Description
- Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft einen thermisch stabilen Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compact-Körper.
- Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compacts sind in der Technik bekannt und bestehen im wesentlichen aus einer Masse aus Diamant-Schleifmittel-Teilchen, die in einer Menge von wenigstens 70 %, vorzugsweise von 80 bis 90 %, bezogen auf das Volumen des Compacts, eingebunden in ein hartes Konglomerat, vorliegen. Compacts sind polykristalline Massen und vermögen große Einkristalle bei vielen Anwendungen zu ersetzen. Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compacts sind auch als polykristalliner Diamant oder PCD bekannt.
- Diamant-Compacts enthalten typischerweise eine zweite Phase, die gleichmäßig über die gesamte Diamant-Masse verteilt ist. Die zweite Phase kann eine überwiegende Menge eines Katalysators/Lösungsmittels für die Diamant-Synthese wie Cobalt, Nickel oder Eisen enthalten. Diamant-Compacts mit zweiten Phasen einer solchen Beschaffenheit haben im allgemeinen keine thermische Stabilität oberhalb von 700 ºC.
- Diamant-Compacts können für sich allein oder als Verbund- Compacts verwendet werden; im letzteren Fall sind sie mit einem Sintercarbid-Substrat kaschiert. Verbund-Diamant- Compacts, bei denen die zweite Phase einen Diamant-Katalysator/ein Diamant-Lösungsmittel enthält, finden in der Industrie weit verbreitete Anwendung.
- Beispiele für Verbund-Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compacts sind in der US-PS 3 745 623 und der GB-PS 1 489 130 beschrieben.
- Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compacts des oben beschriebenen Typs sind oberhalb einer Temperatur von etwa 700 ºC empfindlich. Es gibt jedoch, in der Literatur beschrieben und auch im praktischen Einsatz, mehrere Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compacts, die oberhalb 700 ºC thermisch stabil sind. Beispielsweise beschreibt die US-PS 4 224 380 einen thermisch stabilen Diamant- Compact, der selbst-gebundene Diamant-Teilchen, die zwischen etwa 70 % und 95 % des Volumens des Produkts ausmachen, eine metallische Phase, die im wesentlichen gleichmäßig in das gesamte Produkt eingesickert ist und die zwischen etwa 0,05 % und 3 % des Volumens des Produkts ausmacht, und ein Netzwerk miteinander in Verbindung stehender, durch das gesamte Produkt hindurch verteilter und durch die Teilchen und durch die metallische Phase begrenzter leerer Poren umfaßt, wobei die Poren etwa zwischen 5 % und 30 % des Volumens des Produkts einnehmen.
- Die US-PS 4 534 773 beschreibt einen thermisch stabilen Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compact, der eine Masse von Diamant- Teilchen, die in einer Menge von 80 bis 90 Vol.-% des Körpers vorliegen, und eine zweite Phase umfaßt, die in einer Menge von 10 bis 20 Vol.-% des Körpers vorliegt, wobei die Masse der Diamant-Teilchen Diamant-zu-Diamant-Bindungen enthält, so daß eine zusammenhängende Gerüst-Masse gebildet wird, und die zweite Phase Nickel und Silicium enthält, wobei das Nickel in Form von Nickel und/oder Nickelsilicid vorliegt und das Silicium in Form von Silicium, Siliciumcarbid und/oder Nickelsilicid vorliegt.
- Die GB-PS 2 158 086 beschreibt einen thermisch stabilen Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compact ähnlich demjenigen, der in der US-PS 4 534 773 beschrieben ist, außer daß die zweite Phase im wesentlichen aus Silicium in Form von Siliciumcarbid und/oder Silicium besteht. Die EP-A-0 261 948, veröffentlicht am 30. März 1988, beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines Verbund-Diamant- Schleifmittel-Compacts, der einen an ein Sintercarbid-Substrat gebundenen thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compact umfaßt; das Verfahren umfaßt die Schritte des Bildens einer nicht-gebundenen Anordnung aus einem thermisch stabilen Compact, der eine Diamant-zu-Diamant-Bindungen enthaltende, eine zusammenhängende Gerüst-Masse bildende Masse von Diamant-Teilchen und eine durch die Diamant-Masse hindurch gleichmäßig verteilte zweite Phase umfaßt, einem Sintercarbid-Substrat und einer Schicht aus Nickel oder einer an Nickel reichen Legierung zwischen dem Compact und dem Substrat, des Hineinbringens der nicht-gebundenen Anordnung in die Reaktionszone einer Hochdruck/Hochtemperatur-Apparatur, des Einwirkenlassens einer Temperatur von wenigstens 1000 ºC und gleichzeitig eines Drucks von wenigstens 3 GPa (30 kbar) auf die nicht-gebundene Anordnung für die Dauer einer Zeitspanne, die ausreicht, um das Verbinden des Compacts mit dem Substrat zu bewirken, und des Entfernens des Verbund-Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compacts aus der Reaktionszone.
- Die US-PS 4 380 471 beschreibt ein Verfahren zum gleichzeitigen Zusammensintern von Diamant-Teilchen und Befestigen der gesinterten Diamant-Teilchen an ein Substrat, umfassend die Schritte des
- (a) Anordnens einer Masse eines Silicium enthaltenden Metalls, einer Menge Diamant-Pulver, eines Sintercarbidkörpers und einer Schicht aus einem Sperrschicht-Metall, das aus der aus Tantal, Vanadium, Molybdän, Zirconium, Wolfram und deren Legierungen bestehenden Gruppe ausgewählt ist, innerhalb eines Behälters aus einem hochschmelzenden Metall, wobei die Schicht aus dem Sperrschicht-Metall zwischen dem Sintercarbid und wenigstens einem Teil der Menge des Diamant-Pulvers angeordnet ist und die Menge des Diamant-Pulvers zwischen dem Silicium- Atome enthaltenden Metall und dem Sintercarbid-Körper angeordnet ist, wodurch eine Baugruppe gebildet wird, und
- (b) gleichzeitigen Einwirkenlassens von Hitze und Druck auf die Baugruppe, um das Silicium-Atome enthaltende Metall zu schmelzen und das geschmolzene Metall in das Diamant- Pulver in der Nachbarschaft der Schicht des Sperrschicht- Metalls einsickern zu lassen und mit dieser Schicht des Sperrschicht-Metalls Kontakt herzustellen.
- Hier ist anzumerken, daß dieses Verfahren das Einwirkenlassen von Hitze und Druck auf die Baugruppe in einer Stufe beinhaltet.
- Ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compacts mit einer metallischen Schicht, die an eine seiner Oberflächen gebunden ist, wobei der thermisch stabile Diamant-Compact eine Masse aus Diamant-Teilchen, die Diamant- zu-Diamant-Bindungen enthält und damit eine zusammenhängende Gerüst-Masse bildet, und eine zweite Phase, die gleichmäßig durch die Diamant-Masse hindurch verteilt ist, umfaßt und das Metall der metallischen Schicht aus der aus Molybdän, Tantal, Titan und einem gleichartigen, hochschmelzenden, feuerfesten Metall, Nickel und einer eine überwiegende Menge irgendeines dieser Metalle enthaltenden Legierung ausgewählt ist, umfaßt die Schritte, wie sie im nachfolgenden Anspruch 1 aufgeführt sind.
- Figur 1 zeigt eine schematische Darstellung einer Anordnung, die bei der Durchführung des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens brauchbar ist.
- Figur 2 zeigt eine perspektivische Ansicht eines Verbund- Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compacts, der mittels des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens hergestellt ist; und
- Figur 3 zeigt eine perspektivische Ansicht eines hartlötbaren Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compacts, der mittels des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens hergestellt ist.
- Die Temperatur wird in der Weise gesteuert, daß sie zuerst auf einen Wert erhöht wird, bei dem die Komponente oder die Komponenten für die zweite Phase geschmolzen wird(werden), um das Einsickern derselben in die Diamant-Masse und die Erzeugung des Compacts zu ermöglichen, bei dem die metallische Schicht jedoch nicht geschmolzen wird, und daß sie danach auf einen Wert erhöht wird, bei dem die metallische Schicht an den auf diese Weise gebildeten Compact gebunden wird. Es wurde gefunden, daß auf diese Weise die Komponente oder die Komponenten für die zweite Phase in die Diamant-Masse einsickern und den thermisch beständigen Diamant-Compact bilden können, bevor irgendein Einsickern des Metalls in die Diamant-Masse erfolgt. Ein minimales Einsickern des Metalls in die Diamant-Masse findet statt. Es wurde gefunden, daß sich ein Einsickern von weniger als 100 µm (Mikron), im allgemeinen von weniger als 50 µm (Mikron), in die Diamant-Masse erreichen läßt. Typischerweise liegt die Temperatur in der ersten Stufe im Bereich von 1100 ºC bis 1350 ºC, und die Temperatur in der zweiten ist höher als diejenige der ersten Stufe. Die Temperatur in der zweiten Stufe liegt im allgemeinen im Bereich von 1300 ºC bis 1900 ºC. In jeder Stufe wird die erhöhte Temperatur über einen Zeitraum aufrechterhalten, der im allgemeinen 10 min nicht überschreitet.
- Der hohe Druck, der angelegt wird, liegt typischerweise im Bereich von 2,7 GPa (27 kbar) bis 7 GPa (70 kbar).
- Die Baugruppe wird den Bedingungen hoher Temperatur und hohen Drucks in der Reaktionszone einer konventionellen Hochtemperatur/Hochdruck-Apparatur ausgesetzt. Die Baugruppe verbleibt in der Reaktionszone, bis das gebundene Produkt erzeugt worden ist.
- Der thermisch stabile Diamant-Compact muß eine zweite Phase haben, die gleichmäßig durch die gebundene Diamant-Masse hindurch verteilt ist. Diese zweite Phase liegt typischerweise in einer Menge vor, die 20 Vol.-% nicht überschreitet. Der Compact ist in dem Sinn thermisch stabil, daß er eine Temperatur von 1200 ºC im Vakuum, in einer inerten oder in einer nicht-oxidierenden Atmosphäre auszuhalten vermag, ohne daß irgendeine nennenswerte Graphitisierung des Diamants stattfindet. Beispiele für geeignete zweite Phasen sind Silicium und Silicium/Nickel. In diesen beiden zweiten Phasen liegt das Metall in elementarer oder kombinierter Form vor. Beispiele besonders geeigneter thermisch stabiler Diamant-Compacts sind diejenigen, die in der US-PS 4 534 773 und der GB-PS 2 158 086 beschrieben sind.
- Die Erfindung macht in einer Form ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compacts verfügbar, der eine metallische Schicht aufweist, die an eine seiner Oberflächen gebunden ist. Die metallische Schicht macht jenen Compact ohne weiteres hartlötbar an die Metall-Matrix eines Werkzeugs, in das er eingebaut wird. Beim Hartlöten eines solchen Compacts an ein Werkzeug treten im allgemeinen Temperaturen von 950 ºC bis 1100 ºC auf. Es wurde gefunden, daß die Bindung zwischen der metallischen Schicht und dem Compact, insbesondere dann, wenn das Metall der metallischen Schicht Molybdän oder ein anderes hochschmelzendes hochfeuerfestes Metall ist, durch eine Einwirkung derartig hoher Temperaturen nicht beeinträchtigt wird.
- In einer anderen Form kann die Erfindung dazu benutzt werden, einen thermisch stabilen Diamant-Compact zu erzeugen, der vermittels der metallischen Schicht an ein Sintercarbid-Substrat gebunden ist. In dieser Form umfaßt die Baugruppe, die den Bedingungen hoher Temperatur und hohen Drucks ausgesetzt wird, ein Sintercarbid-Substrat, und die metallische Schicht wird auf eine Oberfläche des Substrats aufgebracht und befindet sich in Kontakt mit dieser Oberfläche des Substrats. Das Verfahren erzeugt eine äußerst starke Bindung zwischen dem Compact und dem Sintercarbid-Substrat, die nicht beeinträchtigt wird, insbesondere dann nicht, wenn das Metall der metallischen Schicht Molybdän oder ein anderes hochschmelzendes hochfeuerfestes Metall ist, sofern das gebundene Produkt der Einwirkung von Temperaturen von 950 ºC bis 1100 ºC ausgesetzt wird. Das Sintercarbid kann irgendein beliebiges, in der Technik bekanntes sein, etwa Wolframsintercarbid, Tantalsintercarbid, Titansintercarbid und deren Mischungen. Das bevorzugte Sintercarbid ist Wolframsintercarbid. Das bindende Metall für das Sintercarbid ist typischerweise Nickel, Eisen oder Cobalt.
- Das Metall der metallischen Schicht kann Molybdän, Tantal, Titan oder ein gleichartiges hochschmelzendes feuerfestes Metall oder Nickel sein. Es kann auch eine Legierung sein, die einen überwiegenden oder hauptsächlichen Anteil eines dieser Metalle enthält. Die Legierung - wenn eine solche eingesetzt wird - enthält typischerweise wenigstens 80 Gew.-% eines der spezifizierten Metalle. Ein Beispiel für eine geeignete Legierung ist eine Nickel/Chrom-Legierung, die wenigstens 80 Gew.-% Nickel und bis zu 20 Gew.-% Chrom enthält.
- Die metallische Schicht ist vorzugsweise eine Molybdän- Schicht. Eine solche Schicht verbindet, wie gefunden wurde, besonders gut mit dem Compact und beeinträchtigt die thermische Stabilität des Produkts selbst dann nicht, wenn das Produkt, d.h. der Compact, an den die Molybdän-Schicht gebunden ist, Temperaturen einer Größenordnung von 1100 ºC ausgesetzt wird. Dies trifft gleichermaßen auf ein Produkt zu, bei dem der Compact vermittels der Molybdän-Schicht an ein Sintercarbid-Substrat gebunden ist.
- Ausführungsformen der Erfindung werden nunmehr unter Bezugnahme auf die beigefügten Zeichnungen beschrieben. Unter Hinweis auf Figur 1 wird ein Sintercarbid-Substrat 10 bereitgestellt. Auf die obere ebene Oberfläche 12 des Substrats ist eine dünne Molybdän-Schicht 14 aufgebracht. Auf der Oberseite der Schicht 14 ist eine Schicht 16 feiner Diamant-Teilchen plaziert. Auf der Oberseite der Diamant-Teilchen ist eine Schicht 18 aus Silicium-Pulver plaziert. Die nicht-gebundene Baugruppe wird in einen Tantal-Behälter 20 gestellt.
- Der beladene Tantal-Behälter 20 wird in die Reaktionszone einer konventionellen Hochtemperatur/Hochdruck-Apparatur gebracht. Der Druck der Reaktionszone wird auf 5,56 GPa (55 kbar) erhöht, und die Temperatur wird auf etwa 1350 ºC erhöht und etwa eine Zeitspanne von 5 min auf dieser Temperatur gehalten. Diese Temperatur bewirkt, daß das Silicium schmilzt und in die Diamant-Masse einsickert, wodurch ein Compact erzeugt wird, in dem die Diamant-Masse Diamant-zu- Diamant-Bindungen und eine zweite Silicium-Phase, in Form von Silicium und/oder Siliciumcarbid, enthält, die gleichmäßig durch die gebundene Diamant-Masse hindurch verteilt ist. Danach, und ohne den Behälter aus der Reaktionszone herauszunehmen, wird die Temperatur auf etwa 1600 ºc bis 1800 ºC gesteigert und etwa 5 min auf dieser Temperatur gehalten, um zu bewirken, daß das Molydän den Compact und das Substrat verbindet. Der resultierende gebundene Verbund-Schleifmittel-Compact kann aus der Reaktionszone in üblicher Weise isoliert werden. Dieser gebundene Verbund-Schleifmittel- Compact ist in der Figur 2 anschaulich dargestellt und besteht aus einem Diamant-Compact 22, der an das Sintercarbid-Substrat 10 durch die Molybdän-Schicht 14 gebunden ist.
- Es wurde gefunden, daß bei Anwendung dieser Verfahrensweise eine ausgezeichnete Bindung zwischen dem Diamant-Compact und dem Substrat erzielt wurde und daß diese Bindung selbst dann nicht beeinträchtigt wird, wenn sie 20 Minuten lang einer Temperatur von 1100 ºC ausgesetzt wurde. In einem Abdrück-Test wurde gefunden, daß die Festigkeit der Bindung größer als 480 MPa ist. Darüber hinaus zeigte der Diamant-Compact auch ein gutes Leistungsverhalten bei Dreh-Tests.
- Ein hartlötbarer, thermisch stabiler Compact 24 mit einer an eine Oberfläche 26 desselben gebundenen Molybdän-Schicht 26 (siehe Figur 3) wurde hergestellt unter Einsatz der gleichen nicht-gebundenen Baugruppe, jedoch mit der Abweichung, daß eine Schicht eines geeigneten Materials, das das Binden zwischen dem Molybdän und dem Sintercarbid-Substrat verhindert, zwischen der oberen Oberfläche 12 des Carbid- Substrats und der Molybdän-Schicht 14 angeordnet wurde. Ein Beispiel für ein geeignetes Material, das das Binden zwischen dem Molybdän und dem Sintercarbid-Substrat verhindert, ist hexagonales Bornitrid. Unter Anwendung dieses gleichen Verfahrens, jedoch unter Ersatz des Molybdäns durch Titan und Tantal, wurden hartlötbare, thermisch stabile Diamant-Compacts mit Titan- und Tantal-Schichten, die an deren eine Oberfläche gebunden waren, hergestellt. In allen drei Fällen lag eine starke Bindung zwischen der metallischen Schicht und dem Compact vor, wobei nur ein minimales Einsickern des Metalls der metallischen Schicht in den Compact stattfand.
- In einer weiteren Ausführungsform der Erfindung wurde ein thermisch stabiler Diamant-Compact mit einer an eine Oberfläche desselben gebundenen Molybdän-Schicht durch Einwirkenlassen eines Drucks von 4,86 GPa (48 kbar) und einer Temperatur von 1100 ºC in der ersten Stufe und einer Temperatur von 1250 ºC bis 1300 ºC in der zweiten Stufe hergestellt. In beiden Stufen wurde die betreffende Temperatur jeweils während einer Zeitspanne von 5 min aufrechterhalten. Die zweite Phase des Compacts war Silicium in Form von Silicium und/oder Siliciumcarbid
Claims (7)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung eines thermisch stabilen
Diamant-Compacts (24) mit einer metallischen Schicht
(14), die an eine seiner Oberflächen (26) gebunden ist,
wobei der thermisch stabile Diamant-Compact (24) eine
Masse aus Diamant-Teilchen, die
Diamant-zu-Diamant-Bindungen enthält, und eine zweite Phase, die gleichmäßig
durch die Diamant-Masse hindurch verteilt ist, umfaßt und
das Metall der metallischen Schicht (14) aus der aus
Molybdän, Tantal, Titan und einem gleichartigen,
hochschmelzenden, feuerfesten Metall, Nickel und einer eine
überwiegende Menge irgendeines dieser Metalle
enthaltenden Legierung ausgewählt ist,
umfassend die Schritte
(i) des Herstellens einer Baugruppe aus einer
metallischen Schicht (14), einer Masse aus Diamant-Teilchen
(16) auf der metallischen Schicht (14) und einer
Schicht (18) der Komponente(n), die notwendig
ist(sind), um die zweite Phase auf den Diamant-
Teilchen zu bilden, wobei diese Komponente oder
diese Komponenten einen Schmelzpunkt hat(haben), der
niedriger als derjenige der metallischen Schicht
ist; und
(ii) des Einwirkenlassens von Bedingungen hoher
Temperatur und hohen Drucks in einer Reaktionszone auf die
Baugruppe während eines Zeitraums, der ausreicht, um
den Diamant-Schleifmittel-Compact zu erzeugen, wobei
die Temperatur so gesteuert wird, daß nur ein
minimales Einsickern der metallischen Schicht (14)
in die Diamant-Masse (16) stattfindet;
wobei in Schritt (ii) die Temperatur zuerst auf
einen Wert erhöht wird, bei dem die Komponente oder
die Komponenten für die zweite Phase geschmolzen
wird(werden), um das Einsickern derselben in die
Diamant-Masse (16) und die Erzeugung des Compacts zu
ermöglichen, bei dem die metallische Schicht (14)
jedoch nicht geschmolzen wird, und die Temperatur
danach auf einen Wert erhöht wird, bei dem die
metallische Schicht (14) an den auf diese Weise
gebildeten Compact (24) gebunden wird, wobei die
Baugruppe in der Reaktionszone verbleibt, bis das
gebundene Produkt erzeugt worden ist.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, worin die Temperatur in der
ersten Stufe im Bereich von 1100 ºC bis 1350 ºC liegt und
die Temperatur in der zweiten Stufe höher ist als
diejenige der ersten Stufe.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, worin die Temperatur in der
zweiten Stufe im Bereich von 1300 ºC bis 1900 ºC liegt.
4. Verfahren nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche,
worin das Metall der metallischen Schicht (14) Molybdän
ist.
5. Verfahren nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche,
worin der hohe Druck, der angelegt wird, im Bereich von
2,7 GPa (27 kbar) bis 7 GPa (70 kbar) liegt.
6. Verfahren nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche,
worin die Baugruppe ein Sintercarbid-Substrat (10)
einschließt und die metallische Schicht (14) auf eine
Oberfläche des Substrats (10) aufgebracht wird und sich in
Kontakt mit dieser Oberfläche des Substrats (10)
befindet.
7. Verfahren nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche,
worin die Komponente für die zweite Phase Silicium ist.
