Настоящее изобретение касается усовершенствованного способа получения 7-дегидрохолестерина (7-DHC), важного промежуточного продукта при биотехнологическом получении витамина D3 или его производных/метаболитов. В изобретении представлены модифицированные штаммы клеток хозяина, экспрессирующих ферменты с улучшенной активностью C-5-стеролдесатуразы, и их применение в способе получения витамина D3 или его производных и/или метаболитов.
