Definitions

  • the present invention relates to supply devices for medium caliber weapons and it finds a particularly important, although not exclusive, application in the supply of mortars and guns mounted on turrets or on vehicles and supplied manually. Its field of application however extends beyond and in particular that of weapons on lookout.
  • medium caliber weapons should be interpreted as designating the weapons intermediate between those which are fed automatically by racks or bands and those which use ammunition whose weight excludes manual handling. In practice, we can consider that medium caliber weapons use ammunition whose weight varies from a few kilograms to around twenty kilograms.
  • medium-caliber weapons mounted in a turret are generally supplied manually with ammunition which is stored inside the turret in lockers of appropriate dimensions or around the tank suspended from the turret itself.
  • the ammunition locations are at a variable distance from the weapon. They must be transported by the servant over a length which varies with the storage position of the ammunition. If this constraint is often acceptable, - it presents serious disadvantages during actions which require a rate of fire as high as possible: indeed, it hardly makes it possible to reach a rate of fire of the order of ten shots per minute.
  • US patent 31 34 301 describes a supply device which comprises a barrel body mounted in a fixed casing so as to be able to rotate about an approximately horizontal axis, in which are provided several locations distributed around the axis of rotation barrel and each intended to receive ammunition, as well as means making it possible to rotate the barrel body in angular steps equal to the interval between successful locations sifs so as to make each of the locations coincide in turn with an opening in the casing and allowing the munition to be extracted by axial displacement of the latter towards the front.
  • the barrel is placed immediately behind the weapon, but offset transversely to allow the recoil of it.
  • a transversely movable cradle must be provided to bring the ammunition from the barrel to the chamber. This cradle and its drive and guide means increase the size and complexity of the device and slow down the rate of fire.
  • the device is designed so that the ammunition is always loaded via the barrel.
  • the invention aims to provide a supply device for medium caliber weapons that better meet those known in the past to the requirements of practice, in particular in that it allows the servant of the weapon to have successively several munitions in a position.
  • preparatory intermediary located near the cartridge chamber of the weapon and which is always the same, thanks to which the ergonomic conditions of the shot are improved and high rates can be achieved, while leaving a possibility of conventional manual loading .
  • the invention notably proposes a supply device characterized in that the casing is placed behind the cartridge chamber of the weapon, at a distance from the latter, in a position allowing the ammunition to be introduced into said chamber without passing through the barrel body.
  • Locking means are advantageously provided for immobilizing the barrel body in the casing except when the means intended to rotate the barrel are actuated.
  • the barrel body and the casing are provided so as to prevent the ammunition placed at the various locations from moving, except when the location of an ammunition is facing the opening of the casing.
  • This opening is itself advantageously closed by a retaining member such as an elastic return finger which the servant of the weapon must separate to be able to extract the ammunition.
  • the casing is advantageously fixed to the turret, behind the cartridge chamber of the weapon, in an offset position so as not to hinder the introduction of ammunition from, not not from the supply device, but from other ammunition storage locations in the turret.
  • Guide means are advantageously interposed between the opening of the casing and the cartridge chamber. They can be constituted by a rotary roller mounted at a location such that the rear of the munition still rests on the roller when the warhead comes into contact with the cylinder head. It is thus possible to place the supply device at a distance from the breech of the weapon which is slightly greater than the length of the ammunition without, however, the servant having to support the entire weight of the ammunition during the transfer.
  • FIG. 1 shows the supply device 10 mounted on a turret, of which only the junction line 11 is represented with an upper crown provided with observation episcopes 12.
  • the front armor of the turret is crossed by the tube of a medium caliber weapon whose breech box appears partially at 13.
  • the device 10 fixed to a partition provided at the rear of the turret, can have the constitution shown in a simplified manner in FIGS. 2 and 3. It essentially comprises a barrel having a fixed part constituted by a casing 14 provided with a flange 15 fixing on the partition and a body of barrel 16 in several assembled parts.
  • the casing 14 envelops the front part of the barrel body, except in an area where it is provided with an opening 27 for passing ammunition. At the rear, it is reduced to a box 17 whose role will appear later.
  • the barrel body 16 comprises a central shaft 18, the front end of which is provided with a sleeve 19 which rotates in a bearing 20 of the casing.
  • the rear end of the shaft 18 is provided with a ball joint 21 trapped in the housing of a stud 22 fixed in an adjustable position to the housing 17.
  • a drum 23 On the rear part of the shaft 18 is keyed a drum 23 in which ammunition receiving locations are provided.
  • the drum 23 has five housings. Each munition rests, on the one hand, on the bottom of a housing by its socket and, on the other hand, by its warhead, on a fork 24 provided on a support disc 25 secured to the front part of the tree 18.
  • the barrel shown in Figures 2 and 3 is intended to receive five ammunition at a time. However, this number is not limiting.
  • the use of the device according to the invention is of interest as soon as it is intended for at least two strokes.
  • the quantity of ammunition planned will depend on the missions envisaged and the space available to house the device.
  • the drum 23 can have a very variable shape and, in particular, the bowls 26 can be formed by circular recesses, by the free space between braces or by any other arrangement ensuring correct retention.
  • the means for rotating the barrel body 16 are constituted, in the illustrated embodiment, by a handle 28 in which slides a latching finger 29 that a return spring 30 tends to return to a retracted position. In this position, the projection of the finger 29 out of the handle 28 is such that it does not extend beyond a notch 31 provided in a jacket secured to the bearing 20. A return spring 32 then tends to bring the handle back into a position of pressing the finger 29 against one end of the notch 31. The latter has an angular development corresponding to half of the interval between two successive locations made in the barrel body.
  • the handle 28 carries a lever 33 making it possible to move the finger 29, against the return force of the spring 30, so as to engage it in one of the holes drilled for this purpose in the sleeve 19.
  • This depression has two effects on the one hand, it secures in rotation the handle 28 of the barrel body; on the other hand, it pushes a lock 34 out of the corresponding hole 35, against the action of a return spring 36.
  • the barrel body has five locations, while qu 'There are ten holes 35, so it takes two movements of the handle back and forth to move from one location to the next. This arrangement, which makes it possible to adopt a lower angular clearance for the handle, is obviously not essential.
  • the device represented in FIG. 2 comprises an additional elastic return lock 37 which prevents untimely rotation of the barrel body.
  • This additional lock, carried by the housing 17, is not essential and can be omitted.
  • each of the munitions placed in the standby position is positively retained by the casing and by the barrel body.
  • additional means must be provided to prevent the ammunition 38 placed facing the outlet opening from escaping.
  • a retaining member consisting of a finger 39 slidably mounted in a projection of the housing.
  • a spring 40 tends to bring the finger 39 into a position where it rests on the warhead of the cartridge 38 and prevents it from escaping.
  • the personnel serving the weapon must first place, in the device, the five ammunition that they can receive, in addition to the ammunition stored at fixed locations in the turret. At the end of this operation, the gunman has one directly available ammunition and four waiting ammunition. If he has to carry out sorting at a limited rate, he will use the ammunition stored at a fixed post. If, on the other hand, he must fire at a rapid rate, he may successively use the five ammunition stored in the device. He can first extract the first ammunition simply by pushing the finger 39 with his thumb and then sliding the ammunition until it comes to rest on the breech box of the weapon. To have another ammunition in the same location as the first, he must grasp the handle, tighten the lever, angularly move the handle until it stops, release it, and redo a second identical movement.
  • these guide means are constituted by a roller 41 in the form of a diabolo, mounted on a chassis integral with the casing 14. This diabolo is at a distance from the cylinder head such that the warhead of the cartridge comes support on the box while the socket is still supported by the diabolo.
