To remove the poisonous carbon monoxide and to make the exhaust gases odorless of internal combustion engines (carburetors and diesel engines) have been proposed with granular adsorbent or S filters catalytically active filter media are filled. How such filters work is good in itself. The use of both types of filters, however, has hitherto been impossible made that they exist through the solid and liquid, in the form of mist and dust Components of the exhaust gases (soot and unburned, finely atomized oil) became dirty and clogged in a fairly short time. Try to get rid of these clogs To prevent it through suitable filters, so far failed because the devised Devices, such as -. Baffles, baffles, filters made of sand, coke, metal turnings, Sieves or the like. Either did not work sufficiently or also after a short time clogged. The monitoring, cleaning and replacement of these filters mentioned caused considerable difficulties. Attempts continued to escape unburned Precipitation of oil mist by cooling, however, was extensive here Apparatus that can hardly be used in the places in question.
It has now been found that the goal is achieved if one prefilters made of porous material, such as B. cloth, asbestos fabric, porous filter stone, used and the filter surface dismantled into individual chambers like a filter press. The large surface area reduces the flow density so that the Soot soaked with oil is not pulled into the pores of the filter material, but rather itself is deposited in a very loose form on the surface, so that it is only one of the gases offers extremely low resistance. He can after a certain working time of the filter or be gently scraped off continuously. The exhaust gases to be cleaned flow through the filter walls from the outside inwards into these chambers. The soot separates accordingly on the outer surfaces of the chambers, and the purified gases flow out of the Inside the chambers in a collecting pipe, which leads them to the filter, in which « the unwanted gas components of the exhaust are filtered off. You can use the filter equipped with scrapers which, driven by the engine, continuously remove the soot. The operation of the filter is limited in this case to the fact that one under the filter chamber walls provided collecting vessel for soot from time to time Open a flap deflated.
In dem Filtergehäuse α sind die Filterkammern c The drawing shows an embodiment of the invention. On the filter housing a , the pipe b is provided, which introduces the exhaust gases into the filter housing. The filter chambers c are in the filter housing α
angeordnet. The exhaust gases flow in the direction indicated by the arrows. As can be seen from the drawing, the exhaust gases pass from the outside through the porous walls of the filter chambers c and collect in the central pipe d connected to the chambers, from where they are fed to the gas filter. In the filter housing, namely around the filter chambers, a cage-like frame e is attached, which can be set in rotary motion by means of the shaft g and the drive wheel h, for example by the motor. Spiral wire springs f are tensioned within the frame e , of which only three are shown in the drawing for the sake of clarity, which grind against the porous filter walls on the surface of which the soot sits when the frame e is rotated and thus continuously remove the soot. The latter falls down and collects in the soot collector i attached to the bottom of the filter vessel 0, from where it can be removed by opening a slide or a flap k .
