Abstract

Along a collecting conveyor serving to take-up the folded printed sheets in a straddling fashion there is arranged a number of infeed members serving to feed the printed sheets. The infeed members have a delivery region which merges with the collecting conveyor. To increase the efficiency or output of the apparatus without increasing the conveying velocity of the collecting conveyor and to additionally spare the printed sheets from undergoing a sudden change in their direction of movement during the transition from the infeed members to the collecting conveyor, each of the infeed members contain controlled gripper units attached to an endless revolving traction element and serve to grip the fold of the printed sheets. At least the delivery region of the infeed members extends in the same direction as the conveying direction of the collecting conveyor which, in turn contains a number of receiving saddles for receiving the printed sheets, these saddles being arranged at a distance from each other and extending transversely with respect to the conveying direction.

Description

Schneid-Apparat vorgeschaltet. The invention relates to a device for collecting folded printed sheets according to the preamble of claim 1. Such a device usually forms part of a saddle stitcher or a three-knife automatic cutter and is connected upstream of the actual stapling or cutting apparatus.

In a known device of this type, the folded printed sheets to be collected are each individually pulled off from a stack, so that the fold forms the trailing edge of the removed printed sheet. This is then fed to the collecting conveyor in such a way that the fold of the printed sheet in the conveying direction of the collecting conveyor either lies on a traveling chain or on a stationary rail, in which case driven drivers move the printed sheet along the rail. The collecting conveyor of the known device thus resembles a running "clothesline" with printed sheets fed at a distance from one another.

Since the sets of the printed sheets collected in this way must not overlap due to the subsequent processing (stapling or trimming) - such as in a shingled stream leaving a rotary press - the feed speed of the collecting conveyor of the known device must be comparatively high, the output of a rotary press should only be approximate to be dealt with. However, the fact that the feed conveyors, i. the so-called “feeders” of the known devices have a feed direction that is more or less perpendicular to the feed direction of the collecting conveyor. When transferring from the feed conveyor to the collecting conveyor, the printed sheets therefore experience a sudden change in their direction of movement, which has a disastrous effect on the printing sheets, the higher the conveying speed of the feeding conveyors and the feed rate of the collecting conveyor. Therefore, in the known devices of this type, the speeds of the feed conveyor and the collecting conveyor are set to relatively modest upper limits, which are hardly sufficient to cope with the output of a rotary press.

This may also be the reason why the printed sheets are individually removed from a stack in the known device. The printed sheets must therefore first be stacked after they have left the printing press in order to then be individually pulled off from these stacks.

It is therefore a purpose of the invention to provide a device of the type mentioned in the preamble of claim 1 which largely avoids these disadvantages and which - at least with a part of its feeders and, if desired - can be connected directly to a printing press which ejects a scale formation.

For this purpose, the proposed device has the features specified in the characterizing part of patent claim 1.

Since the delivery areas of the feed conveyors run essentially in the same direction as the conveying direction of the collecting conveyor, the transfer of the printed sheets to the latter is not associated with a sudden change in the direction of movement. In addition, since the receiving saddles of the collecting conveyor are arranged transversely to its conveying direction, that is to say in the manner of ladder rungs, considerably more sets of printed sheets can be collected on a certain conveying path. In other words, this means that the collecting conveyor can have a lower conveying speed while the performance remains the same, or vice versa, and can collect a considerably larger number of sets of printed sheets at the same conveying speed.

An embodiment of the proposed device is described below with reference to the drawing.

It shows:
  • Fig. 1 is a schematic plan view of part of a collection device, and
  • FIG. 2 shows a schematic side view of the collecting device of FIG. 1

In the device 10 shown, one can see a collecting conveyor 11 and two feed conveyors 12, 13. As many feeders can be assigned to the collecting conveyor 11 conveying in the direction of the arrow 14 as corresponds to the number of printed sheets that the device has to collect. The collecting conveyor 11 essentially has two parallel, endlessly revolving chains 15, 16. At regular intervals are attached to these chains 15, 16 receiving saddles 17 which extend at right angles to the chains 15, 16 and protrude or project laterally beyond the chain 16. 2 that the receiving saddles 17 have essentially the shape of a prism with a triangular cross section, one of the tips of the triangle pointing away from the chains 15, 16.

The feeders 12 and 13 can be designed as described in CH-PS No. 592562 or in the largely identical US-PS No. 3955667, which is why they are shown only very schematically in the drawing and a detailed description should not be necessary at this point . However, it should be noted that the delivery areas 18, 19 of the feed conveyors 12, 13 run in the same direction as the conveying direction of the collecting conveyor 11, as indicated by the arrows 20.

24 an seinem Falz fest. Each of the grippers 21, 22 of the feed conveyors 12, 13 holds a folded printed sheet 23 or 24 at its fold. In this example, the printed sheets are not folded in the middle, that is, when viewed from the fold, the part of the printed sheet is longer than the other part overlapped by it. In the graphic arts industry, this is called a “pre-fold” sheet. As can be seen from FIGS. 1 and 2, the feed conveyors 12, 13 convey the printed sheets to be collected in a kind of fanned out scale formation, that is to say in a much denser sequence than if there were a distance between the individual printed sheets in the conveying direction.

Each of the delivery areas 18, 19 of the feed conveyors 12, 13 is assigned an opening device 25 or 26, shown schematically in FIG. 2, by means of which printing sheets are opened before being transferred to the collecting conveyor.

These opening devices 25, 26 each have a gripper belt 27, 28 which runs at a rotational speed which corresponds to the conveying speed of the feed conveyors 12, 13. The grippers 29, 30 of the gripper belts 27, 28 are arranged at the same distance from one another as the grippers 21 and 22 of the corresponding feed conveyors. The grippers 29, 30 serve to temporarily hold the trailing end edges of the longer parts of the folded printed sheets, while the underlying end edge of the shorter parts of the printed sheets remain free. A small conveyor belt 31, 32 adjoins the gripper belts 27, 28 and rotates at a higher speed than the conveying speed of the feeders 12, 13. As soon as the end edge of the shorter part of the printed sheets 23, 24 gets onto these conveyor belts 31, 32, this free end edge is advanced faster, with the result that the shorter part of the printed sheets is bulged downwards, and this free end edge is then on one side an approaching saddle 17 falls. This is illustrated on the left in FIG. 2 by the dashed line 33 for the receiving saddle 17 '. If the gripper 29, 30 at the end of the gripper band 27 or 28 releases the end edge of the longer part of the printing sheet 23 or 24, the corresponding receiving saddle 17 'has now moved on, so that the end edge of this longer part of the printing sheet moves to the other side of the saddle falls. Now the grippers 21 and 22 of the feeders can release the folded printed sheets, so that under the effect of their own weight they come astride the corresponding receiving saddles 17.

In order to reduce the influence of the “driving wind” on the printing sheets as much as possible, the point at which the grippers 21 and 22 of the feed conveyors 12 and 13 are opened is arranged as close as possible to the orbit of the receiving saddles 17. On the other hand, these receiving saddles 17 can also be attached to the chains in such a way that their leading and trailing surfaces - as shown - have the same angle to the chains 15, 16, but in such a way that the leading surface of the receiving saddles is steeper than the trailing surface.

As stated in the introduction, a stapler and / or a cutting device can be provided at the end of the collecting conveyor, not shown, in order to produce a multipage, stapled and cut publication from the collected printed sheets.
