Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
COONa. CHO. BiO. CHO. BiO. COO. BiO + 2H2O.

Process for the preparation of sodium tribismutyl tartrate.
In contrast to the complex potassium bismuth tartrates, sodium salts are the bismuth wine. acid has not yet been obtained in the pure state and in solid form ("Zeitschrift für inorganic Chemie", 48, [1906], p. 212, penultimate paragraph; "Archiv derPharmazie", 246, [1908], p. 501, last paragraph).
As has now been found, sodium tribismutyl tartrate can easily be obtained if pure bismuth hydroxide is brought into action in excess of disodium tartrate. The complex compound obtainable in this way is distinguished by its extremely easy solubility and by a high bismuth content (71-14%), properties which make it particularly suitable for use in therapy, especially for injection purposes.
Example: A molar solution of disodium tartrate is heated on a water bath for two hours with excess, pure bismuth hydroxide. A suitable bismuth hydroxide can be, for. B. win according to the rule Von Vanino and Zumbusch ("Archiv der Pharmazie", 248, [1910], p. 665).
During treatment on a water bath, 2 molecules of bismuth hydroxide dissolve for every 5 molecules of disodium tartrate. After the reaction mixture has cooled, the same volume of 50% alcohol is added. A very finely crystalline precipitate separates out, which is filtered off on the suction filter and washed several times with 50% alcohol. In this way, simultaneous precipitation of sodium tartrate is avoided. After drying, the new product forms a white, coherent, microcrystalline mass that is easily soluble in water with an alkaline reaction. It is insoluble in organic solvents. The composition corresponds to the formula
COONa. CHO. BiO. CHO. BiO. COO. BiO + 2H2O.
