIG. 1), and a wringing position, for which the rotary head 16 is located in the vicinity of the central part 42 of the stirrup 36 and for which the median region 18 of the strip 10 is engaged in the space internal to the stirrup (FIG. 3), then to make a rotation of this handle in its bearing 20 (arrow G), which will cause, on the one hand , the rotation of the torsion head 16, and on the other hand, during this maneuver, a bringing together of the fasteners 22 towards one another, thus authorizing the twisting of the strip 10 around the axis of the handle (figure 4).

To allow the user to perform a good wash, while saving fatigue, the invention provides the possibility of tilting the handle 14 relative to the deployment plane of the strip 10, as illustrated in Figure 5. A this effect the plate 44 of the support 12, and therefore the wings 40 which form part of this plate, are pivotally mounted on the branches 38 of the U-shaped stirrup around a pivot axis parallel to the plane of deployment of the strip and defined by two pivots 58 carried by the branches 38, and the disc 32 of the rotary head is carried by a shaft 60 which is connected to the end 30 of the handle 14 via a joint 62 whose axis is also parallel to the strip deployment plane and coincides with the axis of the pivots 58 when the handle 14 is located in its washing position (Figures 1, 2 and 5). This articulation 62 comprises a lug 63 carried by the end of the shaft 60 and fitted between two lugs 64 carried by the end 30 of the handle 14, as well as a pivot 66 transverse to these lugs and defining the axis of joint.

We will now describe a safety device which ensures axial immobilization of the handle when the brush is in the pivoted position illustrated in FIG. 5. The end 30 of the handle 14 is hollow and, in the internal cavity 68 thus formed, a U-shaped piece of elastic material is arranged, one branch 70 of which is immobilized in the cavity 68 by a hook 72 penetrating into a hole 74, while the other branch 76, which is subjected to the action of a spring 77, carries a lateral locking lug 78 at the end. This lug 78 can occupy either a withdrawal position (FIG. 1) for which it is retracted inside the end 30 of the handle, or an extension position (broken lines 78 ′ in FIG. 1) for which it projects from the lateral surface of the end 30 of the handle through a slot 80 and then constitutes a cooperating stop with the bearing 20 to prevent the sliding of this handle towards its wringing position, that is to say upwards. The control of this lug 78 is carried out by a finger 82 carried by the central part 84 of the U-shaped part. This finger 82 is thus mounted mobile at the end of the end 30 of the handle and is directed transversely to the axis of articulation defined by the pivot 66. This finger 82 is actuated by a cam 86 formed on the shaft 60 of the rotary head 16. As can be seen more clearly in FIGS. 1 and 6, the cam 86 is formed by a localized projection from the edge of the lug 63 carried by the end of the shaft 60. Thus the lug 78 is brought either to its withdrawal position (solid lines in FIG. 1) when the axis of the rotary head, defined by the shaft 60 is in the extension of the axis of the handle 14, that is to say in its extended position when the rotary head is in a pivoted position (FIG. 5) relative to the handle 14, and that, consequently, its axis makes an angle with the axis of the handle 14.

It will be noted that, in order to obtain a twist of the strip 10 suitable for a good spin, it is necessary to rotate several turns of the rotary head 16 (arrow G) from the starting angular position illustrated in the figure 2 (or in FIGS. 1 and 11), and that, consequently, it is difficult for the user, during the reverse rotation of the head 16 (arrow H) in view of the unwinding of the strip after the twisting operation , to return the head 16 to said angular starting position, for example to continue a washing operation.

To automatically ensure this correct return of the head 16 in the vicinity of its starting angular position, the invention provides for incorporating into the bearing 20 a device for limiting reverse rotation, which will now be described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 7 to 11. A tubular sleeve 88, engaged in the sleeve 48, carries on its outer wall a helical thread groove coidale 90 whose length is limited by a stop 92 and which is screwed on a complementary rib of thread 94 internal to the sleeve 48. The internal wall 96 of the sleeve 88 rotatably secures this sleeve and the handle 14 and at the same time constitutes a sliding range and guide for this handle, this wall 96 carrying for this purpose a stud 98 engaged in a longitudinal groove 100 formed in the lateral surface of the end 30 of the handle. Thus, a rotation of the handle 14 causes, by cooperation of the groove 100 with the stud 98, a corresponding rotation of the sleeve 88 on the thread rib 94. This rotation is limited by the meeting of the stop 92 of the groove 90 with the rib 94 of the sleeve when this rotation is carried out in the direction of unwinding of the strip (arrow H), that is to say in the direction of screwing of the sleeve 88 in the sleeve 48.

It will be noted, however, that if, at the end of this reverse rotation movement, the rotary head 16 were brought back exactly to its starting angular position (which is illustrated in FIG. 3), we would not, in reality, ensure , a complete unwinding of the strip 10, this because of the inertia of the material constituting this strip. For this reason, it is preferable, during reverse rotation, to slightly exceed (for example an eighth of a turn, i.e. 45 °) the angular position illustrated in Figure 3, until reaching a reverse rotational limit position that has been identified in Figure 11 by the reference 34 'which is assigned to the diametrical fixing bar 34 when the head 16 is in this position of limit overshoot. Of course, before continuing the washing operation, it will be necessary to return the rotary head 16 to the position which it should normally occupy during washing, that is to say to make it turn slightly backwards according to the arrow K until the bar 34 finally reaches the position illustrated in solid lines in FIG. 11.

The invention provides for automatically ensuring this return of the rotary head 16 to the correct position. To this end, the longitudinal groove 100 has two axially spaced rectilinear parts 102 and 104, which extend respectively according to two generators angularly offset by about 45 °, and which are connected together by a helical median part with an elongated pitch 106. The lowest straight part 102 causes, when the handle 14 is in its high wringing position (FIGS. 3 and 4), the rotation of the sleeve 88 as well during twisting (FIG. 4) as during the unwinding of the band. The angular location of this lower part 102 is such that, during the unwinding of the strip, the limitation of the reverse rotation occurs for the angular position of the head 16 illustrated at 34 ′ in FIG. 11. During the rear sliding of the handle 14 towards its washing position (FIG. 1), the stud 98 of the sleeve 88, cooperating with the groove 100 as far as the upper part 10 4 thereof, will force the handle 14 to correct its position (arrow K) at an angle equal to the angular offset of 45 ° between the parts 102 and 104 of this groove, so that this handle finally reaches an angular position corresponding exactly to the starting position of the rotary head 16 (bar 34 in solid lines on Figure 11).

For the sake of clarity, we will summarize and specify below the operation of the mechanisms described above, as it occurs during the various phases of use of the brush.

Au cours de ce mouvement, la came 86 libère le doigt 82 et l'ergot 78 est amené à sa position d'extension 78'.being The broom / considered at the start in the position of FIGS. 1 and 2, the user first inclines the handle 14 to bring it to the pivoted position illustrated in FIG. 5. During this movement, the cam 86 releases finger 82 and lug 78 is brought to its extended position 78 '.

After a first passage of the broom on the floor to be washed, the user returns the handle 14 to its upright position of FIG. 1, which causes, by action of the cam 86 on the finger 82, the retraction of the lug 78. From this moment, the user can pull the handle up (arrow F) to bring it to its spin position (Figure 3). He can then immerse the broom in a bucket of water (shown diagrammatically in S), then exert on the handle 14 vertical sliding movements back and forth (arrows F ') to ensure, by a series of contractions and expansions of the strip 10 in the space internal to the stirrup 36, a good rinsing of this strip.

After which, having returned the handle to its high position in FIG. 3, the user can, by rotation of the handle 14 (arrow G), ensure a twist of the strip 10 suitable for good spinning. During this twisting movement, the fasteners 22 come closer (FIG. 4), while the bush 88, driven in rotation by the action of the lower part 102 of the groove 100 on the stud 98, is extracted from the sleeve 48 by the effect of unscrewing the groove of thread 90 on thread rib 94.

Once the spin has been completed, the user turns the handle 14 in the opposite direction (arrow H): the sleeve 88 is screwed into the sleeve 48 until the stop 92 of the groove 90 comes to meet the rib 94. The rotary head 16 then stops in the position marked at 34 'in FIG. 11; the strip 10 is completely unwound, the handle 14 still being in its high wringing position.

Then, in order to bring the strip 10 back to its deployment position in FIG. 1, the user lowers the handle 14 (direction opposite to arrow F). During this movement, the fasteners 22 move apart under the pressure exerted on them by the strip 10, while the rotary head 16 returns back an eighth of a turn (arrow K) by the effect of the cooperation of the stud 98 with the groove 100.

It then suffices to pivot the handle 14 again (FIG. 5) to place the brush in the suitable position for a new passage on the floor to be washed.

Mop according to claim 13, characterized in that the longitudinal groove (100) has two axially spaced rectilinear parts (102,104) which extend respectively according to two generators angularly offset and which are connected together by a helical middle part with an elongated pitch (106), the lowest rectilinear part (102) causing, when the handle (14) is in the wringing position, the rotation of the sleeve (88) both during torsion and during of the unwinding of the strip (10), and the angular location of this lower part (102) being such that, during said unwinding, the limitation of the reverse rotation occurs for an angular position (34 ') of the rotary head ( 16) located beyond the starting position, thus ensuring a complete unwinding despite the inertia of the material constituting the strip (10), while, during the rear sliding of the handle (14) towards its washing position, the stud (98) from the socket (88), cooperating with the groove (100), forces the handle (14) to correct its position by an angle equal to the angular offset between said straight portions (102, 104) so that this handle (14) finally reaches a angular position corresponding exactly to the starting position of the rotary head (16).
