EMI1.1

It has been found that the water-insoluble basic bismuth salt of guaiacol-o-carboxylic acid of the formula
EMI1.2
In an oily or similar suspension, it is ideal for the treatment of syphilitic diseases. The property of guaiacol-o-carboxylic acid to have an anesthetic effect also comes into play when this salt is used and is suitable for preventing the pain sensation that often occurs when bismuth compounds are injected. This property makes the new connection superior to similar products that are already known. The new product can be prepared by the methods customary for the preparation of basic bismuth salts of carboxylic acids. Its bismuth content is 53-54%.
Example 1: 200 parts by weight (mol. Wt. 483-5) of powdered bismuth nitrate are dissolved in 150 to 200 parts by weight of 30% acetic acid, filtered and made alkaline with sodium hydroxide solution, then repeatedly decanted with water until neutral. The hydroxide is slurried with a little hot water and added, with vigorous stirring, to a boiling solution of 200 parts by weight of guaiacol-o-carboxylic acid in 20,000 parts by weight of water. The mixture is then refluxed for 7 hours while stirring vigorously. It is then filtered hot, the precipitate is washed with hot water until neutral, dried in a drying cabinet, pulverized and passed through a silk sieve.
The excess guaiacol-o-carboxylic acid crystallizes out from the filtrate. The mother liquor is evaporated. The recovered acid can be reused in a new batch.
Example 2: 10 parts by weight of powdered bismuth nitrate are dissolved in 10 parts by volume of 30% strength acetic acid and added cold, with vigorous stirring, to a solution of 24 parts by weight of sodium guaiacol carbonate in 240 parts by volume of water. After some stirring, it is filtered off with suction, washed with cold water and then with hot alcohol until there is no longer any acidic reaction. The remaining bismuth salt is dried.
