Description
What is claimed is: 1. A hydraulic device (10) characterized as including: an axially-extending housing (11); a hydraulic motor (12) at one end of the housing (11) having a stator (44) and a rotor (42) with cooperating teeth defining fluid pockets (46), a wobble shaft (70) connected to said rotor, said rotor (42) rotating and orbiting relative to said stator when hydraulic fluid is directed into and out of the fluid pockets (46); an axially-extending output shaft (14) extending outward from another end of the housing, the output shaft (14) having an inner end portion (89) located in the housing and connected to said wobble shaft (70) to rotate said output shaft (14) upon rotation and orbital movement of said rotor (42); a brake assembly (16) disposed in the housing including, said brake assembly including i) a plurality of annular brake disks (108) interleaved in face-to-face relation with one another, at least some of said disks (122) being fixed to the output shaft (14) for rotation therewith, and other of said brake disks (126) being fixed to the housing (11); ii) an annular piston (24) surrounding the output shaft (14) and axially moveable with respect thereto; and iii) at least one spring device (130) normally biased against one annular surface (133) of the piston to urge said piston (24) toward and against the brake disks (108) to cause said brake disks (108) to brake the output shaft (14); an annular fluid pressure cavity (136) defined by another surface (139) of the piston (24) axially-opposite from the one surface (133) to move the piston (24) away from the brake disks (108) when fluid above the force of the spring device (130) enters the cavity, said piston (124) including a radially-projecting stop surface (133) across a major portion of the one surface (133) of the piston and the housing (11) including a corresponding radially-projecting stop surface (145), the stop surface (133) of the piston engaging the stop surface (145) of the housing prior to maximum compression of the spring device (130), wherein the piston (24) is prevented from cocking when the stop surface (133) of the piston contacts the stop surface (145) of the housing. 2. The hydraulic device (10) as in claim 1, wherein the stop surface (133) of the piston contacting the stop surface (145) of the housing is at least along the inner diameter of the annular one surface (133) of the piston. 3. The hydraulic device (10) as in any of the previous claims, wherein the stop surface (133) of the piston is at least along the outer diameter of the one annular surface (133) of the piston. 4. The hydraulic device (10) as in any of the previous claims, wherein a plurality of springs (13) are provided normally under compression against the one annular surface (133) of the piston to urge said piston toward and against the brake disks (108), the springs (130) located in a series of cylindrical cavities (134) formed in the housing, with the housing stop surface (145) radially inwardly and outwardly bounding the cavities (134). 5. The hydraulic device (10) as in claim 4, wherein the cylindrical cavities (134) for the compression springs (130) open toward the other end of the housing, away from the motor end of the housing. 6. The hydraulic device (10) as in any of the previous claims, wherein the spring device (130) is provided toward the motor end of the housing, the brake disks (108) are provided toward the other end of the housing, and the piston (24) is disposed axially between the spring device (13) and the brake disks (108). 7. The hydraulic device (10) as in claim 4, wherein said housing (11) includes a) a unitary, one-piece housing cover (96) at the other end of the housing (11) having a central opening for the output shaft (14) , said housing cover (96) having a cup-shape and receiving and at least partially enclosing the brake disks (108) and the annular piston (24), and b) a unitary, one-piece housing body (54) toward the one end of the housing (11) including the plurality of cylindrical cavities (134) to receive the compression springs (130), the cup-shaped housing cover (96) and housing body (54) sealingly enclosing the brake disks (108), annular piston (24) and compression springs (130) therebetween. 8. A hydraulic device (10), characterized as including: an axially-extending housing (11); a hydraulic motor (12) at one end of the housing (11) having a stator (44) and a rotor (42) with cooperating teeth defining fluid pockets (46), a wobble shaft (70) connected to said rotor, said rotor rotating and orbiting relative to said stator when hydraulic fluid is directed into and out of the fluid pockets (46); an axially-extending output shaft (14) extending outward from another end of the housing, the output shaft (14) having an inner end portion (89) located in the housing and connected to said wobble shaft (70) to rotate said output shaft (14) upon rotation and orbital movement of said rotor (42); a brake assembly (16) disposed in the housing, said brake assembly including i) a plurality of annular brake disks (108) interleaved in face-to-face relation with one another, at least some of said disks (122) being fixed to the output shaft (14) for rotation therewith, and other of said brake disks (126) being fixed to the housing (11); ii) an annular piston (24) surrounding the output shaft (14) and axially moveable with respect thereto; and iii) at least one spring device (13) normally biased against one annular surface (133) of the piston (24) to urge said piston toward and against the brake disks (108) to cause said brake disks to brake the output shaft (14); an annular fluid pressure cavity (136) defined by another surface (139) of the piston axially-opposite from the one surface (133) to move the piston (24) away from the brake disks (108) when fluid above the force of the spring device (130) enters the cavity, the spring device (130) provided toward the one end of the housing, the brake disks (108) provided toward the other end of the housing, and the piston (24) disposed axially between the spring device and the brake disks. 9. The hydraulic device (10) as in claim 8, wherein a plurality of springs (130) are provided normally under compression against the one annular surface (133) of the piston to urge said piston toward and against the brake disks (108), the springs (130) being located in a series of cylindrical cavities (134) formed in the housing, with the housing stop surface (145) radially inwardly and outwardly bounding the cavities. 10. The hydraulic device (10) as in claims 8 or 9, wherein the cylindrical cavities (134) for the compression springs (130) open toward the other end of the housing, away from the motor end of the housing. 11. A hydraulic device (10), characterized as including: an axially-extending housing (11); a hydraulic motor (12) at one end of the housing (11), and a drive linkage (14, 70) to operate the motor, the drive linkage including an axially-extending output shaft (14) extending outward from another end of the housing, the output shaft rotating upon operation of the motor (12); a brake assembly (16) disposed in said housing, said brake assembly including i) a plurality of annular brake disks (108) interleaved in face-to-face relation with one another, at least some of said disks (122) being fixed to the output shaft (14) for rotation therewith, and other of said brake disks (126) being fixed to the housing (11); ii) an annular piston (24) surrounding the output shaft (14) and axially moveable with respect thereto; and iii) a series of compression springs (130) normally biased against one annular surface (133) of the piston (24) to urge said piston toward and against the brake disks (108) to cause said brake disks to brake the output shaft (14); an annular fluid pressure cavity (136) defined by another surface (139) of the piston (240 axially-opposite from the one surface (133) to move the piston (24) away from the brake disks (108) when fluid above the force of the springs (130) enters the cavity, an annular seal (150) surrounding the output shaft and blocking flow between the brake assembly (16) and the hydraulic motor (12); and a thrust bearing (98) disposed adjacent the inner end of the output shaft in fluid communication with the hydraulic motor, said thrust bearing (98) disposed between radially-extending and opposing bearing surfaces (98a, 98b) formed in the housing (11) and in the output shaft (14), said thrust bearing (98) at least partially axially supporting the inner end portion of said output shaft (14) for rotation relative to the housing (11).
