Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for preventing the erosion on peripheral surfaces of a current-conducting electrode for metallurgical furnaces, which is composed of a permanent top part and an edible tip and is cooled in the top part, and a current-conducting electrode for carrying out the method.
- the consumption of graphite electrodes is made up as follows: Of the total consumption, about 50% is the erosion of the electrode tip, about 45% of the side electrode erosion and about 5% is lost due to electrode breakage.
- Electrodes are known in which the upper part does not consist of graphite but of a metal, for example a copper tube, which is cooled by a cooling medium, cf. e.g. B. DE-A-1 565 751 or EP-A-12 573.
- An edible graphite tip is attached to this upper part by means of a threaded nipple made of graphite or metal.
- the metal parts of the upper part made of metal have the disadvantage that they are subject to higher heat losses and the risk of burning when in contact with conductive parts, for. B. steel scrap.
- the permanent upper part is made of graphite or carbon and is cooled below the burn-off temperature by a cooling medium guided inside the same.
- an electrode is used in which the permanent upper part with two or more metal tubes extending in the longitudinal direction over the entire length of the upper part, for. B. of copper, is provided, in which the cooling medium circulates.
- the current-conducting electrode shown in FIG. 1 is composed of three electrode parts I, II, III, of which parts 1, II form the permanent upper part and part 111 forms the consumable tip of the electrode.
- the electrode is covered by a cover plate 1 which projects over the cross section of the electrode in order to prevent it from slipping through the electrode holder.
- a support bracket 3 is also attached to the cover plate 1.
- the electrode parts I, 11, 111 are screwed tightly by means of threaded nipples 4, 5 arranged in the center of the electrode cross section.
- the threaded nipple 4 can also be made of graphite or copper, while the threaded nipple 5, as will be shown, is expediently made of copper.
- a tongue and groove connection can be used.
- the electrode does not have to be composed of the three parts I, 11, 111 shown in FIG. 1.
- the upper part can either consist of only a single electrode part or of more than two electrode parts.
- the inventive design of the electrode is explained in more detail with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3.
- the nipple 4 is no longer completely drawn here since it remains unchanged compared to known designs.
- a number of copper tubes 6, one of which is shown in FIG. 2, extend through the electrode parts I, II of the permanent upper part.
- the copper tubes 6 are provided with an external thread at their ends the nuts 7 are screwed onto the upper end with a flange and nuts 9 are screwed onto the lower end.
- an intermediate plate 10 is arranged, through which the copper tubes 6 extend and which is held by the nuts 9.
- a recess 11 is provided at each pipe mouth, into which two conical rings 12, 13 made of soft copper are inserted and which are pressed together by the nut 9, so that a good conductive contact between the copper pipe 6 and the intermediate plate 10 is produced. Only a conical ring could also be used, but then the recess 11 would also have to be conical.
- the copper tubes 6 with their nuts 7, 9 represent tie rods with which the electrode parts I, II are firmly clamped.
- the permanent upper part is considerably reinforced by the copper pipes 6 on the one hand and by the pretensioning of the nuts 7, 9 on the other hand.
- the nipple 5 is firmly screwed onto the intermediate plate 10 by means of screws 14.
- the nipple 5 has a cylindrical portion 15 adjoining the intermediate plate 10, to which the conical thread portion 16 adjoins.
- the intermediate plate 10 and the cylindrical portion 15 of the nipple 5 are centered by the projection and recess 17 and surrounded by a graphite ring 18. So that there is a perfect contact between the end of the copper tube 6 and the nipple section 15, a sealing ring 19, for. B. made of silver.
- the intermediate plate 10 and the nipple 5 are suitably made of copper.
- the consumable tip III of the electrode is firmly screwed onto the conical nipple portion 16.
- An axial bore 20 is provided in the center of the electrode, through which gases can be fed to the arc region.
- a cooling medium for. B. water, with which the permanent upper part is cooled to such an extent that no erosion occurs on the peripheral surface. This is the case when e.g. B. in graphite electrodes the temperature is below 600 ° C.
- the tubes are, as can be seen from Fig. 3, in series, i. H. connected in series.
- six copper tubes 6 are arranged, which are designated a-b-c-d-e-f in accordance with the sequence of their flow.
- Arrow 21 shows the entry of the cooling medium into tube a.
- Channels 22 (FIG. 2) connected to the copper tubes 6 are drilled in the nipple 5 and establish the connection to the adjacent copper tubes 6.
- the coolant flows from the tube a through the nipple 5 and reaches the tube b through appropriate channels.
- the pipes are connected to one another by means of pipe elbows 23, which are provided with flanges 24, onto which nuts 7 are screwed by means of screws 25.
- the flange of nut 7 is so large that flange 24 of pipe elbows 23 is screwed on can be.
- the cooling medium flows via the pipe bend bc into the pipe c, then via channels cd in the nipple 5 into the pipe d, from there via the pipe bend de into the pipe e, and from there via the channels ef into the pipe f and from there in the sequence indicated by arrow 26.
- the advantage of connecting the copper tubes 6 in series is that only one inlet and one outlet are required for the cooling medium. However, it would also be possible to connect the copper tubes 6 partly in series and partly in parallel or completely in parallel.
- the previously used electrode holder can be used, so that no structural changes are necessary. A smooth flow of electricity is ensured; as usual, this passes from the jaws of the electrode holder 2 to the graphite in the electrode part 1.
