Process for the preparation of vanillin In the patent 505 404 it was shown that two isomeric alkoxymethyl ethers of propenyl catechol are obtained in the splitting of safrole or i-safrole with alcoholic alkali or with alkali alcoholate, which according to the process described in the main patent in vanillin and i -Vanillin can be transferred. You can now convert all of the safrole into vanillin if the cleavage product leading to i-vanillin, namely 3-alkoxymethyl-i-propenyl-3, 4-pyrocatechol, which can be deposited according to the method of patent 507 796 or 548 282, can be converted , e.g. B. converted into the benzyl ether by treating the sodium salt using benzyl chloride. If this is heated with dilute acids, cf. B. Patent 5o9 1 5 2, and leads the in this way obtainable 4-benzyl ether of i-propenyl-3, 4-pyrocatechol in the usual way in the 4-benzyl-3-methyl ether, so obtained in the oxidation, for . B. with ozone, the corresponding aldehyde, which supplies vanillin when heated with acids. The oxidation can also immediately follow the benzylation and the 4-benzyl-3-methylprotocatechualdehyde which is formed from the 4-benzylprotocatechualdehyde, which on treatment. with acids that provide vanillin, but the former is preferable. It is quite inexpedient to subject the product resulting from the splitting of the i-safrole to the process, because mixtures of isomers are then formed, whereas pure vanillin can only be obtained by the present process.

etwa 45 g.Example i 52 g of the sodium salt of methoxy eugenol, which is obtained according to the example of patent 548282 , are dissolved in 100 cc of alcohol, 25 g of benzyl chloride are added and the mixture is refluxed for 2 hours. Then the alcohol is distilled off. The remaining oil, which is permeated by the table salt, is poured into cold water while stirring. The benzyl ether separates out in crystalline form; it is filtered off with suction and recrystallized from alcohol. Little needles of F. 53 °. Yield about 45 g.

Then some of the alcohol is distilled off until the solution begins to turn cloudy. The saponification product crystallizes out on cooling; it is filtered off with suction and, if necessary, recrystallized from alcohol. F. 7 1 to 7 3 °. Almost quantitative yield. 27 g of the benzyl ether are dissolved in 30 cc of 1-methyl alcohol, 16 g of dimethyl sulfate are added and 55 cc of 10% sodium hydroxide solution are added dropwise with stirring. Then the alcohol is distilled off and the oil is poured into plenty of water. It gradually hardens and is recrystallized from alcohol. F. 58 °.
